lynchknot Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 Hi. I have XP home now. I just received the Pro version. Do I install over the home version? or boot with new CD
Drewdatrip Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 I don't want to lose everything. You dont have to...either back up 2 cd, another hardDrive or make a new partition..-Drew
LS_Dragons Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 According to this:http://support.microsoft.com/search/previe...b;en-us;Q292607You are able to 'upgrade' from Home to Pro. You should be able to boot the Pro CD and follow the upgrade instructions.Good LuckLS_Dragons
Conan Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 Microsoft will tell you it is okay to upgrade from any of their older Operating Systems. They just won't say how much headaches you will have after "upgrading".
LS_Dragons Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 Agree Conan - BUT, as you are well aware, Home is a basic subset of Pro. If you cannot do an easy upgrade in that situation - then ................... LS
dlhartmann Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 I agree Conan , however, I would say give it a shot. The worst that could happen is you have a lot of headaches and follow our wisdom after you see what transitioning is like. No matter what you should make a backup. Upgrades are not always a smooth transition and you could make a huge mistake and loose everything anyway. As suggested earlier, partitioning is great. Use Partition Magic and partition your HDD if it isn't already. This is a quick easy that option. Be aware that you could corrupt the disk on a fresh install if you install improperly and you could loose your partitions. Nothing is better then a hard copy backup on CD or Tape. Microsoft has posted a huge amount of stuff on the web for saving user settings for their products, and other manufactures do as well. So look there to see what you need to backup.I hope this helps.
lynchknot Posted July 13, 2002 Author Posted July 13, 2002 Well, I did a "clean" install...........and I have headaches! ...probably not as big of a headache because it's running smoothly. I do have multiple docs and sets of the same users. I don't know how i'm going to sort that out.
