wimb Posted April 6, 2024 Author Posted April 6, 2024 (edited) In case booting from USB with PE is not available we can use Windows Shift Restart to arrive in Windows Recovery Environment. In WinRE blue menu Advanced Options we can use Command > notepad > File Open > Run as Admin WinNTSetup_x64.exe and Select Captured WIM file of Windows 10/11 x64 and use Setup for Apply in VHD e.g. Inject New System in VHD next to existing Windows. Should you add the Offline Update MiniTool to the PE_Tools launcher? Some end users may find it really useful.

Thank you for the Link and I think it is certainly an interesting application that can be quite useful. The wumt_x64.exe size is 14.3 MB and makes it less suitable to integrate it in PE_Tools, but we can use it as a standalone app. 1
pioj Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 I got compressed under 4 MB by means of UPX and seems to run fine. But I agree, it may not be as suitable as the rest of the tools... Thx!

Ben.Jmgaming Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) Forgive me if I should be starting a new thread for this question, but I'm wondering if this toolset would work for creating a non-persistent VHD of Win 10/11 that already has added files, programs, and drivers that could be directly booted from a USB thumb drive on known hardware? I know that might seem silly, but I am required to come up with a way of automatically booting a non-persistent windows OS VHD that can be verified by checksum and cannot be tampered with. If so, what would be the steps I should follow in this case? Edited January 13 by Ben.Jmgaming
wimb Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 (edited) Booting with PE WIM file from RAMDISK is non-persistent. It means the changes are never saved and booting with such Windows 10/11 x64 in PE_*.wim file is always the same. Follow procedure described on page 3 of Manual VHD_Compact.pdf How to use Make_WinPE program - Make PE file boot.wim from Windows 10/11 x64 ISO file for Booting from RAMDISK Prepare first your USB Portable SSD as described on page 1 of the Manual by using USB_FORMAT program In Make_WinPE program you can select the USB Boot Drive as Boot Drive for the PE_*.wim file that you are going to create In Make WinPE program you can select USB NTFS Drive as WinPE Drive. The created PE*.wim file is copied to folder WinPE on WinPE Drive. I hope this is what you are looking for, Or do I misunderstand your question. On the other hand If you Install Windows 10/11 x64 in VHD then the changes after booting are persistent. Such Windows To Go in VHD is booting as FILEDISK and behaves just as normal Windows. VHD loaded into RAM for booting as RAMDISK would be non-persistent, but is not supported. Instead use PE_*.wim file for booting from RAMDISK which is reliable and non-persistent.
