I read in wikipedia .net framework version 2.0SP2 is the latest official package supporting win2k.

Is there some important update needed for it?

Here is a direct download link for .NET 2 SP2:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/6/e/c6e88215-0178-4c6c-b5f3-158ff77b1f38/NetFx20SP2_x86.exe

As far as I am aware, that is the last official release for .NET 2x for Windows 2000.

However, MFSN member blackwingcat has .NET 3.5 SP1 working:

Making a switchless installer for slipstreaming is beyond my ken, I'm afraid.

And beyond mine too.

So, I will stay with 2.0SP2. Just wanted to add relevant hotfixes/security/critical update, if any.

How can I know about them?

If it helps, the .NET 2.0 SP2 updates I show as installed on my Windows Update listing are (x86):

kb2418241, kb958481, kb976569, kb976576, kb979909, kb982167, kb983583

That should be a good start, IMO.

You're right! :thumbup

Well, I stumbled into two more updates for dotNET2.0sp2: kb971111 and kb974417, here's a summary of my checks on microsoft's site:

  1. kb958481 released for winXPsp3 and winServer2k3
  2. kb971111 needed! (replaces no bulletin)
  3. kb974417 needed! (replaces no bulletin)
  4. kb976569 released for winXPsp3 and winServer2k3
  5. kb979909 needed! (replaces no bulletin)
  6. kb982167 released for winXPsp3 and winServer2k3
  7. kb983583 released for winXPsp3 and winServer2k3
  8. kb2418241 released for winXPsp3 and winServer2k3

Of course, new infos are welcome.

I need some help.

In KB articles explaining about these updates for .net20sp2 I read there are two update branchs shipping into the package: GDR branch and LDR branch.

I can't understand the difference.

What will happen when trying to install such a package on a win2k system?

Will GDR branch be installed? Will LDR branch?

Perhaps will it refuse to run?

Well, raw dotNET framework 2.0SP2 provides its files with version number 2.0.50727.3053.

  1. KB958481 updates many components to 2.0.50727.3082
  2. KB974417 updates components to 2.0.50727.3603 (it's replaced by KB983583)
  3. KB976569 provides upgrade to 2.0.50727.3607 (GDR branch, whatever this means...)
  4. KB979909 updates some components to 2.0.50727.3613 (GDR branch)
  5. KB982167 is an update for some components to 2.0.50727.3614 (GDR branch)
  6. KB983583 updates components to 2.0.50727.3615 (replaces KB974417, GDR branch)
  7. KB2418241 update to 2.0.50727.3618 (GDR branch)

Last, but not least, we have

  • KB971111 a security update for GDIPLUS.DLL (jump to version 5.2.6001.22319)

  • 3 months later...

KB971111 is only for Windows 2000, not for XP and newer. As tomasz86 mentioned elsewhere, all the other updates listed will work fine with Windows 2000, even though they're listed for XP and not 2000. (This must be because of MS dropping support for 2000 and not bothering to list relevant updates any more.).

See

KB2446704 (MS11-028) replaces KB983583 (MS10-060).

We should have a sticky on this.
