PC_LOAD_LETTER Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 that case looks like its solid (at least the metal parts) but I vote no on on the 80mm fan the 120s provide much better airflow at lower rpms and are therefore quieter.that case also uses the noiser plastic drive rails that usually rattle instead of isolating the noise.as for the board, i cant fault it on anything other that the brand name. many people will tell you gigabyte makes awesome boards. I have never owned one of their good ones apparently im sort of an Asus person (will use Abit too if needed)this one is comparable in price/features to yours:http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...anufacture=ASUSEdit: also for video cards EVGA has a step up program that allows you to swap out you card for a higher model if you need to in the first 90 days. just something to consider.
Oziyn Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 thanks alot geek ive decided to use that mobo because of its oc features and amazing 5 star reviews.once again, THX!as for the video thing u said. you mean to say that if i buy an EVGA video card they'll let me send it in for a better one?
CoffeeFiend Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) as for the board, i cant fault it on anything other that the brand name. many people will tell you gigabyte makes awesome boards. I love my DS3R, but the main reason to get it is the ICH9R (RAID), which he's not going to do seemingly, so it's kind of pointless. The DS3L is basically the same as the DS3R, but without the ICH9R (no RAID).But, the DS3R has 8 SATA ports and RAID (P5K only has 4, uses ICH9 non-R), and better outputs at the back i.e. a toslink (not just a spdif out) and 7.1+2 audio instead of 7.1 thanks to a somewhat nicer realtek codec, both ps/2 ports, a non-jmicron controller (no a big fan of them myself), 2 eSATA outs instead of 1 (on a bracket though, but it has a nice power plug too as a bonus, and comes with a cable), 2 extra USB ports at the back (same 12 total), has a dual bios, etc. Great overclocker too. The one thing the P5K has that the DS3R doesn't, is a firewire port that most people don't use. (mine is the GA-P35-DS3R not the GA-EP35-DS3R, main difference seems to be I have my beloved serial/parallel ports, and this one has 2 extra USB at the back that I don't need) So that P5K is more like the cheaper DS3L really. There are some very nice Asus boards, but they were out of my price range (and with the P5K, I'd have needed an extra Sil3114 controller, and a parallel/serial card too, that's like 60$ extra there, and 2 slots taken) Edited June 14, 2008 by crahak

puntoMX Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Ok guys. Say you had 1200 dolllars to build a new computer, what would you buy?Im interested to see what you can make with 1200 dollars because i think i just got a job and ive done some math and il be able to spend 1200 on a computer.POST POST POST!!My current revolving Newegg wishlist PC:https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...FFXI+and+beyondGood list, except for that Intel board in combination with the Zalman cooler.I didn´t read the whole topic but if you overclock than leave that Intel board and get yourself a Gigabyte as crahak stated, that would give you all solid caps and a lot of tweak options. If it´s above your budget then leave the Zalman and take a look at the Coolermaster TX2 cooler, cheap and good performance with not much noise.
CoffeeFiend Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Good list for some perhaps It very much depends on what ones does with their PC. For me, a GeForce 8800 is just a unnecessary power hog, and only 500GB (non-RAID too) truly doesn't cut it.But overall, yes, nice quality parts (not a big fan of that motherboard either, like puntoMX)@Thunderbolt 2864: why on earth? I can't think of a reason to go AMD at this point... e8400 or q6600 are far better picks IMO. They beat the Phenom X4 9550 on every single bench, and they're basically the same price. Like some articles say: "We don’t see why someone would by a Phenom CPU while you can buy a faster CPU from Intel for absolutely the same price. (...) The reviewed Phenom CPU’s will only be good products if AMD lowers their prices severely."Core 2 Duo/Quads perform great, they're very well priced, and they overclock like crazy, and there's lots of nice boards at decent prices. I just can't think of a reason to buy AMD at this point other than to keep them in business...Besides, why a board with onboard video, if you plan on buying a video card anyways?
Thunderbolt 2864 Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Well, I finally got my new computer parts today, I was fed up of waiting for my AMD GA-M750SLI-DS4 motherboard to arrive so I decided to switch to Intel. Here are my new specs:XFX NForce 780i motherboard - It was the only good SLI motherboard I could get, would have got a 750i instead but apparently Australian stores don't have them in stock... WTF4GB DDR2 6500 800Mhz Cosair RAM - I wanted the 8500/1066Mhz but the motherboard I'm using doesn't support itIntel Duo Core 2 E8500 at 3.16 Mhz - Wanted to get a E8400 but they ran of out stockCoolermaster Centurion VCosted me like almost $1000 to get these high end hardware. The onboard video sucks, and I plan on doing some gaming so I need a good graphics card. The 280 GTX doesn't look to good at the moment, I may as well wait for the GT200b or just get a 9800 GX2 instead.
puntoMX Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Well, I finally got my new computer parts today, I was fed up of waiting for my AMD GA-M750SLI-DS4 motherboard to arrive so I decided to switch to Intel. It seems that Gigabyte can´t handle the market at this moment. I see your problem all over the world .
puntoMX Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Sweet ASUS P5Q PRO mobo, and not too pricy either and with the latest P45 chipset, good pick I would say. What I like about that version is the DDR2 standard...
