thecavern Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Hi, I started having a proble with MIE 9 a few days ago. Whenever I tried to use it it would not connect to any web site. After doing some research, I was able to rectify the situation by going intoTOOLS > CONNECTION > LAN SETTINGS. I would then click off "Use a proxy server for your Lan...". The only problem -- there is no "Apply" button. Therefore, everytime I shut down and boot up again I have to go intoTools and "unclick" that box again. Is there another way to keep this setting "unchecked" ? Jim
Tripredacus Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Is or has this PC been on a domain recently?
thecavern Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Not that I'm aware of. However, I just ran a McAfee Scan and got rid of two "Trojans".
thecavern Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Another stange occurance ----- A few days ago two new "Shortcuts" popped up on my PC. They both read "desktop.ini". I checked the properties of each. One is "C:\Users\/Public\Desktop". The "public" one is erroneous since I'm not on a public computer -- it's my home PC.
Tripredacus Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 There are indeed 2 Desktop.inis. One is in your profile, one is in the public profile. Having them both appear indicates you have set to show hidden system files in Folder Options.
thecavern Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 I did figure out the desktop.ini and changed my settings. In regard to the LAN setting above -- is there a way to "Apply" when I unclick the box ? Or is there a setting I can update ?
Tripredacus Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Well something is rechecking it. It could be a network security program or antivirus, or something in scheduled tasks. I have heard that even malware can do this. I read maybe 3-4 different ways to get around it on this other site:https://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/threads/15558/cant-turn-off-proxy-server-in-my-connections-setting
thecavern Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 I've tried a number of suggestions on "daniweb". So far none have worked.
jaclaz Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 What do you have in:"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2289942/en-us Also (maybe useful):http://www.tweaklibrary.com/Software_Applications/Internet-Explorer/27/Disable-changes-to-Internet-proxy-settings/10224/ jaclaz
