PNG graphic support for win-98

Well, my last question was such a success, I'll try this one. Is there any small, free app that can be registered or associated with .png files such that I can view them on a win-98 system?

If I open an IE6 window and drag and drop a .png file onto it, it will render the file. Was wondering what I need to do to be able to view it simply by double-clicking on it.

Hi;

It is hard finding something to not like about it!

Most (free) picture viewers support png files.

To associate png files with your viewer of choice open Explorer "View" --> "Folder Option" --> "File type" then select the file type for png, if not there, press "New type", under "New Action" type "Open" and enter the path of the application underneath.

etc.

If you need more details about this procedure, we'll help.

FYI, Tihiy [an MSFN member] made a PNG patch for all MS IE 6 browsers [which use PNGFILT.DLL].

Get it here [free]:

* Unofficial Internet Explorer 6.0/6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/NT4 SP6a/2000/ME/XP/XP SP1/XP SP1a Universal PNG View PNGFILT.DLL Fix [14 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/PNGFIX.EXE

Does NOT work with Windows XP SP2, XP SP3, 2003, MS IE 7.0 or newer!

Just make sure u have MS IE 6.0 or 6.0 SP1 already installed before applying the patch:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#6S1

I did not test this with MS IE 5.x (or older) editions.

With a fully patched 98SE system, and I assume most members who frequent these two sub-forums will have a fully patched system with PNGFILT.DLL included, then .png files can be viewed in IE6 without any additions.

If you go to the PNG Gallery at http://www.r0k.us/graphics/pngLibrary.html and save some .png files to some location such as My Pictures folder. Then clicking on the .png files in that folder will open them in IE6 and they can be viewed without problem.

Check out in particular the Round Snakes  at rotsnake_cropped.png    :wacko:   :wacko:    :wacko:

Edit: Reworded.

Original non-patched non-png-fix IE6 (and IE5) always could render png files. wsxedcrfv told us himself in his original post.

The only prob was to get another or any software associated with them so that he can double-click on them and see them this way.

I thought my second paragraph covered that!

Further investigation of viewing .png files with a fully patched IE6 has led me to the conclusion that the vast majority can be viewed either on-line or off-line without any additional software with no problem.

However if one views the test pages at the following site it seems that IE6 performs quite badly in comparison with FF 2.0.0.20 and Opera 10.00 which display perfect results.
