Computer restarting when connecting USB

Hi again

You all know me by now....like to keep you on your toes....LOL! Got a problem with one of my own computers... I can give you all the details that you need...just ask!

I should have done somethnig about this a while ago, but pressure of work....you know...

When I connect a sandisk cruiser to a usb port on the front of my computer it kills the computer and restarts it?! At the moment - I have only noticed on one of the two ports and I can't really say if it happens every time.......

What is themost likely cause of this? I use this USB memory all the time and tested it straight away in another computer without probem....I will check the obvious connector problems from the chassi to motherboard...just in case.

Hi again!

Thought I'd concentrate on this problem for a while....

I have two USB ports on the front of the chassi and they go to a connector block which cannot be connected wrongly....LOL

I retested the same port now and instead of restarting the computer it froze it..., so I have disconnected it from the motherboard....

It is strange...the chassi is an Antec ThreeHundred and I haven't known of any problems for this one....

The cable connector cable is a decent one..I have several USB connectors on mobo...and can try another one....

any ideas anyone?

Hi again!

Back on the case again!

I need som help regarding what I should info I should add with the following command:

cscript adplus.vbs -crash -pn appname -quiet -o c:\adplus (where "appname" is the .exe name of the application that is crashing)

OK! I am attaching a USB to the front port on my computer, so I am uncertain what the .exe could be?

Can someone help me with this ....Please!

I will say I upgraded my comptuter with a faster ram memory ...which it should handle, but at the faster speed it kept on throwing up BSOD's . I have since reset the memory and no BSOD's.

I have used the USB front ports without problem in the past...don't understand what is going on...

Thanks!

Because you do not know the application that is causing the hang or crash, you should use another method instead. Enable WER to collect a memory dump on any crash event:

Info on registry key involved

Example reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps]
"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,6c,00,6f,00,63,00,61,00,6c,00,64,00,75,\
00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00
"DumpType"=dword:00000002

This should generate a full crash dump next BSOD you get. Of course if you get a BSOD at any other time, it will still do it. You should back up your existing keys in that section so that you can revert back to the default setting for this after you capture your USB insert crash.

Hi Mate!

Thanks for the info will get to it.

BTW when I connect a USB memory....sometimes it just freezes the computer and some times it restarts it...I will set it up not to restart if it is a BSOD and we can take it from there...

Thanks!

Hi again!

Sorry, I must be missing something here...

Do I have to create the key?

Attached is how it looks in registry for Windows 7 Ultimate.

the WER setting is used for creating dumps of crashing apps.

I use it with this registry file:

http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/LocalDumps.reg

To get a Crash dump of the Windows add the setting from clubertis post or this KB article:

Create a complete memory dump file

Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

Click Advanced system settings on the System page, and then click the Advanced tab.

Click Settings under the Writing debugging information area, and then make sure Complete memory dump is selected.

Note By default, Complete memory dump is disabled. You can enable the option if your computer has more than 2 GB of physical RAM.

Note If you want to enable the Complete memory dump option, manually set the CrashDumpEnabled registry entry to 0x1 under the following registry subkey and restart Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
