Where to begin ?

For the past month i have been trying to make my very own unnatended DVD

without sucess i may add

I would really like to get this working as my 15 year old son insists on breaking my computer!

I don't know what he does or why he does it, for example i switched the computer on one day to see a new boot screen with a picture of a toilet on it saying "Windows XP sh*t* edition" although very amusing the PC would not boot the next day.

Now i am very compitant on the PC and love the occasional game of UT, CS or TFC but i keep having to format or restore the computer and it takes a few days before i get everything the way i want it again.

To the point of this -

Would someone be kind enough to talk me through it on msn? or do the bat / cmd files for me?

i have slipstreamed SP2 into XP pro so far and can setup the unattended XP install only. I still want to add a few programs and Drivers into it but the bat/cmd just has me lost.

I *think* the only real help i need is the bat/cmd files and where to put them and where to put the drivers and programs.

I would also like to try out all the reg tweaks and replace the windows wallpapers and boot screens with my own if thats not too hard?

have you checked out that site? That tells you switches to common programs, and where to place files and what not. Also how to deal with drivers.

The more advanced stuff like bootscreen is found here in the forum. Specifically in the thread entitles "Giving Your Windows Cosmetic Surgery " in the Sticky section.

As a side note, Steam isn't the new Half-Life. It's Vavles new online playing and subscription system. It allows you to buy and download teh game conviently.

A nice handy search could yield positive results. However, you probally won't find someone to give you stuff. It takes some peopel a few months to get the disk right (I'm still working on it, and it's been a over 6, but I keep changing updating and such). It's always better to do it yourself, and if you're really compitent at teh computer, then it won't take you but a week to get it working right. It's the switches that take the longest then anything else. If you stick with batch files, then it won't take you long. It's advancing to XPlode or RunOnceEX where people get stuck as the syntax gets rather tricky with quotes.

I have actually read it over and over then i get confused so i start again from the begining but always get stuck when it comes to the bat files. That gets a little more complicated as in what to write, where to put it etc... in all honesty i even started just to copy the bats from the examples page ( http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/examples.htm )

I've also tried to re write the steps in notepad so i would know where i had stopped the previous night but it didn't help (made things worse)

As a last ditch attempt to make one i thought i could join the community and ask for a little help there, if i could get some help with the bat files and drivers then told exactly where to put them i think i would be on my way to completing it.

alrighty....let's start from the beginning...

it's always simpler to start from a working source. You say you already have a working SP2 CD that's unattended right? Just want to add programs and drivers.

Most drivers are tricky. They come in a EXE for that then extact's it's setup. Just right-click on the file, and click Extract. You'll need either WinRAR or WinZIP to achieve this. Inside there will be a Setup.EXE file most likely, and files and folders. Inside one of the folders will by XP drivers. Or collectively all the drivers. The folder contains the INF files and the CAT files. Just look for those, and you should get most of the drivers. If the drivers however don't have this, or you want to install it's software, most use an InstlalShield installer. Refer to the Unattended website, Under Applications and at the bottom of the menu. It tells you what to do with those.

Follow the drivers page. And add the entry as given, but with your folder structure. Add the OEMPnPDriversPath like it tells you to. Also make sure you add OEMPreInstall=YES under [unattend] in your Winnt.sif file.

Once you get the working, report back. It's always better to take smaller steps then giant ones and screw up. It's hard to find the cause.

for most ppl

this should work simple and easy

1. slipstream sp2

2. create a folder called d:\xpcd (where d can be any drive with enuff space)

3. put ur slipstreamed xp source in this folder

4. create a folder called d:\xpcd\$oem$... this folder is going to be the main place for all ur customisations etc.

5. make all the appropriate changes in the winnt.sif file as listed in the unattend site.

6. now here comes the choice part. u hv a number of options: u can install all ur software at a number of stages which include:

- a. svcpack.inf - 13 min mark

- b. cmdlines.txt - 12 min mark

- c. guirunonce - when windows first boots

i would recommend u go for cmdlines.txt as it is one of the simplest ones, yet also b/c it allows u to catch ur mistakes early on, ie u dont hv to go through with the entire setup and wait for windows to boot the first time to spot the mistakes. but its upto u. ill continue my explanation using cmdlines.txt example

7. create a file called cmdlines.txt in d:\xpcd\$oem$ with the following contents:

[COMMANDS]".\$1\Install\apps.cmd"

".\$1\Install\hotfixes.cmd"

8. now create another folder d:\xpcd\$oem$\$1\Install stuff here gets copied to ur c:\install during installation

9. in this new folder create the following:

- a. file apps.cmd

- b. file hotfixes.cmd

- c. two folders called Apps and Hotfixes

10. in your apps folder, dump all the applications u want to install, eg msn, photoshop etc, and in the hotfixes fodler dump all the remaining post sp2 hotfixes

11. now set up ur apps.cmd as follows: for each application.... u hv to start it with the correct switches, and make sure its installation finishes until u move on to the next stage. And for most applications, ul hv to setup the executables properly which is explained quite well in the unattend site.

so for eg for msn messenger http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/applications/msnmessenger.htm says u should extract the downloaded setupdl.exe file and extract the file msnmsgs.msi from the exe to d:\xpcd\$oem$\$1\install\Apps\Msn messenger\

start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\Apps\msn messenger\msnmsgs.msi /qb

you hv to do this for all the applications u wish to install. you can get the silent install swithces (like /qb) for each application in the forums. theres a sticky post titles unattend application switches. head there.

at the end of the file..just typte

exit

12. now set up ur hotfixes.cmd file as follows: for each hotfix file, determine whether it is type1 or type 2. the difference is explained quite well in the unattend site. when it comes to the unattend cd, they both hv different switches thts all

so for a type 1 hotfix like Q******1.exe, you will add the following to ur file

start /wait %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\Q******1.exe /q /o /n /z ( pls double check the swithces from the unattend site)

and for a type 2 hotfix like Q******2.exe u will add the following

start /wait %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\Q******2.exe /Q:A /R:N

dont forget to add 'exit' at the end of the file

13. for the drivers adding part, i think alanoll is already guiding u. just follow his wise trail and you should be there in no time.

Since you are just making an unattended CD for you own computer when it gets messed up I would suggest using an Imaging app (ie. Norton Ghost) instead of trying to make an unattended CD.

I have spent the past 2 days trying to simply make an unattended CD with sata drivers on it. Finally finished it tonight and it didn't work.

Would somone make the folder structure and include the SATA drivers (Abit KV7 via) zip it up and email this to me?

i can then add the "winnt.sif" and move the contents of my XP pro SP2 cd accross.

Too bad you've given up regardless of all the help you've got here. Perhaps, you don't need an unattended CD in the first place. Just create a limited account for your son, and that's gonna be it.

Thats actually a great idea and i may just do that

i would still however like to have a cd with the SATA drivers installed (i have built a new PC with SATA only and have no floppy drive)

I can help you with the SATA Drivers....

I am guessing you have no floppy drive in the machine that is using the NF7-S mainboard? that mobo uses the silicon image 3112r sata raid drivers...

you should have got a floppy disk with your mainboard called ABIT RAID Driver Disk v1.21 or similar....

on the floppy disk, locate the folder that contains the INF files for your controller (should be in a folder named silicon\3112)...

copy all the files from this folder to your "$OEM$\$1\Drivers\3112" directory and edit your winnt.sif so your OEMPnPDriversPath has an entry "Drivers\3112"

Now, in I386, find the txtsetup.sif and open it up, at the bottom of the file (be careful not to go past the EOF character which looks like a little square box) paste in the following:

Now, the trickyish part...

In your Drivers\3112 directory, there is a file si3112r.sys... open a command window (cmd) so you are in the same directory as si3112r.sys and you need to enter the command

makecab si3112r.sys

close the command window and look in the Drivers\3112 folder.. you should have si3112r.sys and si3112r.sy_

Copy the si3112r.sy_ to your I386 directory... and that should add your sata drivers correctly... all done... leave the original si3112r.sys where it was...

next problem?

I have made my xp cd for the NF7-S but cannot test yet (main PC)

i would still like one for the ABIT KV7 (via sata) as thats my test PC now.

i have downloaded the drivers from -
