error booting from USB

i work for charter cable and I'm the tech that comes to your house to fix your cable. well they gave us these laptops with a locked down linux on it which just lets me get an ip address and browse the net. i cant install any programs or save files. neway i was trying to figure out why my Eee PC asus laptop and my personal desktop wouldn't boot from my recently created winXP install on my USB micro 16gig cruzer thumb drive when i found a guy with my exact problem using the same tutorial and he said it was solved on site http://www.msfn.org/...qs-t116766.html which just led me to this site's home page. i have searched hard here on the forumns and just found your method on how to do it. my question is. where is the the fix? i found the method on how to do it on this site and i don't know if he just gave up and started over with your method or fixed his problem. any help would be awesome. thanks ahead of time!

story: i made the boot thumb drive following the steps in this tutorial http://www.ngine.de/article/id/8 when i boot from USB in both computers i get the same error on both, happens right after windows logo appears. i get blue screen with the following error

“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,

restart your computer. if this scren appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.

Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

The error means that you are missing SATA/AHCI drivers, so the setup part cannot recognize your HDD and copy/install on it. Anyway, there is special part of the forum for installing Windows from USB

Examine your PC model, use search and find out exactly which SATA drivers you need. Then, here you will find ways of inserting them on the USB so everything goes smooth.

wait a sec. im not trying to install on the laptop from the USB, i want to install on the usb and boot from it. the sata drivers shouldnt be needed since im using the usb as main storage device. or am i confused rofl. thanks agian just brainstorming and trying to figure out for myself how it all comes together.

Well, instead of installing XP on a USB, which may not get the expected results (as you already witnessed) on different PCs, why not get a Live CD to boot from? use google search and report back.

I don't understand why you register here to talk about that tutorial when it states there is a dedicated forum.

Your problem is probably that your USB shifts to 2nd hard drive somewhere in the process when the drivers are loaded, then Windows gets lost. There might be different scenari, this word alone will attract some knowledgeable members to this thread.

You might also be interrested running this project named VistaPE from USB instead of a standard Windows.

the laptop doesn't have a disk drive. Charter had installed a locked down ubuntu which i have no root access and instead of installing a new OS over it id like to keep the original OS intact. and also have my messenger and vpn to my home network when i'm on the road and not working which is most of the day. might have a few co-workers interested in purchasing my bootable sticks for 50 bucks lol. none of them come close to being able to accomplish it on there own. Plus the challenge of determination to see this project through. I've never made a bootable windows from USB and i felt it was something i needed to experience. every new project i learn so much. and its amazing to see how so many people out there share the same interest.
