Enable quicklaunch

Recommended Posts

This seems to be rather difficult to get working as I understand it. Do anyone know an easy way to enable the Quicklaunch for new users? Maybe a small app or something? I saw a post in here somewhere but it looked rather complicated for just this small feature.

That was realy nice of you indeed..thx

however, If i execute the reg manually when the Quicklaunch is inactivated and then relog, the setting does not seem to be added, as the current setting is saved during logoff i guess. any solution?

hmmm is this a "hive" sort of thing ? ... cuz when i made my own tweaks with a snapshoter i noticed that almost everytimes it snapshots more useless entries than i aim for.

i saw it once done almost the same way but it was smaller i think.

i wonder if it can be done for all users or local machine cuz the current user is a lil ambiguous besides if it were in all user or global it will be available for me no matter wich user i use.

i kinda nooby at this thing but i saw that the tweaks that really work are usually for all users or machine not current.

@wolfshade

I don't know anything about how to activate that QuickLaunch feature.

But for that "all users-issue" look at this link, maybe it'll help you: Importing HKEY_CURRENT_USER Registry Tweaks

this has been discussed in before, but me being the nice guy i am will recap for ya...

i only need the quicklaunchbar

i have used regshot and i know the keys but they dont work :)

for example:

;kleine pictogrammen in start menu
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1935655697-1767777339-682003330-500\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Start_LargeMFUIcons"=0x00000000

;disable tabs in messenger
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1935655697-1767777339-682003330-500\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\DisableTabs: 01 00 00 00

the second i have changed to the first. for example the [ and ] and "

what i am doing wrong?

First of all HKEY_USERS entries won't work cuz the serial S-1-5-21-1935655697 etc. is different from one install to another.

I want to know if i set the settings in an explorer window then "reset all folders">apply then "like current folder">apply then look in the regs at the

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams]

"Settings"=hex:09,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,77,7e,13,73,35,cf,11,ae,\

69,08,00,2b,2e,12,62,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,43,00,00,00

u see there is a "01" if u look from the last to the first number ... i got a 02 or a 04 instead allthough the settings are for statusbar and detailed view so i guess htis isn't to acurate -- whats the corect solution? Is this the right way to extract a correct binary for yourself (my method)???

That number seems also to grow in steps of two now its 06 what kinda flag is this? :)

that key saves any settings you ahve. Detail view, Arrange Icon....all those...

as for loading the QuickLaunch.....

it works from cmdlines.txt. The settings HAVE to be loaded before the desktop loads.

for it to work on your current intall, just trying to reg file, you have to log in as a different user, load up that other user's hive into Regedit, and then add the entry, or you could use the SID HKEY_USER for the test, but it won't work during an actual install. or you could load up a RunOnceEX entry, that then calls teh Registry file to import the Quicklaunch settings. But it has to be done BEFORE the desktop loads.

As for accurately getting the binary numbers, just set whatever settings you want, and export the key. It will retain the correct settings. Though some settings you think are in it, may not be, so don't blame the key.

no i don't expect anything but to behave logically and the thing is that flag is going upwards in steps of two every time i apply the same exact settings so i'm not sure wich number to put in there!!! :)

I cannot be sure of exporting any of that entries until that number stays fixed as my settings are.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams]

"Settings"=hex:09,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,77,7e,13,73,35,cf,11,ae,\

69,08,00,2b,2e,12,62,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,43,00,00,00

That bolded number first jumped to 02(its the only one thats changing) when i apllied the settings manually on explorer then it had gone in steps of 2 ever since although i applied the same settings every time in a row :rolleyes:

After i tested it a couple more time it has gone from pair numbers to unpair numbers again its curent value its 09.

Isn't there somewhere a documentation on these flags?

I didn't tested the others although i trust allanol for the quick launch hope i get wich one it is:)

Edit: /*wrong statement*/

See posts below...

In the meantime there's an AutoIt script I found:

Run ("rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Options_RunDLL 1", "", @SW_HIDE)
WinWaitActive ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties")
WinShow ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", "", @SW_HIDE)
WinActivate ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties")
$var = ControlCommand ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", "", "Button5", "IsChecked", "")
If $var = 1 Then

WinClose ("Taskbar and Start Menu Properties")

Else

ControlCommand ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", "", "Button5", "Check", "")
ControlCommand ( "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", "", "Button11", "Check", "")

EndIf

perhaps (thinking outload at the moment in reality) if we used SETX or REG to return the binary to a variable, we then echo it out to a temp file, and when we get the the right byte (perhaps usign for loop, and echoing 2 characters at a time) we replace ti with the "on" byte, and continue through the loops. We then return that to a variable, and reenter it into the registry.

Any DOS people out there? (I never quite understood for loops. I learned them from C, and never really understand the DOS ones....dunny why)

SolidasRock...

i have used regshot and i know the keys but they dont work

Most of the tweaks need a reboot.

As for the hex i mention earlier ...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams]

"Settings"=hex:09,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,77,7e,13,73,35,cf,11,ae,\

69,08,00,2b,2e,12,62,04,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,43,00,00,00

I made an educated guess so i need someone to confirm...

I think the bolded flag(the only one that changes during repeated applying of same settings) is the cascading pozition flag if u know what i mean ... the poz the window takes on a diagonal on your desktop device context.

One more thing i would like to add ... what if i export the whole "streams" hive and use it will it have side effects beside the setting i would use ?

e.g. all entries under this key/dir
