I'm looking for the best editor (freeware) for 98 that has:

* IME support

* native Unicode support

I used one editor before that having a HTML preview tab to allow me reading Unicode HTML pages. But I forgot its name and the software itself.

I understood that Unicode support is limited for 98, just wishing for the best.

Thanks for responding. I tried both and both are good editors. Just that none supports IME or Unicode. I'm about to try Crimson Editor, though I remembered some bad experience before. Need to start the search all over again.

Just some progress update on the search:

• Crimson editor : IME not working though it said supporting Unicode
  
• Notepad++ Unicode : Installer said that the Unicode version is not compatible with my Windows 98
  
• Notepad++ ANSI : IME not working...

According to http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/utilities_....html#globalime , none of these editors are supporting Global IME. Is it still worth trying?

Jedit has it's own way of inputting "special" languages.

There is also a "rather vague" possibility that one of the old versions of EMeditor Free can actually run on Win9x/Me, but cannot say, since official documents exclude this possibility, I guess that this:

ConTEXT 0.98.5 seems to be interesting with all those available highlighters, however it keeps throwing access violation on start and on opening the Tools menu, under 98SE (no KernelEx installed).

At last some good news for you guys, the editor I missed should be nvu.

Still testing it though. IME and Unicode is working. One minor point is that it's sort of big, I prefer small editors myself.

However I was thinking you asked for a text editor rather than a Web development tool.

Indeed, you are perfectly right. I only want an editor that supports both Unicode and IME. However, none fits yet. I'll ride on nvu and continue my search on something smaller.

EmEditor 4.13.1 does run on 98SE, however it's behavior is somehow strange and I'm not sure about it's licensing. I downloaded the standard version directly off their official site, in the Old and New section.

Yep, the "standard" or "pro" is one thing ($), I was referring to the "Free" edition that appears from time to time (and then it is removed from downloads).

The catch is, on their official site only the 4.x version is listed as Win9x compatible, while the links above point to v5.x and 6.x. Also, the other link you posted a while back leads to a dead end.

For Japanese only, I work with JWPce which doesn't need the IME. Still looking for a generic, light Unicode editor though, same as oc_dt.

nVU is based on Gecko, which before 1.9 is compatible with Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51 and newer. Kompozer is an unofficial version that's basically nVU + a set of patches to fix bugs, as the original developer has abandoned it.
