MS is quickly pulling the plug on MSE. They cant wait to kill off XP. Geez! They could have at least waited until the end of day.

I've been monitoring the MSE pages every minute with a Chrome extension. It started changing about a half hour ago. Little by little, they edited it until we have this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

Weird! I thought they specifically stated they would continue to support it? Maybe they meant just the definitions? Thanks for heads-up.

I assume you're working on the EOS UDC script? No need to answer unless you're compelled, as I will simply keep checking.

I am not seeing that about XP ... "Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer available for Windows XP" ... when I go (now) to that first link I still see XP listed ... maybe it's there somewhere but I don't see it.

Well, it may SAY that, but go "select your version" - Vista and Windows7 shows only.

edit - ARGH!!! Same files, they DID scrub XP from the Version Selection, though.

It downloads for me at both links ... on the first link posted when I hit the green download button ... not sure if it's for XP but something is downloading and at the second link you have a choice for either the 64 or 86 version. I don't use MSE but it seems to still be there.

@-X- It may be your browser is "reporting" that. I'm not on XP ATM (nunya biz ) and am using Firefox12. Nonetheless, the links you gave are the same as for the Vista/Win7 files dated 10/24/2013 and the MPAM-files are as-of today (AFAICT).

Not the browser. Same with Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera (The original one. Not the Blink based one).

Perhaps your ISPs have a stale cache?

I even routed the traffic through a UK and Hong Kong VPN after clearing my cache and get the same page.

OK, folks... they pulled a fast one on us. The links WERE ok and the filedates WERE October 24, 2013. They have since been "updated" (even the contents as viewed) to specifically exclude XP. The Version of the "wrapper" has even changed.

FileHippo is the correct one (as compared to EXACTLY before they did switch-a-roo) for x86. The definitions link givenundoubtedly still stand. The XP x64 version has gone "poof".

Lucky me, I got them both before MS clobbered it.

edit - for the XP (Vista/7) x64, Web Archive saves the day.

Also note, entereing the Post#1 x86 link also yields a March date that is still valid (same as Filehippo). A comparison of the NEW vs OLD (either x86 or x64) clearly shows what changed, if anyone really wants to go that route. Whether "support" for NEW could be forced by "modification" shall be left up for debate. Any takers? Note that it would involve upacking and -maybe- modding the EPP.MSI (and perhaps others or replacing?), even -if- it worked.

I'm certainly not crying. I don't use AV. I only started this thread for the many people that like MSE because of it's small footprint.

I'm just disappointed but not at all surprised that MS started pulling plug before EOL.

Well if this is happening already, then I wonder how long all the actual updates will still be available?

... -X- had it right in the first post ... only now it's "grab and save" everything fast, the lights may go out sooner than later.

Sounds like desperation on their part ... get XP off the stage as fast as possible. The last official updates were released just a week ago and M$ is busy. All this this in one week ! ... wonder what will happen in week two.

Yesterday, I did an image backup on my three XP computers ... cleaned all the junk out, all the final updates were installed ... got everything exactly the way I want it, so now I have the perfect Factory CD (except it's a DVD now!) for any catastrophe. Those that don't remember those early days, when you bought a new computer ... there was always a "Factory CD" or CDs with the computer for going back to square one after a disaster. I'm sure those are no longer in the box these days.

My next project will be to update some older software programs to newer versions ... when I figure out what programs need to be updated ... if I decide to update, like we all know ... sometimes newer versions aren't all that great, then I will do another image backup ... but I will always have the "final backups" from yesterday (Apr 14th) to get back to. So far the backups seem to be 100% perfect, I have never had a "perfect" backup, close but never perfect, always find something not right and that may happen ... looking good so far. I always have a list of what needs to be done, this time I seem to have had a very good check list.
