webservices Posted September 21, 2004 Author Posted September 21, 2004 in french it says :Fichier du noyau absent sur le disque.Inséréer une disquette systèmeRedémarrer le système.in english should be :Kernel missing on the disk.Insert a system floppy disk.Restart your system.
Minus Human Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 say what ? Phew you seem to have a problem. well i can't really think of alot of options to tell you the truth. If youre after your data that can be saved just get a copy of ghost, ghost the drive onto another. format your pc and restore the information from the drive you ghosted. Why on earth are you still using NT 4?

All i woudl like to now if it si possible to make it boot again and if yes how, and then how to try to fix it.Please god help me ..... all my personnal dev are there.PS : please need a good advice .....

jaclaz Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 For the record, NT4, Win2k, XP and Server 2003 boot in the same way.You look like you lost (how?) your bootrecord. The problem in resolving the problem, pardon the pun, might be easy or very hard to resolve, depending on HOW your hard drive is formatted.Should your 1st Primary and Active partition be FAT16, it is easy, should it be NTFS, it could be a big problem, unless you own a copy of NTFS DOS from Winternals. To help you I need this Info:1) How many drives do you have on that PC?2) How are they partitioned, primary, logical, active, FAT16, NTFS, etc.?3) Would you eventually be able to get a supplementary hard disk?4) Do you have a BOOTABLE NT4 CD?5) Did you EVER installed Win2k on that machine?I know it looks like more question time than a helpful post, but with the above info I can point you in the right direction.jaclaz
Jose Sigafus Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 It's been awhile since I've run NT, but have had your problem before. There are a few ways to repair.Using an ERD: If your system files become damaged or your computer won't start, the ERD should fix the problem. If your Winnt directory is FAT, you can boot to Dos and copy files from your ERD to your Winnt\System32\Config folder. If it's NTFS you'll need your original NT 4 CD and the three floppy disks to reinstall NT. Run the floppy until the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R. As the message on the screen explains, pressing R causes setup to repair a damaged Windows NT installation. Setup will check each Windows NT file on your hard disk, and replace those that are corrupt. Setup then uses the information from your ERD to restore the registry and security database. If you don't have an ERD, you will probably have to reinstall NT 4 right over the top of your old installation. This will eliminate any service packs unless you have them slipstreamed into NT.
Jose Sigafus Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 PS: If you need NTFS Dos Pro (Read/Write), I can email a fully functional version with a 30 day expiration. My email address is:dick4711@mchsi.com
webservices Posted September 21, 2004 Author Posted September 21, 2004 thx for all your replies.in my company, we don't have CD's access, cause it is a master for every workstation. Maybe i could use a standard NT4 cd edition, but they are security freak, no cd drive is working.Hopefull i have a dev profiel with admin rights. I guess if i don't find a solution before tomorrow, they will take my pc away and remasterise it. They server back c:\document every night, so all my stuffs there would be back, but i care more about my scripts and docs.Since i am here, i crash 4 times already . We are on an xp migration, but not for me right now cause i am dev.By the way, we are on NTFS partition. I have only one disk with 2 partitions, a C:\ and a P:\.I wish there could be a floppy fix solution. eheh.I will give a try anyway, cause so far, i can't lose more than i have had already weeb,
fdv Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 sorry if these have been suggested already!!1. install another copy of windows nt. boot into the second install and recover your data.2. this issue is sometimes caused by root files migrating too far away from the initial bytes of the drive. if you have a defrag program that can specifically place the system files first, the problem might be resolved. one i know of is included in norton utilities, it lets you specify files to put at the beginning of the drive.3. just so you know, upgrading to windows 2000, 2003, or xp will change the version of NTFS from 4 to 5 and you will have to reformat the drive* after you recover the data if you want to continue to use NT 4. (*with nt 4 boot disks, for example. the key is that although nt can read and write to ntfs version 5, only SP6a gives nt 4 this ability, and since you can't slipstream SP6a, you'll need to install on ntfs version 4). okay, so you can create a version of nt 4 with SOME SP6a files manually replaced, but it might take a while to determine how many you can get away with replacing...
