my hard drive is ntfs formated, im running windows xp home. Every guide I find tells me to go to the security tab and change user permitions and stuff, but i dont have that.

does anyone have any ideas?

Unless there's a registry hack (I'm sure there is) you need Pro. Home had some neutering done to the ntfs.

I have Pro and its the same thing as sven... Don't know what's going on...

Xp home or pro has encryption as well as hidden file capability. However, nether have the option to password directories. You'll need to install a third party program to accomplish those tasks.

I'm sorry. I must have been remembering seeing the security options in either NT or Win2K. My bad.

For XP Home

Boot into safe mode then you will have the security tab.

For XP Pro

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab> uncheck use simple file sharing. You should now have the security tab.

you also you the ntfs protection manager from Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a.

Extract the package with the /X switch. Put WINFILE.EXE in your %windir%.

So, you have access to the filesystem without a boot into safe mode

There is also a commandline utility with the name "cacls.exe".

Is there a way to have a directory locked, so that when you try to go in t here it asks you for a password?? Cuase if someone is logged in as you, they can get in the directory cause of the rights... right?? or not??

well, i want it to be accessible from all users, but need a password. like to get to my text files from say, my brothers account, without him deleting them.
