bookie32 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) Hi againI have a Aser Aspire workstation from a customer....The first problem was the psu was vibrating the hell out of her chassis....Changed that, but on login I am getting about a half a minute into desktop and I hear a clicking sound and the screen goes black. All fans etc are still going, but I have a black screen. Even the screen's on light is lit up as working. I tried going into saftey mode and nothing happens?I can be in saftey mode as long as I like without problems. I have never heard such a clicking sound before...could it be the chipset? No drivers or programs have been added recently....I have tried testing components and everything is OK......Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can do? (Apart from chucking it over my balcony)...bookie32 Edited February 20, 2011 by bookie32
bookie32 Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 Hi -X-Well, it does to me...only not a card but inbuilt graphics.!I tried a card and restarted the computer and came to login and almost the same thing happened..it didn't go black on me, but it was just like a card not installed and a mass of colour on the screen.Of course - I hadn't got as far as adding the drivers, but it was the same problem...bookie32
allen2 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I'd begin to try it with live linux distribution or a winpe and let it run four a least two hours to see if the problem happen or not. If it happens with both, there is an hardware pb.If it doesn't then i'd try in safe mode or in vga mode, and if it doesn't have any problem there it might be linked to a strange profile setting so then i'd create a new account and test with it.
bookie32 Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Hi allen2 I like your suggestion! Thanks for that..I will give it a try today.bookie32
Ponch Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I have never heard such a clicking sound before...Or maybe a be a dumb question... but is it the client's screen you got ?Clicling sound from a CRT would indeed indicate a screen resolution or refresh rate problem (would explain that it is OK in Safe Mode/VGA Mode). Easy to solve though.
bookie32 Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Hi Ponch I am hooked up to my test screen at the moment.I have used a live Ubuntu cd for a couple of hours as allen2 suggested and no problems.. I even checked out the hard drive to make sure it is not showing signs of wear...unreadable segments etc.I then created a new user account in safe mode, but didn't even get chance to login to that when there was a click from the mobo and the screen went blank....I use this screen all the time and have not seen any problems with it yet..Just wondering if a reinstall would help?bookie32
allen2 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) If safe mode worked correctly a reinstall would solve the problem most likely as the ubuntu live cd test passed fine but might be overkill. You might chose between the fast way (a reinstall) or the repair way (which might be a lot slower) removing video driver and power management settings and perhaps other things. Ponch Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I have used a live Ubuntu cd for a couple of hours as allen2 suggested and no problems...Was it set to full resolution ? If yes, try to boot in VGA mode and from there set resolution to normal (according to your screen's specifications) then reboot.
bookie32 Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 Hi guys! Thanks for the info! I will try to look at that today...bookie32
bookie32 Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 Hi again!Well, I found the culprit.... It was a Topcom skyr@cer Wireless USB Stick 54Mbps v2....!! I didn't have any reason to suspect it because device manager wasn't showing anything...and the customer had been successfully using it for quite some time before coming to me to clean out the computer...Anyway, I did a repair of the original installation, but that didn't hellp. I thought...what the hell let us try a fresh install.... I removed the USB wireless network card and did a fresh install...Everything looked good until I added the USB with the latest driver and shore enough the screen shutdown...all fans and appliances working....I suppose something happened to it in transit to me....My customer would like to have wireless, so I am going to suggest a good internal pci card that can be moved to a new computer in the future..Thanks for all your help on this one!bookie32
Tripredacus Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I remember I used to use the practice of First Step: remove anything not needed. Of course, over the years I've forgotten to do that as often. It would have worked out well in your case I would imagine!
