The PC was on AHCI mode; the Thinkpad R60 only provides two options in the BIOS: "ACHI" and "Compatibility." Thank you for the clarification of limited high drive speeds. Not sure what the issue is, but the display driver is not allowing higher resolutions or better colors despite installing the chipset and display driver just fine.
