mkisofs - latest version?

So, I noticed nLite uses a version of mkisofs (never failed me) dated 10 September 2004. This got me googling for newer versions and, after a while I found what claimed to be the (stable?) latest version, compiled 30 April 2006. I tried it from Command Prompt, but it wouldn't load without cygwin1.dll (RedHat Emulation DLL), also included in the package with other cdrtools. I might run it through nLite to see if it executes silently and without problems.

What is the latest version nLite can use?

Cheers

I can confirm that the latter version of mkisofs.exe (cygwin1.dll included in the nLite program folder) won't work. nLite returned with an error "Image file was not created".

One more advice: if you are using Avira Personal (free), disable it. It prevents copying the contents of the CD to a working folder with nLite by preventing Autorun, and reported a few errors, i.e. false positives.

Thanks uid0. Bootland seems to be down at the moment, but I will look into it these days.

Edit: Downloaded and will be back with feedback.

Edit: I can confirm it is the same principle as the one I found and described in the previous posts.

This version is by reanimatolog http://bootcd.narod.ru/ and isn't supported since 2004.

Duplicate files linker (DFL) is intetgrated (-duplicates-one), nLite does use this feature.

This unofficial version did include a minor time stamp bug at daylight saving.

And adding files is limited to 2gb size.

You may ignore this at a Windows XP installation CD.

This got me googling for newer versions
Why do you need a new version?

Any version with -duplicates-one. uid0 did named a version already.

Yes, include cygwin dll files at a cygwin version.

Duplicate files linker (DFL) v0.1a by reanimatolog

Program to find double copies of files and replace it to symbolic links compatible with Win32 or MS-DOS version of mkisofs. It can be used with mkisofs to reduce the size of an ISO image (option -follow-links -cache-inodes).

Warning!

-follow-links and/or -cache-inodes does not always work correctly.

DFL is from 2003.

Cygwin is updated since, inodes are handled correctly nowadays.

Today -follow-links and/or -cache-inodes does work correctly.

You may create hard links at hard disk first and run a current mkisofs. Duplicate files are added once only.

Why do you need a new version?
there is not one reason in the world to change the version that comes with nlite

You ask 'em, you answer 'em ;) It was just curiosity. BTW, jaclaz, I tried the download link you provided and it does work as well.

BTW, jaclaz, I tried the download link you provided and it does work as well.

Sure it does. :)

It's actually the SAME Reanimatolog patch + an additional patch for growiso and to have larger than 2Gb .iso.

The point I was trying to make was that these versions are MINGW, and thus "self-contained" and should need not the cygwin1.dll at all:

http://cygwin.com/links.html

If you type

mkisofs.exe -version

you get with both files:

mkisofs 2.01-bootcd.ru (i686-pc-mingw32)

If you use a recent "normal" cygwin version, a win32 port is here:

http://www.student.tugraz.at/thomas.plank/index_en.html

you get something like:

mkisofs 2.01.01a77 (i686-pc-cygwin) Copyright © 1993-1997 Eric Youngdale © 1997-2010 Jörg Schilling

Here is a page with some "history":

http://smithii.com/cdrtools

The current development has "moved" to genisoimage:

http://mirror.averse.net/cygwin/release/cdrkit/genisoimage/genisoimage-1.1.7.1-1.tar.bz2

requires: cygwin file libbz2_1 libiconv2 perl zlib

http://mirror.averse.net/cygwin/release/zlib/zlib-1.2.3-2.tar.bz2

http://mirror.averse.net/cygwin/release/zlib/zlib-1.2.3-10.tar.bz2

but as cdob pointed out there is not one reason in the world to change the version that comes with nlite.

Well, the reference was related to "at a Windows XP installation CD".

It's recommend to change the version:

if you create a Windows XP installation DVD and add a 5GB file

like to read hard links and add files once

like to use correct time stamps or use the integrated find

If you use a recent "normal" cygwin version, a win32 port is here:

http://www.student.tugraz.at/thomas.plank/index_en.html

Yes, that's the most current official release: The author http://cdrecord.berlios.de/ refers this precompiled Binaries.

Current sources are at ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

The current development has "moved" to genisoimage:

That's a fork based on sources from 2004. This fork is different supported and was included in cygwin distribution.

Overall default integrated version is very reliable at default nLite conditions.

Ok. So, I used the mkisofs noted below. This was the most recent from SpoiledBrats link. Can you confirm? I've tried burning at 2.4x, still on a Memorex DVD. I also confirmed the DVD/CD Rom is compatible. However with all this, still the same result. I could read the contents of the disc on my Laptop (where I burned image). However, my PC does not read the disc.

Would it help to burn the image from my PC DVD burner instead of my Laptop? I will wait to hear back before trying Verbatim.

mkisofs.exe 03-Jul-2006 16:38 336K

Thanks!

Sorry to resurrect from the past! It's great to be a noob!!
