What files in Vista replace XP's TXTSETUP.SIF and

Vista's setup isn't text-based, like XP's was. It's an actual disk image in a compressed format (WIM), and the files and contents of the WIM image are actually stored in the image itself (hence why there are tools like pkgmgr, imagex, etc to service images online or off). What specifically are you trying to do?

Install to an external USB HDD. With XP, the only true alternative is (ngine.de's) Emanuel's method. All others, namely Dietmar's, Usboot, Tostis' and PWBoot, no matter whether intended for XP or Vista, rely on installing to an internal HDD or a VM, and modifying the finished installation. That I know can be done. I was trying to find out a way to do it before installing. And while I found the appropriate usb*.infs inside install.wim, I'm at a loss as to how to integrate the additional .inf necessary for it to work. You're not saying that in case I just drop USBBOOT.INF inside the inf directory in install.wim and repack the wim it'll work automagically, are you?

No, it's far more complicated than that. Although I do believe someone did do it here recently, can't remember the post though. Was very involved if I remember correctly ;). Note I've installed Vista on external USB drives many times before, but the BIOS did the magic and made it look like any old HDD (HP workstation).

Not really-really.

ngine.de method is derived form Dietmar's Tutorial 4:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...mp;#entry101631

which allows installing directly to USB devices.

Emanuel simply integrated the "F6" step in the Source CD.

As well, normally Tutorial 8 does NOT require pre-installing Vista to a IDE/SATA drive:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...mp;#entry118931

So I guess that the scope would be to automate the otherwise complex "fixing steps" that at the moment need another bootable system to be carried on.

The USBbootwatcher service:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=22473

should already be the missing step, or is it not enough in itsef?

I know that. In fact, Dietmar started it all, AFAIK. :thumbup Is he still active, nowadays? I mean, over at 911CD? I never saw anything by him at boot-land, so I guess he's not a member there...

Yea, well, that's precisely what I'm interested in achieving for Vista and/or Win 7... AFAIK, it's not been described, yet... At least not in so many words.

Perhaps... but I think not quite. Imagine the target is an Asus EeePC 4G, and no other machine is available. For XP I had success in that situation only by using Emanuel's method. And that's why I see Emanuel's method as being different, albeit derived, from Dietmar's Tutorial 4. And I do think Dietmar's Tutorial 8 wouldn't be workable in unmodified form here also. Gotta try, of course! But I won't have such an EeePC here, at hand, for the next fortnight, at least. So, at present I'm reading and planing how to do it, when it arrives here...

Wrong assumptions.

Dietmar is on Boot-land also :), though he is very hectic in his "appearances".

Typically he "breaks" in, "throws on the table" something (usually VERY interesting) and then disappears for months.

The last things he contributed were something around "XP Kansas City shuffle" on 911CD:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...c=21242&hl=

and of course XPCLI on boot-land, the single most interesting thing :thumbup since the invention of ice-cream IMNSHO, for which I completely fail to find ANYONE interested in to participate and help :(:

If by any chance you are in collaborative mood, you would be very welcome in there. :angel
