multibooting with XP - Linux - XP

Hi guys :thumbup

I have the following setup at the moment:

2 sata drives.

Drive 1 has XP and Dreamlinux.

Drive 2 has just XP

Now I can boot from drive 1 and via ntldr I have Windows XP and Dreamlinux listed. I tried to add my second drive by using bootpart to edit the ntldr but I still can't boot from that listing?! I know I am probably missing something simple but can't see the wood for the trees at the moment.

Is there anyone who has any suggestions?

YES:

;)

Bootpart does NOT edit the NTLDR.

It may add entries to a BOOT.INI for bootsectors.

But what you need, you can do it easier and faster with Notepad or with a "dedicated" GUI tool.

Hi jaclaz :hello: thanks for all the info. Look - I have tried all different ways of doing this and find the code a bit daunting. So much to learn...help :blushing:

Could you look at my attachement and give a typical scenario for how to add the linux partition which is on the first drive at 2:C. The other XP is on the second drive as already stated at 4:D

I have tried adding them with bootpart and only Dreamlinux works for the 2:C partition.

If you can give me the code - I might be able to get my head around this...LOL

Appreciate your help on this matter.

Hi guys :hello:

Look...feel a bit of a plonka at the moment :blushing: I have solved the problem by reading the info supplied by jaclaz ;)

It is amazing what you can learn by reading up a bit...LOL

I have edited my boot.ini file to the following:

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 1" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

C:\bootpart\bootsect.lnx="Dreamlinux"

Now everything works fine :thumbup

Only one question regarding this particular thread...Is there a way to change the boot menu background? It is a bit boring and could do with being spiced up a little.

Thanks again for the help.

No, :( AFAIK the boot.ini choices "look" is not changeable.

Who knows, maybe it can be "slightly" applied to booke32's question below.

Hi guys :thumbup Everyone has gone Chinese on me...LOL.

I do tend to work with Linux a lot - which I have never hidden from the members here...LOL. I do love the fact you can have grub splashes and boot splashes to spice things up.

Having a list of bootable distros on a black ground isn't very inspiring but OK what the heck I can live with it...LOL I do love challenges....must be someway to rebuild XP and improve on the lack of colour...LOL

Thanks for the help on this

I didn't get you were familiar with grub.

If you are, you may want to fiddle a bit with grub4dos:

http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=66

Basically, you can make grldr bootable by using method #8 to #11:

http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/Grub4dos.htm

(or add it as the only boot.ni entry int eh "main" boot.ini on HD) and use methods #5/#6

Then have a couple of floppy images as hinted here:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=127900

Each one with a boot.ini with a single choice (thus the white text on black bakcground won't be shown ;))
