Sound Blaster 16 Questions

I installed a Sound Blaster 16 ISA CT2980 PnP in my 466is Win95 computer. These are the drivers I found for it on Creative's site. Should I install all these drivers?

I had to properly Google to find where you had gotten that. To make matters worse, I apparently can't download because the "Download" links are roads to nowhere.

Expand the "more" to get the filenames, then google (example)

You'll want/need the DOS/WIN3.x files as well (the "other" ones you didn't list) if you want to run DOS games in MS-DOS mode. I had previously given some links for some "SET BLASTER" type information.

I have the same files for an AWE64 Gold ISA card (still have it). ONE you left unlisted (and may be unnecessary) for DOS is "SBBASIC.EXE".

First link you just provided is just a starting point. I gave the EXACT link to the SPECIFIC selections.

Second link you just gave is the one I gave to you. Just like the MS-DOS Mode CD Drivers, they should be loaded in the same way. MS-DOS mode is NOT the same as a Command Prompt. You LITERALLY Exit Windows and Start MS-DOS which is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT set of StartUp. I have a set of DOS-Only MS Games that I start with a special BAT file that "kicks off" MS-DOS mode for each of them.

(Above is to answer your question about needing them)

Start with the Windows95 Drivers first to get it working and we'll work from there for DOS-Mode. Don't forget to Disable your On-Board Sound and REMOVE the "Device Manager" entries for it BEFORE popping the Card in.

1 - In Windows, Remove On-Board Sound in Dev. Mgr.

2 - Reboot to BIOS and Disable it - SAVE the Setting

3 - Shut Off / Unplug PC

4 - Insert Card / Plug In PC

5 - Start Windows and install Drivers

6 - Test Sound / Joystick (note: Midi is a different story)

REMEMBER that I said that Creative is (apparently) no longer providing the Files. You have to SEARCH for them as I said.

I searched for the "older version" of that CD/DVD Driver and found it in the website where I found all of your Drivers AND if you look at the the "INDEX" file (yes, it's a TXT file) you'll get a description of their purpose.

This card, marketed as a Sound Blaster Live!, did not have the full capabilities of the retail versions of Live! It used a different audio chip, not EMU10K1 but EMU10K1X, that is noticeably smaller with fewer pins. The chip does not accelerate DirectSound in hardware, nor EAX. The sale of this board by Dell created some controversy because it was not obviously marketed as an inferior or cheaper product. The card can be identified by its part number (SB0200/0203).

Ugh! It is the X! Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Actually the 16 is in the Win95 computer and the Live! was going to be for my Win98SE computer. Looks like I need to find a better card.

I would recommend what I am using which is the ESI Juli@ : http://www.esi-audio.com/products/julia/

It approaches the quality of a Lynx2 (also Win9x compatible) but at about one-fifth of the price.
