How to add subtitles?

I want a simple and free software that allows me to add my own subtitles onto any video.I will add subtitles that are made by me.

You could make a srt file

Subtitle Workshop is good. i use it every now and then to make new subs or to edit/sync existing ones.

if you want to encode the subtitles into the video (burn-in subs) use staxrip or AVI ReComp.

Check out this YouTube video. It shows how to use AegiSub along with VirtualDub to make yourself custom subtitles on movies.
