Virtual machine for 98/Me?

I'm looking for a virtual machine software that i could use to run XP inside WinMe. I know it'll be slow, but it's gonna be for testing only. Do you know of a good software to run it? QEMU and Bochs are out of the question as they can't even run 95 at a half-decent speed.

 Why not use a small "Flash-drive usb stick"it's bootable with UBCD411/WinME(98SE as i prefer) and allows for more accurate setting and its own Harddrive/System enviroment for real testing <portable too :) >*cheap prices $. *Virtual machines have too many in-consistent drawbacks to real mode testing- :hello:

Coz my laptop can't boot from USB.

Maybe, just maybe, this can change that behaviour:

I'll try that, thank you. It does boot from an USB floppy drive (but my guess is that it emulates a legacy FDD, although a Linux boot disk sees it as an USB floppy indeed), but will not boot off flash drives. Haven't tried an USB CDROM, will try to get a hold of one.

I have often wondered.... couldn't a floppy disk be made to boot off the USB device? the same way that older machines use a floppy to boot the CD?

Also, why can't you make a special bootable CDROM to passoff to the USB drive? Knoppix loads off cd, and then you can tell it where to put the 'temp' files (instead of eating ram).

Do you want to run XP inside of 9x? Or simply see XP on that machine? You can use nLite (I think) to make a live XP cd... have you tried that?

Noone AFAIK managed to do it, PLOP is the only (although experimental) project that got some actual results.

An old attempt (for DOS) was left "unfinished" for lack of interest/resources:

You can (if we are talking about XP) using the "XP Kansas City shuffle" or "fake signature" method:

You joking right? :w00t:

nlite is a program to reduce XP install source, it has NOTHING to do with "Live XP cd's" (which are actually usually PE based) or with Virtual Machines.

For the record, it does exist a "real" Live XP cd, etboot:

As far as I am aware there is no virtualization software capable of running under the 9x series OSes. The codebase is simply far too different from that of the OSes derived from the NT codebase.

As already mentioned, Connectix Virtual PC (Microsoft Virtual PC was bought from Connectix) up to version 5.1 ran under win9x Operating Systems, though version 4.0 was said to be the last one really working OK under 9x:

huh... that's interesting to know...

hmmm... I'm going to have to read that one... again. interesting, nonetheless....

I wonder if a network boot could be utilized to pass-off control to a local USB drive... the network drive stays connected, but the machine won't crash if the network boot drive is removed after bootup... just thinking... but it *is* off topic....

You joking right? :w00t:

Aight... I give... I goofed... but re-reading it... I know what I was trying to say...

you can use nLite to make a smaller, slimmer, more 98-pc friendly version of the install (not to mention, it is the easiest way I know of to manipulate XP install media.) THEN use PE Builder to compile it into a live CD. Methinks it may be possible to exploit nLite's ability to patch the installer to modify the usb drivers for this purpose... I mean, couldn't you just tell XP to forget USB exists?? Use a boot-time loader to enable 'legacy usb'... I don't know any specifics, but it may be possible using this approach...

just seems like if you could get the actual booted OS to forget about USB entirely, the 'real-mode' drivers should be able to still communicate... just load them before the OS...

also, if the machine you are trying to find a vm for is somewhat current... why not reverse it? boot XP natively (or 2k) and run 98 in a window?

THYDREAMWALKER- can you elaborate? I never looked into UBCD having that feature....? sounds like it would be a solution for me possibly.... :)

Only problem is that i don't have a CD-ROM drive either, a second battery is in place of that. But to answer the question, yes, i want XP inside 98. I'll try that old Virtual PC you mentioned... However i think i'll need a bigger HDD first, i have only 2GB free of 30GB, and i need most of the stuff that's on it.
