One of my friends reinstalled xp and del her partition and installed on a new one. She just discoverd that a file she needs didnt get backed up, everything else did. Is there a way to scan her drive and recover that file if it hasn't already been overwritten? I know it's recoverable as long as it hasn't been overwritten. I am asking if anyone has some good tips (besides backing up) or software to use. I've tried Active Partition Recovery, Acronis, and a couple others...Any other ideas?

Thanks!

And for recovery from Floppies;

Just remember that you should try to avoid overwritting at all costs - booting from PE is the safest option as it leaves the system totally passive.

I use an app by the name of File scavenger. Its a great little app..but its not free.

It can obtain data from nearly any type of situation...Ie format, no partiton or defunct volume.

Get tool if ur a tech

My vote goes for Active File Recovery. I'd tried Active's Partition Recovery trial, but found it disappointing (it wouldn't let you restore the partition. I then "acquired" a copy of File Recovery (the Pro version, actually) and it recovered all of my files on my deleted partition. I now plan on buying the software soon, as it really is worth it (only $30 for the Home version and $50 for the Pro).

I should mention that there is a free partition recovery program called testdisk, but I had little success with it (besides, it seems that what you need is an individual file, not the entire partition). Good luck recovering that file.

One that I missed - it's quite old now, but very powerful - is "Lost & Found". I forget the company.

But I've seen it recover files from 2 FDisks previously.

Also - depends how desperate - the Encase Forensic Suite. NOTHING is missed by this one.
