What Changes to the look of Office 2013 can be made?

Hi folks!

Background Information:

I have a customer who has bought a Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus via me. We discussed software in the beginning and she needed Outlook, so I suggested Office Home and Business 2013 because Office 2010 wasn't available anymore.

If I am honest - I could find an outlet with an Office 2010 - but it meant buying from a company I have had no previous dealings with...so I just recommended Office Home and Business 2013.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus started life with Windows 8.0 but Before I had bought it for my customer it had been upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Windows 8 is in my opinion the crapiest version of Windows from Microsoft for a long time...MY OPINION....lol and the Windows update to 8.1 has caused many problems for the hardware in a lot of laptops from different manufacturers....

I digress...lol

The Samsung offers a fantastic (3200 x 1800)...My customer works with an external monitor and Samsung recommended several monitors. we chose one  that can give a good 1920x1080 on a 24" screen via Micro HDMI to HDMI.

My Customer didn't want a huge screen and this one is pretty good in my opinion: SAMSUNG S24C650PL 23,6" WIDE TFT LED BLACK

The problem as my customer sees it:

My customer has been complaining of poor clarity when using several different programs...but worst of all Office 2013. She has complained bitterly about not being able to get a clear picture despite having the best settings for this new external monitor....

She complains of Word being fuzzy and not as clear as it was on the old computer....I have tried to point out that there are huge design differences and general look of 2013 compared with 2010....

On Office 2010 the font has a nice clear black colour and on Office 2013 it has the dark grey colour....which to some appears fuzzy and not clear and crisp as the Office 2010...I say it is a design aspect of the product..(I think she needs to get glasses)...

On Windows 8.1 there are limitations as to what you can change to improve the look of menus, Icons, fonts, etc.

Are there Changes that can be made to  the backgrounds in Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook that would give the appearance of a clearer crisper font...?

Have we some experts here that know the in's and out's of Office 2013 and what can be changed to improve the appearance.....OK...not personally saying I think there is anything wrong with the appearance as it is...just want to give the customer options, so that she thinks it is acceptable.

Are there any settings in Windows 8.1 that could help?

Well, no.

You cannot do this.

If you want some help in changing the crappy looks of the crappy Windows8/8.1 AND of the crappy MS Office 2013, we need before a signed affidavit where you state, under oath, that you firmly believe that they are crappy (as a whole) and particularly that they are crappy looking.  ;)

Seriously now, your customer is right  (though she may need glasses nonetheless ).

Anyone with more that two working neurons AND not payed by MS are crying about this issue since the very release of the suite, and of course MS did nothing to make things if not much better at least acceptable (the three shades of gray choice is obviously a joke):

http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/outlook-help/change-the-office-theme-HA103355148.aspx

"bleak", "pale", "depressing":

Now the issue is that any "real" user of Office is a "real" user of Office because he/she started with an earlier (i.e. working/usable) release, and AFAIK everyone I know that had a chance to NOT use the 2013 (or 365) version of Office did so and actually continue using a previous release (be it 2000/XP/2003/2007 or 2010, and BTW my wife still daily uses the 97 version of Word and Excel with no issues whatever).

All the other people (while still hating the new UI) don't use much Office anyway so all in all it seems like there was not enough motivation for any of the good tweaking guys to find a way to regain access to themes/visual adjustments of the Office UI.

There are seemingly very little things that you can do to mitigate the nonsense. :(

Though there is a project (at a very early  stage) where some people are attempting a go at it:

Hi jaclaz!

OK....you gave me lots of depressing Reading...

I know I am a bit late in saying what most have already said.....just can't for the life of me understand what Microsoft use for ideas when designing stuff...

Do they listen at all to the people that buy their products....or are they basically so stupid that they just go on coming up with stuff based on their ....obviously very limited ideas design department, no actual idea of how it is in the real World.....just get so angry thinking about all the major blunders that basically could be avoided if they weren't so **** arrogant....and just listen to the public...

If they had listened to half that was written on this forum before releasing Windows 8 - then they would have saved themselves some very embarrasing sales figures...

I appreciate that there are a lot of projects to fix Microsoft blunders....not really an option at the moment for my customer...bit of a whiner at the best of times....lol

I do appreciate your time and effort to put me in the Picture... :thumbup

Hi MagicAndre1981 :thumbup

Yes I hear you...just not easy when products are no longer available and customers need Office.. with Outlook and Home and Business is the cheapest way to get Outlook...

Hadn't really had the time to see that Office 2013 was so crappy.....

My impression is that the flaw is before and outside the complete lack of "sensibility" towards customs feedback.

See this "old" article:

A pyramid built along Peter's principle:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle

is already bad enough, but when the only chance for a "brick" of the pyramid to move up is to become a yes-man (or yes-woman) and you assemble "clusters" or "departments" (keeping the information exchanged between them to the bare minimum) and put them on purpose one against the other, that is not for the survival of the better, it is the survival of the one that can better surf over the waves at every major storm AND that can manage to float until the next storm arrives.
