How can I install WinXP SP2 without archiving? $$

Recommended Posts

I tried to extract the SP2 file and used ../I386/Update/Update.exe /n

the good side was that it didn't backup the files into the C:\Windows\$UnInstallServicePack$ folder like it normaly do (save me around 500 MB of space)

however it didn't remove old SP1 patches folders ($UnInstallQxxx$ or $Uninstall KBxxxx$ etc.) from C:\Windows

it also added Windows XP SP2 to the Add/Remove Programs

In SP1 you could have choosen "Do Not Archive"

however this option is not implemented in SP2

any ideas?

Thanks

RD

just delete them, because SP2 will include them.

you can use the Reg Cleaner to clean them.

yep, that's the only thing possible to have no archiving using SP2

to clear the steps using Windows XP SP2 without archiving (save around ~500 MB of disk space) do the following:

Extract the service pack by using extract program or start the installation, check where is the folder which the SP2 extract the files copy to another location the I386 folder, cancel the original installation and continue:

start with no archiving option: ../I386/Update/Update.exe /n

restart windows after you finish installing the SP2

remove all the folders that start with $NtUninstallQ and $NtUninstallKB, from c:\windows and remove the same Q's and KB's from the registry under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache

and also under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

in the above key you can also remove the uninstaller for the SP2 that shows under the Add/Remove programs

this right? :

1) remove the servicepackuninstall folder

2) remove above regkeys

the answer to your question is yes, do as you described.

I still think that the rtw (release to web) SP2 version will include no backup option.

but we will need to wait for next week, untill it will go bublic.
