Partition Install Order

hi,

really appreciate the GUI prog but i have a bit of a prob...

everything is fine but during the TEXT installation phase it says cannot find "ntldr". skipped that one but then other files came up missing and in the end had to quit the installation.

did notice that the USB stick was the default when choosing the installation partition (i.e. order wise it was above the target primary partition). not sure if that makes any difference but i'm sure it being mentioned somewhere... been searching so much that i don't remember where.

anyway, anybody know what i can do to sort this?

Did you play with Removable/Fixed radio button in the GUI?

Search txtsetup.sif in root for 'rdummy', is there anything?

not really sure about what u mean about the radio button in the GUI 'cause i don't think i've ever gone into the GUI phase.

foundthe TXTSETUP.SIF thing and opened it w/ notepad but didn't find anything about the "rdummy".

not really expecting u guys to solve this s*** (although that'd be awesome!) but i do want to find out what's wrong. might need to abandon this procedure altogether but as long as i know that this ain't working for this config. although, if there's a way then... pleeeeeease!!!

I meant radio button in WinSetupFromUSB, when you open the program you will see it.

Anyway, if no references about rdummy in txtsetup.sif then most likely button was not used.

Can you zip and attach with your next post txtsetup.sif in USB root?

Can you take a picture of the partitioning screen and post it?

Did USB stick take letter U:?

concerning the partitions, not sure at which stage u wanted me to take a pic but i'm assuming u're talking about the one in the TEXT install phase where it asks u where to install?

basically, it looked like this:

U: Partition - 1 (USB-XP) [NTFS] ~ 4GB

C: Partition - 1 [NTFS] - ~ 40GB

so yes, the USB did take U:

saw somewhere that it's not good if the USB partition is the 1st in order?

ps almost forgot about the removable / fixed button. no, i did not do anything to it.

Can you post what it says about C: Partition - 1, disk 0 or 1 at what? There should be mentioned driver name as well.

What hardware is this? Laptop? Model? Desktop? Motherboard model?

What windows version are you installing? WinSetupFromUSB.log found in program's directory could be handy. Backups are in \backups\ folder, cab compressed

edit: post a few more file names reported as missing.

my basic specs:

- USB Stick: Toshiba 4GB

- O/S to be installed: XP Pro 32-bit w/ integrated SP3 (slightly customized w/ updates, add/remove services, programmes etc.)

- HDD: IDE 40 GB (single partition and no other IDE or SATA devices attached)

- System: AMD 64 X2 4800+ / Asus MOBO (M2N8-VMX) with AMI BIOS ver 1301

basically, trying to install another MOBO (Asus M2N-E). so want to try this install method w/ my current MOBO and a spare IDE drive. if it's OK then will setup a system w/ the M2N-E and XP on a SATA drive.

concerning the WingSetupFromUSB.log, i could only make sense of the parts in the beginning and end. the rest were just info about files being copied. nothing seemed to standout except for "grub4dos BS/MBR" which it said were NOT installed properly. i'm assuming that it then went on to install them?

i don't think it said anything like disk 0 or 1 about the partitions during the TEXT install phase. don't remember the missing file names either after the first one (ntldr) but after that it just went on to say that there were others missing as well. i'm going to try this again and will post the results.

OK, i think i got all the relevant infos now...

* on the 1st boot it prompts me to choose the install phase (TEXT or GUI). i think default was TEXT. anyway, went w/ TEXT 'cause this was the 1st boot.

* everything goes fine and the blue setup screen comes up w/ the following partition info:

3813 MB Disk on disk [MBR]

U: Partition1 (USB-XP) [NTFS] 3812 MB (3127 MB Free)

Unpartition space 0 MB

39261 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

C: Partition1 [NTFS] 39253 MB (38631 Free)

Unpartitioned space 8 MB

* selected C: and resumed from there.

* left the existing filesystem (NTFS) as it is in C: and it went on to copying the setup files but then...

"Setup cannot copy the file NTLDR... to retry, press ENTER... ESC... F3 to quit."

* after hitting ESC it went on to say the same thing about NTDETECT.COM then ATABOOT.SYS

* then i got the following:

"Setup cannot configure your computer to start Windows XP. There may be a problem with hard disk containing drive U, or U may be corrupted. Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3."

btw, my BIOS lists the USB stick as a HARD drive when choosing the boot priority as opposed to REMOVABLE drive. does that make any difference?

will read up more and see what's going on (and wrong) and if anything useful will post it here. maybe give the 2nd method on bootland a try...

Don't give up

Reformat the stick usign WinSetupFromUSB, make sure the radio button is on FIXED and prepare it as usual. Try setup again.

Attach the new WinSEtupFromUSB.log file.

It can be confusing actually.

To put it down in it's essential lines, USB devices (or to be more exact controllers inside USB Mass Storage devices) can be set in two ways:

Removable <-this is how 99.99% (please read ALL) of USB flash sticks are set in factory

Fixed<- this is how 99.99% (please read ALL) of USB hard disks are set in factory

Windows Setup has been coded by MS to work properly ONLY if booted from "Removable" devices.

Thus when using a USB hard disk we need a further step, using the "reversed filter driver" to trick Windows into thinking that the USB hard disk is "Removable".

sorry for not replying earlier guys. did some extensive reading... the history was especially interesting!

however, i think my issues are a bit bigger. getting weird errors while running windows like missing folders, non-working mouse, etc. (and the wave volume just went mute as i was just typing this). also, had probs w/ other OS install via USB. (EDIT: Ubuntu installation completed but had probs starting)

so before going any further down this route i gotta sort my system out otherwise i'll be wasting a lot of ppl's time incl. mine. the prob's probably w/ the hardware 'cause this program seems to be working for a lot of ppl.
