Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

No virus here, not that I know of anyway.

Could it be a coincidence? Since folks who are scouring the forums now are those whose drives had just recently died.

Folks whose drives died earlier have probably moved on and put this whole episode behind them, perhaps?

Look at the failed dates!!! 14 out of 18 or 77%!! Something must have triggered this failure.... anyone else encountered virus (thumb drive virus) around the same time as when their hard disk failed?? It happened to me, so I'm wondering if that might be a trigger.

It's obviously a SD15 firmware issue with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives.

But we have 3 below which was purchased in Dec 2007, April and July 2008. So it seems no matter when it was purchased/manufactured, it seemed to die around Nov/Dec/Jan so far. We have not seen any reports of people whose hard disk failed before Nov 2008 but you have a point, they may have moved on.

I'll contribute to this patterned list below. I'll have to find the rest of the information when I get home. I had maybe 100gb on the drive, just for gaming. Not much. Had been running for two months. I put the thing into hibernate, and then a min later brought it out of hibernate and then whoops, it is not detected in BIOS anymore. I can't use it with an external enclosure, either. It spins up fine, just not detected. Below is system setup just for reference. FYI I picked this up from MicroCenter, retail box. This was the OS drive, the jumper was still in there. All drives running fine. After I put in the WD drive, I was doing some work with it, but not sure how long it had been since WD drive was in there, but shortly after, the Seagate bombed. Going to stick with WD Black drives now

- 500 W PSU (OCZ500SXS)

- GA-EP45-UD3P with E8400

- MSI R4850-512MB

- three SATA hard drives (7200.11, 7200.9, WD Green)

- 2x1gb OCZ memory DDR2 800

- WinXP SP3 x86

Oh s***, i have one ST31000340AS:9BX158-303:SD15:CHINA bought on the last week on Dec 2008.

I hope it won't die on me, but i only use it for external backup purpose only.

Hi All,

Let's be clear here. We have already narrowed this down to SD15 firmware. The size of the drive varies. You are all beating a dead horse. We established this in the Seagate forum that was closed, and it wouldn't surprise me if the relevant posts have been deleted.

I have a friend that has one of these drives that is now displaying these symptoms that I can use as a new donor drive... (Thanks RAID5 technology!)

It is sad when this is becoming so widespread that your immediate friends are having the same failures.. :|

Seagate has a serious problem, and as we collectively keep the pressure on, they will have no choice but to acknowledge the issue or face a lawsuit. Both will be equally expensive.

The simple fact here is that 2 of the major recovery software/hardware vendors have developed a specific fix for this problem, points to a MAJOR fault in the product.

Thaks for posting the link to the pdf Nichev/ViniciusFerrao. I have managed to find some old C code that is used with the RS232. I shall be creating a small program and will do some testing this weekend, hopefully being able to pass some commands to the HDD that are listed in the PDF.

I just noticed that I had the wrong date when the drive failed, it was the 4 of Jan. The PC was not used over Christmas and was next used up the follwoing days 27, 28 29, 30, 31 of decemeber and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January.
