luckied Posted September 24, 2011 Posted September 24, 2011 Hello guys,I know this forum is quite old now but I'm still running 2000 as my home/small business server (WAY cheaper than 2k03/2k08) and all is well. However, I'm thinking of reinstalling my DC with a slipstreamed version but this is where things get confusing.I already have a copy of Server 2000 slipstreamed with SP4. What I would like to know is which of the following I should include (and in which correct order so as not to have duplicated/old files updating newer ones, etc.)Update Rollup 1USP 5.1 (Is work on USP 5.2 dead since the G man left? RIP)Update Rollup 2.1 (Is work still being done or should I simply use UR2? @tomaz86)any other relevant HF's or HBR's?I'd like (but not require) IE6/MDAC2.8SP1/WS5.6My server is heavily guarded and only accessible to locan LAN users. I am also looking for a software firewall/AV if any still work on the server version.Any advice would be most appreciated!-DP.S This is my first post so please, don't be too critical
tomasz86 Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 I think there are several important questions you need to answer before deciding which updates should be slipstreamed or not First of all:1. Are you going to use unofficial (post-EOL) updates?2. Are you going to use HBRs?As you're using Windows 2000 as a server I guess that stability is the most important thing here. Unofficial updates are mostly based on the official ones for XP/2003 so they should be stable in most cases. It's different with HBRs - they weren't thoroughly tested so there might be bugs in some of them.I'd suggest slipstreaming official and unofficial updates and leave HBRs aside unless you don't mind dealing with potential bugs caused by them. HBRs are included in USP 5.1 so if you decide not to use them, you should also omit USP. It's quite old nevertheless. There are some problems with UR2 at this moment so it's probably better to slipstream single updates rather than the Rollup (especially as your system is for server).Bristols' list is the ultimate source for Win2k updates. I can show you my list of updates which I slipstream but you first need to answer the two questions above
luckied Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 (edited) Hi Tomasz86!Thanks for such a quick reply. Yes, I am using it for a server and therefore stability and reliability is the number 1 & 2 concerns. So, you answer your questions:1. Are you going to use unofficial (post-EOL) updates? - Yes, as I hear the post-EOL one's are fairly stable2. Are you going to use HBRs? - Nope, as I know you are the expert on this so I trust your judgementI was thinking of going the direction of:W2K SP4 > UR1 (official) > updatesThe thing is, I'd really not want to have to manually download all 400+ updates unless a program like Autopatcher will do it for me?And the only reason why I was considering USP 5.1 was because it included IE 6, OE6 natively, which I hear is rather complicated if you attempt to do it on your own.Lastly, other than Bristol's list; where can I find out a list of all post-SP4/UR1 updates? I'm mostly thinking of the ones which are unofficial...Thanks,-DP.S No advice of FW/AV for 2k? Edited September 25, 2011 by luckied
Kurt_Aust Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 USP 5.1 works with the Server versions of Windows 2000 and yes, while it is indeed quite old that also means that any problems would likely have been discovered. The Up-to-date Windows 2000 install media creation guide will work with Windows 2000 Server but it's not quite as smooth as with Windows 2000 Professional. The Anti-Virus I use (Avast Home) won't run on Server versions of Windows but Comodo Firewall v2 (as mentioned in the guide) will work on Server 2000.
tomasz86 Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) There is at least one issue related to HBRs and USP5.1 - all described in this topicUnfortunately there is no easy way to download all currently applicable updates with one click In case of unofficial updates you can use my method of "easy downloading" which is described here. After doing so you'll have to download around 100 official updates manually. Slipstreaming IE6/OE6 is fairly easy by using HFSLIP Bristols' list is probably the best source of updates for Win2k. Almost all of the unofficial updates listed in the topic at RyanVM are also listed by bristols. Here you can see my list of updates that I slipstream. There are a few HBRs among them too but the majority of them consist only of official & unofficial updates.Files in your HF MDAC, etc.). In case of Script I'd suggest using the unofficial Script 5.8 as it's much faster than the older ones (althout it may not be useful on a server... ). My list contains WMP9/DX9 and updates for them too which you may not need on a server.FW/AV - as Kurt_Aust has already said, Comodo v2.4 is the probably the best solution for a 2K system at this moment. The newest version of Avast Home can be installed in 2K Server too if you use the "trick" mentioned in that topic. Edited September 27, 2011 by tomasz86
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) There are some problems with UR2 at this moment so it's probably better to slipstream single updates rather than the Rollup (especially as your system is for server).I use WINDOWS2000-KB891861-UR2-V4-X86-ENU.EXE with 2000 Server/Pro and haven't witness any major problems. But then again, I don't use IE6 and a bunch of other updates other people use. Here is my dmanuele Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 A little late to be replying, but I have been using ESET Smart Security (NOD32 Antivirus + firewall) in Windows 2000 Pro for several years without problems. I'm not sure about server, the "Home" version still states that it works under Windows 2000, without specifying Pro or Server.
erpdude8 Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 PROBLEMCHYLD:Do NOT include the WINDOWS2000-KB2506212-X86-ENU.EXE in your list anymore. The KB2506212 security patches contained flawed MFC42.DLL & MFC42U.DLL files.Microsoft has made the KB2854577 hotfixes to correct some problems with the KB2506212 (MS11-024) security updates.2584577 - FIX: An application that uses objects that are derived from the CArchive class may crash after you install security update 2506212You may want to consider creating an unofficial KB2584577 patch for Win2000.
tomasz86 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 (edited) Just a short explanation:2584577 for W2K exists and is included in UURollup (both ENU & Global) so there's no need to create anything more (except for a new version of USP ) Edited April 23, 2012 by tomasz86
