One More Win98 AV Product

Hello,

I've recently learned of another current antivirus/antimalware product that works on Windows 98 computers:

If you click on the arrows for either "Dr. Web anti-virus for Windows," or "Dr. Web Security Space," you'll see that there are options to select versions for Win9x/ME/NT4.

I'd never heard of this program before, but it seems to have done fairly decently (I didn't say perfectly!) on a suite of tests:

There is also a free, apparently much simpler, version, but I haven't verified that it works on Win98:

For those of us who may reach back even a little bit further than Windows 98, they also offer a scanner for MS-DOS and even OS/2:

Have you heard of Dr. Web? The cynic in me insists that this is too good to be true. What do you think?

hhhmmmm, the results on the anti male ware site are interesting since Panda and Eset NOD32 failed i put panda on a machine with avg and it found several hundred thing avg missed. alot of people claim by Eset NOD32 that and avast and i think panda too on a PC enthusiast forums i use http://www.overclock.net/

Dr. Web did terribly at av-comparatives.org and then stopped being ranked after 2008. It's a legit anti-virus program, but bottom of the barrel. It combines poor detection rates AND a high false positive rate; delicious. Scanning some malware samples also caused it to crash.

Avast! antivirus 4.8 works on Windows 95 and higher, and it's still maintained by Avast.

The Avast version 4.8 is not fully mantained: not more updates/fixes at the program (at the engine for example); the virus signatures will be updated until the end of this year.

Avast 4.8 prompted a warning that the subscription will expire by end July, and recommended upgrade to 5.0.

I doubt Avast 5.0 will work for Win98. Officially, it's no-no.

Which alternative should we count on?

I'm lurking every posts on av for 98, but nobody has yet mentioned the VirIt explorer. I use it coupled with Avast.

Support for win 95/98/me is still expected and i don't see one programmed stop!

The commercial version has real-time.

The free version has one intrusion detection system. It's only detects every autorun insert in real time. Limited but very helpful tool. One extra protection than duo clamwin with clamsentinel.

Am i only using it and know it here?

Thank you for the link. I will look into it. It's good to know that there are still more AV programs out there that we can use.
