New (?) hosts file list

Recommended Posts

I saw something like this years ago for a hosts file ... I didn't look into it, I think it had zeros.

I have a question about a hosts file being a 0.0.0.0 version or a 127.0.0.1 version.

Which one is better or works better? I use the MVPS Hosts file.

Surprisingly (or maybe not) it depends on the OS:

^^ Any word on which one (0.0.0.0 vs. 127.0.0.1) is better to use on Vista and Win7?

The info we have comes from the MVPS site:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

Important Note: The HOSTS file now contains a change in the prefix in the HOSTS entries to "0.0.0.0" instead of the usual "127.0.0.1".

This was done to resolve a slowdown issue that occurs with the change Microsoft made in the "TCP loopback interface" in Win8.1.

If you read it "backwards" it states (more or less).

We have used successfully for years with XP, Vista and 7 (and even 8) the 127.0.0.1 prefix, but the good MS guys changed something in Win 8.1 (and possibly later) that causes a slowdown, so we resolved to use the 0.0.0.0 instead.

From a theoretical point of view 127.0.0.1 means "home" or "loopback", whilst 0.0.0.0 is "an invalid address":

In a nutshell, try using 0.0.0.0, it should be faster anyway and it does not interfere with a local web server (if any).

Thanks JorgeA and jaclaz,

I hadn't realized that MVPS had made the change from v127.0.0.1 to v0.0.0.0. After reading your post from yesterday I had decided to keep using 127.0.0.1 with XP but I've been using the other version.

Seems to be working OK.
