mutahir Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 Hello Everyone,I have P IV says 800Mhz FSB in BIOS, (Intel), i read some where PIV Extreme? What is this version? any website/reference where i can read about L2 cache, what does this mean?in a processor/motherboard desc. it says 800mhz fsb, L2cache 1MB, what is this??Thanks Mutahir
Blam-O! Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 L2 cache reffers to the amount of memory that is built-onto the processor chip.to put it another way think of it as a glove box in your car. An easy way to access needful items at a short distance, in a short amount of time.example: If you had to go to your trunk to get a map....this means you have to get out of your car and walk to the rear of your car to get the map, and then walk all the way back to the front. this i a very long and timming process. Especially if you had to do it 100 times a second.now on the other hand if you would keep that same map at a arms length, like a glovebox, then you would not have to get out of your car again thus making things faster. And if you had a really big glovebox than you could put even more things in it at a arms length. therfore making life easier! So keeping in mind that L2 Cahce is just a memory pocket for common needed things, and that it makes commands easier for the processor to process, it just makes things fater!!!you can search the web for more Tech info that would explain this better. But in short, more memory is better. try www.google.com for more info as i don't know any specfic places.hope this helped
Jazz Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 JEES u got that and u dont even know what that means ???Just an example of how unjust God is ! I'm waiting to get my hands on such a a system...Probably i'll get a whole new board/cpu/ram/hdd/gpu combo when Longhorn comes out, i'm saving all that i can till then
XtremeMaC Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 Jazz that happens all the timethe most annoying thing for me is, those rich ppl who go out and buy a Lamborghini go to the shops and they're like, "give us your most expensive car" they probably never heard of Lamborghini's... anyways there are many more examples which end up in tragedy.. ok back on topic (no flaming) (also I've to mention maybe it was a gift? don't judge b4 u really know what's going on..)
gandalfgrey Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 It is Prescott, not EE.EE: 2 mb L3, 512 kb l2prescott: 1mb l2
mutahir Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 Hello All,appreciated all the comments Well, it helped me as since i started learning computers i was always confused in this cache thing, and i am not a v.rich person who wud go and buy the most expensive car xtreme mac, i like computers and its my learning days so i was just making sure what it means, and iam never afraid or ashamed to ask:) you never know in this industry....Many thanks for all your comments, and this is a very helpful forum site and ppl are very nice as well, thanks and regards to all of youMutahir
mutahir Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 Thanks very much BLAMO , i shud have mentioned your name in thanks list I am now confused in what does it really means by L2, L1, i can assume its level 1 cache, level 2, so does this mean, that higher it goes the higher the level...I will also look it up on tech sites to get a reference on it, never went deep into the pc architecture Thanks for your answerMutahir
mutahir Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 Hello All,Once again Sorry plz if you all think iam eating your heads:)I downloaded a utility from Intel's websitewhich gives me this...description----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Intel® Processor Frequency ID UtilityVersion: 6.5.20040203Time Stamp: 2004/05/27 01:45:39Number of processors in system: 1Current processor: #1Processor Name: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHzType: 0Family: FModel: 2Stepping: 9Revision: 17L1 Trace Cache: 12 KµopsL1 Data Cache: 8 KBL2 Cache: 512 KBPackaging: FC-PGA2MMX: YesSIMD: YesSIMD2: YesSIMD3: NoNetBurst Microarchitecture: YesExpected Processor Frequency: 3.0 GHzReported Processor Frequency: 3.0 GHzExpected System Bus Frequency: 800 MHzReported System Bus Frequency: 800 MHz---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Any comments on this??? is this a good cache memory which I have got, Thanks and regards for everyone's time hereMutahir
XtremeMaC Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 well i think u're asking the wrong question....there are 3 types of p4 these days 1 with 512k l2 cache1 with 1mb l2 cache1 with 2.5mb l2 cache.other than that they're all the sameso they're all good. not much of a difference in them.amd athlons are little different...
Blam-O! Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 Thanks very much BLAMO , i shud have mentioned your name in thanks list I am now confused in what does it really means by L2, L1, i can assume its level 1 cache, level 2, so does this mean, that higher it goes the higher the level...I will also look it up on tech sites to get a reference on it, never went deep into the pc architectureThanks for your answerMutahiraahh shuks!!! no problem and by the way i think youur are taking this whole "L2 Cache" thingy too seriously.Start with the easy stuff first and work your way up to the harder things lator. You can't run before you learn how to crawl..but on the other hand more info can be very usefull on the user's end; as long as you can handle all the techy geek stuff.peace out
Blam-O! Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 so they're all good. not much of a difference in them.amd athlons are little different...true...and:honestly you can't compare specs between AMD & Intel. they are both diferent architecture. therfore compare them by benchmarks and porformance.
