I don't see anything wrong with smilies.

After I type something and then put a smilie on the end, it erases everything I wrote.

Are you using a pop-up blocker?

yes, it's built into my browser (MyIE) - but it's ok at other sites.

You would have to allow pop-ups for the msfn.org domain if that's possible with your pop-up program.
