erpdude8
To be continued……….MS is saying that my sound card has nothing to do with not getting the Vista SP1 update and I only need to wait a couple more weeks and I will receive the Vista SP1 update through Windows Automatic Updates. ……Hi, i am new here. I suspect it may have to do with more than the sound card. I cannot install the SP1 either on my Dell E520 with Vista HB. The only offending file is the Sigmatel driver, which was 6.10.0.5290 and is now 6.10.0.5515 (R173209 driver). I have downloaded the stand alone SP1 file twice and from windows update once, but when i run it the license dialog box comes up and the text goes past the margins (you cannot expand the box) and you cannot scroll sideways, nor is there any "I Agree box" at the end. Changing Screen resolutions do not help. The text ends with "EULAID:VistaSP1_R1.0_Upgrade_RTL_en-US." NEXT is not available to click. This happens even in Safe Mode, and with all audio drivers deleted (recycle bin) and disabled in the BIOS. And even after disconnecting the drive with XP on it (dual boot). I cannot remove the sound card as it is part of the mobo. I have no other offending drivers according to the MS list, or strange hardware, and all other available needed updates from Dell or MS are installed. The free MS support did suggest doing this:Input the following commands in the DOS Prompt window and press ENTER at the end of each line:REG ADD HKLM\COMPONENTS /V STORECORRUPTTIMESTAMP /T REG_SZ /D "0" /FREG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\CHECKSUR\CheckSUR tool for Windows Vista 32-bithttp://download.microsoft.com/download/5/0...B947821-x86.msuDouble click on the downloaded file to run the CheckSUR tool and restart the computer to check the results. If the issue persists, please help to collect the CheckSUR.log file for further research:This resulted in SP1 being offered thru Windows update, but it still cannot run past the license box. Still waiting on another reply.Dell has posted the latest Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers in its R171788.exe file, PeaceByJesus. It has version 6.10.0.5614 which I installed on my mother's Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop with pre-installed Vista Home Basic edition. Download the R171788.exe file from the Dell Support site and use it to install these drivers which should be fully compatible with WinVista SP1.Also, have you installed the KB937287 and KB938371 updates? These updates are required before installing Vista SP1. You MUST install KB937287 and KB938371 separately (not simultaneously) as they're might be potential problems with KB937287 noted in MS article 949358:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358I recommend downloading and installing KB937287 from the MS download center instead of from Windows Update:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enand then reboot the Vista machine and install KB938371 afterwards. Here's the link to get the KB938371 update from the MS download center:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enhope this helps!-erpdude Edited March 29, 2008 by erpdude8
erpdude8
Well, I tried it. C:\dell\drivers\R167846 and lost all sound and playback devices. I then re-executed C:\Cabs\D20127-001-001\Setup.exe and back to my Sigma Tel Driver Version 6.10.5405.0 Sound is back. I did send some emails to IDT which has “acquired” Sigma Tel. News is not good. Bottom line and let me quote “IDT currently does not provide end-user support or drivers for PC Audio products”. Isn’t that sweet? Read for yourself:http://idt.com/?id=3969 Ok. MS waiting for a driver update that ONLY you can provide. I’ll post when and if I get it……….best of luck to all. MS really doesn't provide drivers, it verifies and will put drivers given to them from OEMs and partners, but that is it, at this point it would see like you are waiting on gateway for those drivers (btw, gateways website = worst site in the world...)Unfortunately, the Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers at the Dell site are for Dell computers only and NOT for Gateway computers. Therefore you must obtain the Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers directly from the Gateway support site that are made specifically for Gateway machines.Truth is, Sigmatel/IDT provides audio drivers to PC manufacturers, not to end-users as clearly noted on the IDT support site which is why you will not find any audio drivers at IDT's web site.note to fizban2: MS sometimes does provide device drivers through Windows Update. Ive seen them for MP3 players, cellphones, PDAs and such but hardly ever on an internal component.on a side note, on friday i installed SP1 successfully on another FX-400 running Vista x86 using the driver i linked above that had never had any of the beta SP1s installed on it (the first one i had tried it on had an early SP1 beta and was rolled back to SP0 when i couldnt locate a hacked UXtheme for it)
PeaceByJesus
Thanks MSFN Addict for your efforts to help. i did try that R171788.exe file last week but it would not install on my E520, and the two updates KB937287 and KB938371 are installed, and it would not install prior to the KB937287 or after. I received a another email Monday from the Microsoft Windows Support Professional1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu.2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.3. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account or any user account with the Administrator privileges.NOTE: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer.Step 3: Use the System File Checker (SFC)=================================1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the Start Search bar, right-click cmd.exe and click run as administrator.2. Input the following commands and press Enter after each line.sfc /purgecachesfc /scannowNote: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow", "/Purgecache". This command will take several minutes to complete.Step 4: Windows Vista Memory Diagnostic Tool================================1. Click the Start Button, and then type "memory" (without quote marks) in the Start Search box. 2. At the top of the Results box, click Memory Diagnostics Tool.3. When the tool opens, click Restart Now and Check Problems. The computer restarts and the diagnostic program starts. Please let me know if any error is detected by the above steps. ====================Both procedures were done, although i had to run the Memory Diagnostic from the .iso as it could not run at boot (others have this problem, likely to do with dual booting). No errors were found, and SP1 still will not run.I also have tried running it with just basic services, and my XP drive unplugged, or with audio uninstalled and disabled in the bios, and SP1 is still a no go. i could reinstall Vista, as the whole c partition is recently backed up, but i am not sure that would do it. I'll wait to see what the Windows techie can suggest. Meanwhile i use XP most of the time, as i find it faster. Thanks for any suggestions. Though I recommend installing KB938371 from MS Download center, NOT from Windows Update as the WU editions of KB937287 and KB938371 may have problems installing on some Vista machines. I would also run CHKDSK with the /R switch to fix errors in the hard drive. The KB938371 did install okay on the Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop I'm currently using. Most recent Dell laptop and desktop machines use the Sigmatel HD Audio Codec driver. Try un-installing your old audio driver and then install the newly updated driver. Though I would first check the Hardware ID in Device Manager; double click on the "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" in Device Manager and click on the Details tab. Select the Hardware IDs property to get the hardware ID number of your Sigmatel Audio hardware. If the hardware ID no. from your Dell E520 system matches any of the hardware IDs I've mentioned above, then the driver from the R171788 package should work. You may want to post here what kind of Hardware ID no. your Dell E520 machine is using for the IDT/Sigmatel HD Audio Codec. If you still have problems installing Vista SP1, I recommend getting the huge standalone Vista SP1 package here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enIt's about 435 megabytes in size and takes a while to download but this is what I'll be using to install Vista SP1. I never use the Vista SP1 "express" installer from Windows Update and never will. I prefer the full download package in case I need to re-install SP1. I haven't installed Vista SP1 yet but I'll be doing so later this April. Use a third party download manager like Getright, FlashGet or Mass Downloader [do Google or Yahoo searches for any of these download managers] to download, pause and resume partially downloaded files.UPDATE: I happen to find the IDT/SigmaTel Audio Driver version 6.10.5713.0 at this Gateway Support page:http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers...p;uid=191866337I've just tested this driver on the Dell Inspiron E1405 notebook computer and believe it or not, IT WORKS!! [Oh joy!] I also happen to find another recent IDT HD Audio driver at this Intel web site:http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...amp;PrdMap=2806This IDT* 92XX HD Audio driver for the Intel DG33TL motherboard has version 1.0.5713.6 and I also have tested this version and it installed & worked well on the Dell Inspiron laptop. Weird that IDT drastically changed the version number from 6.10.5713.x to 1.0.5713.x when getting the IDT* 92XX HD Audio driver from the Intel web site. Using this 1.0.5713.6 version, Windows Update no longer offered Vista SP1 as I've just experienced for myself. Not a problem since I've obtained the full Vista SP1 standalone pack from the MS Download Center. Edited April 3, 2008 by erpdude8
erpdude8
I checked the STWRT.INF file from the IDT/Sigmatel HD Audio v6.10.5713.0 driver obtained from the Gateway support site and it had some of the following Hardware IDs:HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111DHDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384(I won't list all of the hardware IDs from this STWRT.INF file because they're so many that it'll take up a lot of space here in this forum)I think the reason why the v6.10.5609 and v6.10.5614 drivers from the Dell site cannot install under other Dell machines like the Dell E520 is it may be using hardware id beginning with "VEN_111D"Build 5609 and 5614 of the drivers seem to support only most of the devices that have the Hardware ID beginning with "VEN_8384"But build 5713 seem to support a lot of devices with many different hardware IDs than ones found in builds 5614 and 5609.So PeaceByJesus may want to download the D20253-001-001.exe file from the Gateway support site and try the build 5713 drivers on his Dell Dimension pc. Remember that the existing IDT/Sigmatel HD audio drivers MUST be un-installed before installing the newer drivers [do NOT use the Update Driver button from device manager to install the newer audio drivers since they may not update the drivers properly]. Go to the "Programs and Features" control panel applet, click on the Sigmatel Audio (or IDT Audio) and choose the Un-install option to completely remove the drivers and its programs. Then use the D20253-001-001.exe file to extract the build 5713 drivers and run its setup program to install the new drivers. And if people here still have problems obtaining or installing Vista Service Pack 1 from the Windows Update site, consider downloading and installing the full Vista SP1 standalone package from the Microsoft Download Center link I provided in my previous post. Sometimes fixing the errors with CHKDSK and then defragging all your hard disk drives should make the installation of Vista SP1 work as expected. erpdude8
I recently happen to find slightly newer drivers than the Gateway site. The AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS.exe file from the Intel site has Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers version 6.10.5713.1. However, when I installed these drivers, the sound hardware stopped working. Turns out there are some hardware IDs missing from the STWRT.INI & STWRT64.INI files (NOT the INF files) from the 5713.1 driver package, even though those "missing" hwids are included in the STWRT.INF & STWRT64.INF files. This is the hardware ID the sigmatel/idt audio device uses on the Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop:HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801D8Even though HardwareID "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690" IS on the list in STWRT.INF/STWRT64.INF, it was NOT listed in STWRT.INI/STWRT64.INI. No problem. I can overcome this obstacle by editing the STWRT.INI or STWRT64.INI file (from the 5713.1 driver package) and add the missing hwids on there. I would also need to add references to other INI files, (for the specific hardware ID I'm using, I needed the WRT_M2-1.INI file from the build 5614 driver package from Dell). So in the INI files in the [Models] section, I needed to add the following in STWRT.INI or STWRT64.INI:HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801D8=WRT_M2-1.INIHDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690=WRT_M2-1.INIThen save changes to either STWRT.INI or STWRT64.INI. I would also need to copy the other INI files like WRT_M2-1.INI to the folder where I extracted build 5713.1 of the IDT audio drivers [in this case, the 5713.1 of the drivers are extracted to the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\WDM\ folder] . Now when I run the IDT Audio setup program from the WDM folder, it will use the modified STWRT.INI or STWRT64.INI file and the WRT_M2-1.INI file to correctly install the audio drivers AND correctly configure the audio hardware. And VOILA, I finally got v6.10.5713.1 of the Sigmatel/IDT HD audio drivers from the Intel audio package to work on my mom's Dell Inspiron laptop. So in short, if you want to try out v6.10.5713.0 of the Sigmatel/IDT audio drivers from Gateway or the v6.10.5713.1 of the audio drivers from Intel, extract the driver files first to a temporary folder, do NOT install them right away, make some changes to either STWRT.INI or STWRT64.INI (or both) by adding the missing hardware IDs that your audio hardware uses, copy the other INI file (such as WRT_D8-2.INI for Dell Dimension E520 or WRT_M2-1.INI for Dell Inspiron E1405, or whatever INI file used to configure your audio device) to the folder where you extracted and finally run the Sigmatel/IDT Audio setup program to make it detect your audio device, install the drivers and correctly configure your audio hardware.Hopefully the folks who are attempting to install the newer Sigmatel/IDT drivers but are unsuccessful are taking notes on this.Perhaps PeaceByJesus and lexonex may want to try this out . Just make sure to get the "Hardware ID" info of the Sigmatel/IDT Audio Device from either Device Manager or the DirectX Diagnostic Tool [DXDIAG.EXE] first, then add the specific hardware ID into the STWRT*.INI files from the 5713.x driver packages. PeaceByJesus
"Perhaps PeaceByJesus and lexonex may want to try this out . Just make sure to get the "Hardware ID" info of the Sigmatel/IDT Audio Device from either Device Manager or the DirectX Diagnostic Tool [DXDIAG.EXE] first, then add the specific hardware ID into the STWRT*.INI files from the 5713.x driver packages." Sorry to have missed 4 days, as i was doing a DVD project under XP with software (Roxio 8) that cannot run under Vista. Back to SP1, i did try a driver for Gateway recommended on Dell forums (where i was searching also), but it would not install on this PC. Maybe I could try the above procedure, but having tried uninstalling the offending Sigmatel driver on my E20, and disabling it in the bios (plus running in safe mode, or with basic services, and following the instructions from the free* MS Sp1 support), i am skeptical that altering the STWRT*.INI procedure would have any positive effect in my case. For once the offending driver is uninstalled and then disabled in the Bios, i would think that there should not be any audio driver listed that Sp1 objects to(?) I will be back under Vista tomorrow and see what it says in such a case. But good work Erpdudue8! Maybe you should work for Dell support. The latest MS reply (since 3-22) is"Hi Daniel,Thank you for your reply. From your description, I understand that you would like to order a DVD for Windows Vista Service Pack1. If I have misunderstood your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.If you have a North American address, please collect the following information for me. I will submit an order for you promptly. It is free of charge."I clarified that this would be of no value as i already have downlaoded the file twice, and ran it from WU as well, and thus the only DVD that i would request is Vista with SP1. If they will not, i may try making one, if it can be done with the Dell restore DVD. Edited April 5, 2008 by PeaceByJesus

erpdude8
Maybe I could try the above procedure, but having tried uninstalling the offending Sigmatel driver on my E20, and disabling it in the bios (plus running in safe mode, or with basic services, and following the instructions from the free* MS Sp1 support), i am skeptical that altering the STWRT*.INI procedure would have any positive effect in my case. You shouldn't be skeptical, PeaceByJesus. Altering the STWRT*.INI is a GOOD thing because the hardware ID that my hardware is using for the Dell Inspiron laptop WAS included in STWRT*.INF, but not in STWRT*.INI. I'm pretty confident in what I did. At first when I installed v6.10.5173.1 of the Audio drivers on the Dell Inspiron laptop from the Intel site, they did not work. Drivers were installed but no sound (and the speaker icon showed a red X).I needed BOTH STWRT*.INF and STWRT*.INI to list the specific hardware ID (or part of it) for the Sigmatel/IDT Audio setup program to correctly detect and configure the Audio hardware. Here's the contents of the STWRT.INI file from the v6.10.5713.1 driver package:----# hardware ID no 7690 was NOT included, so I NEEDED to edit the STWRT.INI file, and add the 7690 ID nos and the corresponding hardware config INI file (such as WRT_M2-1.INI). This is what I added to the STWRT.INI file:HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801B5=WRT_M2-1.INIHDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801D8=WRT_M2-1.INIHDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690=WRT_M2-1.INIThen I save the changes to the STWRT.INI file, extracted & copied the WRT_M2-1.INI file from the R171788.exe file to the folder where I stored the build 5713.1 drivers, and ran the IDT Audio setup program. Now the setup program correctly identified by IDT audio device, got the hwid no. from the modified STWRT.INI file AND used the WRT_M2-1.INI file to properly configure the audio device. For once the offending driver is uninstalled and then disabled in the Bios, i would think that there should not be any audio driver listed that Sp1 objects to(?) I will be back under Vista tomorrow and see what it says in such a case. But good work Erpdudue8! Maybe you should work for Dell support.perhaps the folks at Dell should read my latest posts on modifying the STWRT*.INI files to include the older hardware IDs or models of Sigmatel/IDT audio hardware AND get a hold of v6.10.5713.x of the audio drivers AND add the other INI files like the WRT_D2-1.INI, WRT_D2-2.INI, etc. from the R157052.exe file into their own audio driver package. That should get the newer drivers to work with the older Sigmatel/IDT audio hardware. v6.10.5713.0 drivers from Gateway and v6.10.5713.1 drivers from Intel are almost "generic". build 5609 and 5614 of the audio drivers from Dell are less flexible and more restrictive to several recent models of audio hardware and won't work with older Sigmatel audio hardware. erpdude8
"Grrrr…"Sounds Dell-monic to me.Don't get frustrated, PeaceByJesus and lexonex! Try my tips out to get the 5713.1 drivers to work for your machines! Open Device Manager, Expand Sound, video and game controllers section, double click on Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec click on the Details tab and change "Device Description" to "Hardware IDs"Now download the AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS.exe file from the Intel web site, run the file to just extract the files to the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\ folder but do NOT run the setup.exe file. From the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\WDM\ folder, open the STWRT.INI file in Notepad and add the following lines below the [Models] section:HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618=WRT_D8-4.INIHDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD=WRT_D8-4.INISave changes to the STWRT.INI file from the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\WDM\ folder. Now get a copy of the WRT_D8-4.INI file and copy that file to the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\WDM\ folder. And finally, run the SETUP.EXE file from the \AUD_allVista_5713.1_PV_IDT_v22_IAS\ folder (not the WDM folder), and the setup program should find your audio hardware, install the drivers, find the model in the modified SWTRT.INI file AND use the WRT_D8-4.INI file to setup your hardware. That's all there is to it! And your audio hardware should be able to use the 6.10.5713.1 of the sigmatel/idt audio drivers. Edited April 9, 2008 by erpdude8
