I have Win Server 2k3 R2 fully patched.

I need to reinstall my OS to get rid of some bad updates and registry hacks.

Is there a way to do this without losing my active directory, DNS, DHCP, Routing and Remote Access, and Domain Controller Settings? Also, without losing my applications, shares, and security settings.

To add to my earlier post:

Someone told me that by putting the Windows Install disk in and choosing the repair option, it would reinstall windows but not format my drive.

This is good, but what I don't know is if it will reset my services back to default.

Any help on this would be great. Thanks. :}

The problem might rely with Service Pack files (you need the SAME SP level as your installed OS), and with updates.

All "personal" data and settings should remain untouched.

Do read THOROUGHFULLY this (though it is XP related, same should apply to Server 2003):

In ANY case, do make a full image of the system "as is", just in case.

In addition to jaclaz' post above, to ensure a consistent Service Pack (I've done this) slip the service pack (i.e. SP2) while on the running system into the CD and reburn. That way you won't get that "nasty message" and a "halt" on the "reinstall over top". You will have to apply all post-SP2 hotfixes (and potentially some other items). Best to get them all now (see Complete List thread, et al) and either have them handy, or HF-slip them (I just use AutoPatcher; also Windows Update Downloader is good).

FYI, last time I did this I just copied the CD to hard-drive, slipped the Service Pack, and ran WINNT32.

AFAIK (and don't depend on my answer) it won't "reset" (too much of) anything. (it was more'n a month ago I did it and i'm gettin' a little senile :wacko: )
