Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

My drive is a 1TB Seagate ST1000340AS with the issue of BSY and not detected in BIOS. (My drive is at home, so I need to update the other information later).

It was pretty much full though - 900GB out of 931GB in use.

Hmm, from the list of drives so far, this seems to be affecting only 500GB drives. I wonder if there is a particular amount of capacity that gets hit before the drive "flips it's wig"?

In my case I was using about 8% of the total available 465GB (only OS files).

Hopefully those with the ST31000333AS don't get this problem.

http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/seagate/ST31000333AS

This site is ridiculous, just put any s***ty model and the page will be created dynamically with the chosen model, even if the model doesn't exist.

Yep! I realized the same thing!!! It does mention the BIOS boot problem too... Does this mean their service is going to be great?

Back on the seagate forum, I have read about a couple cases where the drive seems to be intermittantly detected by the BIOS.

Anyone boot up their BSY 7200.11 drive a couple hundred times to see if they can get in?

I only need 10 minutes of detection to get back the data I need. The rest is expendible....

I am no longer willing to let seagate hide this problem and continue raking in the £££ at the expense of pc users. I will be writing to newspapers, magazines, retailers and watchdog (UK) to ensure that the spotlight is drawn on this issue and i am sure if enough of us do this, then something will get published eventually. It might not help us get our data back, but it will ensure nobody else has to go through the rubbish we have.

Oh and the details of my drive for the list (bear in mind it was not delivered or installed till about 10 days after purchase):

May I suggest www.theregister.co.uk as a good place to start!!!! Once it's stared the info

will make its rounds amongst the tech websites. Don't forget to mention the poor Seagate

website support forum and to mention names too!!!!

Hmm.. the first 9QJ.. Thanks for the data!

* When you enter your code (08496) in the date code calculator (Posted by icefloe01)

I just found this:

Seagate date code calculator.

You have to create a login to get it. Once you extract the files from the zip file, you have to drill down to this point:

SeagateDateCode\SeagateDateCode\SeagateDateCode\bin\Debug

to find the executeable.

Nevermind, I just did a megaupload:

http://www.megaupload.com/nl/?d=HS5ZEL4O

You get the date: 12/Jun/2008.*

Here's a post I found on another web forum on the net. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15488709

A poster there used the software "speedfan v4.37" to monitor smart, fan speeds and temperature. It might be useful

software as monitoring software.

You should take a look at "Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population" by Google. One of their key findings has been the lack of a consistent pattern of higher failure rates for higher temperature drives or for those drives at higher utilization levels.

Failure rates are known to be highly correlated with drive models, manufacturers and vintages. This seems to be the case with the Seagate 7200.11 models. One of mine has just experienced the "BIOS not found error".

Otherwise, I've never really had problems with the small collection of hard drives in my server. I sell any drives that have had a scan error. Google reports that after their first scan error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives with no such errors

My disk is equal... 08495 ;)

I just don't want to make my serial public since Seagate can see this thread and blacklist our drives.

Would also be good to post to the deal sites..... Fatwallet.com, Slickdeals.net, Bensbargains.net, etc. They get TONS of traffic!!

I'm willing to order the hardware/software from SalvationData... As I understand, it costs $500US and comes with directions etc. Will let you know how that goes...

Seagate would be crazy to start blacklisting our drives!!!! We have done absolutely nothing to void our warranty! If they do so, they're just begging for a lawsuit.

We have already begun to switch our business over to WD.... Thousands of units per year!

Just upgraded my 500GB drive to a WD 1TB Enterprise drive! This is one that hasn't yet failed, it's my 1TB data drive that died!
