Perra Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 (edited) HiI have put in a Geforce 6800 AGP video card on my Windows 98SE computer, but I haven’t been able to find any supported drivers for that card on the Nvidia site. If you select GeForce 6 and Windows 98 on the Nvidia site the drivers listed don’t have GeForce 6800 listed as a supported video card in the readme file.I’ve tested these driver versions: 81.98 71.84 66.94, 66.42 61.76 61.21 60.86It is possible to install the drivers but they give a lot of problems. Windows protection error, games don’t work, programs don’t work, Dxdiag errors etc.Are there any supported or usable Windows 98SE drivers for a GeForce 6800 video card?CheersPerra Edited May 19, 2009 by Perra
banankrem Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 According to NVIDIA's site, there are Windows 98 drivers for the GeForce 6 series. The Link below is the download site that appeared after choosing GeForce 6 series and Windows 98 as my operating system. The version number is 81.98, so it seems that the card is officially supported.http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_81.98.htmlHave you tried installing the latest DirectX and .NET Framework?.NET Framework 1.1.NET Framework 2.0DirectX End-User Runtime InstallerI guess it's worth a try to see if it helps, even though the problem may be related to other issues.

Kwibus Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 It is the right driver Nvidia just forgot to update the readme file. If you want to be sure look in the NVAGP.inf file (in the driver package) your graphics card name should be under strings.

Perra Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 OK, in that case have they forgotten in all Readmes for the Win98 drivers I've tested. I checked driver 81.95 for WinXP and no ones from the Geforce 6 series where mentioned there either. The strange thing is that I have problems running all games I've tested and the previous video card worked perfectly. The games I've tested work with these games in WindowsXP AFAIK.Any clue what I can do?CheersPerra
dencorso Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 (edited) Has NetFramework anything to do with the graphicsNone whatsoever, at least directly. Myself, I don't see how it'd be of any help. Try the 77.72. Multibooter says it's the latest bug-free driver for 9x/ME. And he uses it with a nVIDIA 7800 GS OC (256 MiB; AGP 8x). If you have time, read the full NVidia drivers 82.69, suddenly!. I'm sure you'll find it most instructive. Edited May 13, 2009 by dencorso
Kwibus Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Do you have more than 1152 mb of ram installed?even with the right values for MaxPhysPage and MaxFileCache there can still be trouble with your graphics card.
Perra Posted May 14, 2009 Author Posted May 14, 2009 I have 1024MB RAM installed since 1 ½ year, and it has never been a problem with the old video card.CheersPerra
dencorso Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Perra, do try the nVidia drivers 77.72. But don't remove nVidia drivers with add/remove or unistall. Do it using the great freeware Driver Cleaner Pro Version 1.5 (*NOT* Driver Cleaner .NET !!!). The Add/Remove applet or nVidia's own uninstallers don't do quite a perfect job in removing previous nVidia drivers, only Driver Cleaner Pro is able to remove them completely.
Perra Posted May 14, 2009 Author Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) Yes I have tested 77.72, but it was the same as the others.According to that link is Driver Cleaner Professional 1.5 not for Windows 98.OS: Windows 2K/XP/2003I've run a uninstaller program called Trash it which scans the HD and registry first. Then I install the drivers and scan again and save the result. The Nvidia uninstaller does a rather good job though. Then I clean the registry manually.CheersPerra Edited May 14, 2009 by Perra
dencorso Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Now I'm begining to suspect your problem does not lie with the drivers, for 77.72 at least is known to work OK with even higher model cards. Do you perchance have more than 256 MiB RAM on your Geforce 6800 AGP? If so, your problem is too much RAM and has no known solution. Except for exchanging the card for one with less RAM, of course.
Perra Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 HiIt's a GALAXY Glacier GeForce 6800 128MB video card. Thanks for trying to find the problem!CheersPerra
Perra Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 HiInstalled Windows XP and driver version 66.93 and problems solved. I tried all these Windows 98 drivers:81.98 77.72 71.84 66.94, 66.42 61.76 61.21 60.86And they all gave problems when running games. I guess that Nvidia never was too concerned about making good Windows 98 drivers for the GeForce 6800 video card. Driver Cleaner Professional 1.5 can also be used in Windows 98.I downloaded and checked the readme file.CheersPerra
