HFSLIP Need Help Using-Need How to Manual!

Hey folks. First of all I think HFSLIP is a great tool. Been using nlite, and came across this. I like the idea of integrating the latest windows media player and IE. Along with everything else. I think though that the lack of a single source "How to" guide is really hurting this program and its ability to take the "slipstreaming/integrating" community by storm. Tomcat's website is as close as it gets to a guide, and that is appreciated.

To the author or others, put together a all in one manual/guide for HFSLIP please! :thumbup

I am trying to update Windows 2000 original release.

I have downloaded all the updates from Tomcats website and all the ones not included on that, from Microsoft. I have gone all the way back until the end date or lock in date (all the updates to that point) of the security roll up for SP4. I have in all around 138 updates, and that does not include service packs.

I want to integrate latest IE (6 for w2k) and windows media player(9 for w2k) and all the other hot fixes..

I put everything in the folders as listed on Tomcats download page. (plus the extra hot fixes from Microsoft) I then used HFSLIP, then afterwards I use nlite on those files just processed with HFSLIP to integrate drivers using nlite. I then burn a ISO. Windows starts loading but to date (about 15 tries) It doesn't work and something different happens each time. One time it worked (got windows installed) but all the windows had scripting errors. Now it hangs at the "save setting" (almost a complete install) phase of the windows 2000 setup.

I did try the HFSLIP ISO without the nlite added drivers, did the same thing as with drivers added.

I have the feeling from trying this many times and from reading various non-complete posts on "how to", that the problem lies in the integration of IE and Windows media player. I am guessing though.

I read somewhere that if trying to integrate IE6, don't have IE5 hot fixes in HF folder but I see them on Tomcats page, so I left them in figuring he knows the deal better.

I want to integrate all the drivers I need for all my systems. (Intel chipset's and Nvidia chipsets, etc.) Plus later add many of the the driver packs from "Bart the Sneaky" for a all inclusive install on anything build.

Question: Is there a complete "how to" guide? If so, where? If not, why not?

Why isn't the end product (ISO) more stable?

Do I have to integrate all the Service Packs or just SP4? (If you try integrating manually SP4 requires SP3 to be there, SP3 needs SP2 so why the change using the program?)

I did create a HFcleanup folder, and put the required file in it to help clean up the build (seemed like a good idea), IS this the problem?

Any suggestions on what to look for or how to make a ISO that is 100% guaranteed to work?

Thank You

Here is a link to the HFSLIP website. HFSLIP is pretty stable as long as the instructions are followed, it just one of those small prices to pay for not requiring dot net framework. Can you please ZIP and post your hfslip.log file so we can see what you are trying to do?

I deleted my "used" HFSLIP files, started clean from the files that I downloaded from the internet. Have to run it and see. I got rid of the HFCLEANUP folder as from what I read it is a "use at own risk" kind of thing.

I have already integrated the .net run times in my current machine (W2KSP4). Is there something wrong with that? (Aside from putting something else in the W2K OS that Microsoft update has to patch.)

Should I and how can I integrate .net run time in a build of W2k?

DO I need to integrate ALL Windows 2000 Service packs by putting them in the HF folder OR do I just put in SP4? (My w2k build is original with no SP's)

Should I integrate W2K sp4supporttools.exe ?

Should I do this?-> I am going to use the tool "HFSLIP_POST_getnewfiles_v3.zip" which I assume will increase the chances of this working, when using nlite on the files just processed by HFSLIP. (Do I really need to use this if I am going to use nlite after HFSLIP? )

Thank you, sorry for the Noob questions! :hello:

Use W2K and nlite on an HFSLIPped source myself, ever since.

So I know, at least a little bit, what I´m talking about.

Let´s start from scratch.

Enable JScript, go back to Tomcat76´es Site and read it again.

Especially the link "the instructions" !

You will find :

It is not possible to slipstream SP1, SP2 or SP3 for Windows 2000 into any version of Windows 2000. These Service Packs are unsupported by Microsoft, and Service Pack 4 does not come with the "problems" that some people have with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP so there's no need to go through the extra trouble of supporting an earlier Service Pack for Windows 2000 in HFSLIP.

So you just need SP4 ! ;)

Now check the appropriate boxes and ONLY download the shown files + the recommended ones.

Put them in the correct folders and you should be good to go.

If you plan to run nlite afterwards, you need "HFSLIP_POST_getnewfiles_v3.zip", but you don´t need all the isocreating stuff, because nlite will do that for you.

There are several options to get .NET into W2K, the easiest is Tomcat76´es Silent.NetMaker, but I don´t know about the actual status of this program.

You have to have .NET2 installed, if you want to use nlite.

Should I integrate W2K sp4supporttools.exe ?

If it´s not explicitely mentioned, No !

Just the reg.exe, if required.

But you can keep the supportfolder, because there is lots of usefull stuff in there. ;)

e.g. the mslayer.exe for the compatibility mode, but this folder won´t get updated, so you have to download the actual files via MS.

Hope, it helped.

Agi

P.S.:

(My W2K build is original with no SP's)

Wish, I had one of these (mine has SP1 in it).

Found one on ebay once, but it came to over 60$, just for the CD !

I have downloaded all the updates from Tomcats website
Nice...
and all the ones not included on that, from Microsoft. I have gone all the way back until the end date or lock in date (all the updates to that point) of the security roll up for SP4. I have in all around 138 updates, and that does not include service packs.
Not so nice. My hotfix list shows you what is needed to keep Windows Update happy (apart from .NET Framework). Any other hotfixes you include MAY be supported, but they are usually superseded by the ones that are displayed on my list. General rule: if you come across an older security hotfix that doesn't appear on my list, it's been replaced by one or more of those that do appear. My suggestion (to anyone) is to use only the hotfixes on my list and test with that. If everything works properly, you can try to experiment with non-security updates that Microsoft doesn't show on Windows Update.

Also important is that some hotfixes require special handling. This is then hardcoded into HFSLIP but it's gradually removed as hotfixes become replaced by newer ones. For example, the non-English versions of the KB896358 update contain two binaries (itss.dll and itircl.dll) which have an older creation date than those in the Rollup Update, yet they are newer; when HFSLIP is processing that hotfix and the source language is not English, itss.dll and itircl.dll from the Rollup (which was processed a little earlier) are removed. Now, if ever a hotfix is released that replaces KB896358, the special workaround that was needed for KB896358 will be removed over time.

I read somewhere that if trying to integrate IE6, don't have IE5 hot fixes in HF folder
That is correct.
but I see them on Tomcats page, so I left them in figuring he knows the deal better.
My hotfix list doesn't show the IE5 updates anymore when you mark the checkbox for IE6. Likewise, the update for DirectX 7 is removed when you mark the checkbox for DirectX 9. As noted on that web page, you are supposed to mark/unmark checkboxes, and THEN look at the lists below.
Do I have to integrate all the Service Packs or just SP4?
You only HAVE to have SP4. Whether your source was patched with a previous Service Pack beforehand won't make a difference (except maybe more clutter).
If you try integrating manually SP4 requires SP3 to be there, SP3 needs SP2
I don't know where you got that information from but it's inaccurate. Each Windows Service Pack is cumulative.

No, there's nothing wrong with that. TommyP only said that it's not a requirement.
Should I and how can I integrate .net run time in a build of W2k?
That's up to you. I include a silent installer for .NET 1.1 in the HFSVCPACK folder in my builds because it's the minimum required for the latest releases of SoundForge.
DO I need to integrate ALL Windows 2000 Service packs by putting them in the HF folder OR do I just put in SP4? (My w2k build is original with no SP's)
You only need SP4; it's cumulative.
Should I integrate W2K sp4supporttools.exe ?
HFSLIP doesn't support it, but I recently made an HFSLIP "plug-in" for the Windows XP support tools so I'll make one for this too.
Should I do this?-> I am going to use the tool "HFSLIP_POST_getnewfiles_v3.zip" which I assume will increase the chances of this working, when using nlite on the files just processed by HFSLIP. (Do I really need to use this if I am going to use nlite after HFSLIP? )
It is advised, yes, because nLite (or another slipstreaming tool) may remove binaries slipstreamed by HFSLIP.

Thank You to all who answered.

Regarding the NEWBIN.TXT file that was created: When using Nlite to integrate the files, I found the "save box". How do I get the file names contained in the NEWBIN.TXT list, into the save box list? (Do I have to type in ever single one by hand?)

I assume that I need clean W2K files (right from the cd or a clean copy of them) for the HFSLIP source folder and not files already processed with nlite?

Thanks again

Side Note: I may be moving to Germany, which is I take it in Tomcats area. (Closer than in USA in any case.)

Simply open the txt file in an editor or notepad, select all, copy and paste. :)

msconfig is in the list by default, so check, if it won´t be double.

P.S.:

Welcome to Europe !

I tried to cut and paste list but nlite would not let me. odd.

Still Answer this if you know how! -> Also is there anyway to get the Windows XP setup tool / format tool and put it in W2K? That way a quick format can be done at setup in W2K!

Really I want to be able to upgrade my W2K Pro until it is XP Pro so I won't have to buy Win XP Pro so I can use SLI or other features on my motherboard! :P

Update: I got the ISO made and burned. DirX9, IE6, WMP9, and a lot of misc hot fixes installed. Installed perfect, Windows update worked perfect, and there were only five updates to down load. (not including .net) My girlfriend doesn't understand but I am happy! :thumbup

Thank You

Just as an aside, I will be editing the instructions on my site soon.

TC's content is meant to get users up to speed without having to slog through 100 pages of text. My guide is a bit more "mind numbingly comprehensive" as one guy on mp3car forums once put it.

I can add some of these questions to my instructions' coverage when I edit it. Which I do plan to do... once I finish the house... (and here I'm jealous of Tommyp who never had to plaster any of his walls :P )

That's correct. HFSLIP can only work with a clean source (you may patch it with Service Pack 4 beforehand if you like).
Also is there anyway to get the Windows XP setup tool / format tool and put it in W2K? That way a quick format can be done at setup in W2K!
Not to my knowledge. I think people have asked for this for years.
Really I want to be able to upgrade my W2K Pro until it is XP Pro so I won't have to buy Win XP Pro so I can use SLI or other features on my motherboard! :P
If you're a gamer you're still better off with Windows XP. The 3D acceleration was greatly improved with SP4 but it's still lacking compared to Windows XP.
Windows update worked perfect, and there were only five updates to down load. (not including .net)
Which ones?

fdv, i actually found the instructions on your site instructions pretty helpful. That's how I stopped using nlite for integration and moved to HFSLIP instead. of course i still use nlite to lighten things up a bit ;)

so FWIW, thanks! :thumbup

Tomcat, you had asked which hot fixes were detected by Windows update to be needed after I patched with all the patches you provide links to plus the ones I got off Microsoft? Here they are: KB939653, KB936782, KB938127, KB918439, and KB904706. The funny thing is that two of those files are Internet Explorer files for IE5 that per our discussion are not needed when slipstreaming IE6 into the build.

I guess for some reason Windows just has to have them.

The others I cannot figure it out as I have them included in the build I did.

The only other thing is 3-4 patches for .net packs after they are installed.

All in all a very good difference though which makes me happy.

I will upgrade to XP Pro sometime soon. Does anyone know if those darn Dell OEM CD's work? I guess if they have the Microsoft COA Hologram I can't go wrong.

I would get Vista so I can have DX10 but not sure of the stability of Vista yet. Plus which version to get anyway, since there are so many. I guess if there is a 32 bit gamer version that would be the one to have. 64 bit would be nice but that for now actually runs games worse. Not to mention the driver issue and from what I read the way the 64 bit OS runs the 32 bit applications stinks. (Not a programmer so I can only take their, Review websites, word for it.

I can't help much without an HFSLIP.LOG file. You are clearly doing things wrong there because most hotfixes you mention come in two versions and you need the right ones.

KB939653

When slipstreaming IE6, you only need IE6.0sp1-KB939653-Windows2000-x86-ENU.exe.

When not slipstreaming IE6, you only need IE5.01sp4-KB939653-Windows2000sp4-x86-ENU.exe.

KB936782

When slipstreaming WMP9, you only need WindowsMedia9-KB936782-x86-ENU.exe.

When not slipstreaming WMP9, you don't include any KB936782 hotfix.

KB938127

When slipstreaming IE6, you only need IE6.0sp1-KB938127-Windows2000-x86-ENU.exe.

When not slipstreaming IE6, you only need IE5.01sp4-KB938127-Windows2000sp4-x86-ENU.exe.

KB918439

When slipstreaming aolsupp.exe AND IE6, you only need IE6.0sp1-KB918439-Windows-2000-XP-x86-ENU.exe.

When slipstreaming aolsupp.exe and NOT IE6, you only need IE5.01sp4-KB918439-Windows2000sp4-x86-ENU.exe.

When not slipstreaming aolsupp.exe, you don't include any KB918439 hotfix.

KB904706

When slipstreaming the DirectX9 core, you only need Windows2000-KB904706-DX9-x86-ENU.exe.

When not slipstreaming the DirectX9 core, you only need Windows2000-KB904706-v2-x86-ENU.EXE.

This is all on my hotfix list, btw. If you mark the checkboxes for the components you wish to add (like IE6, AOL ART support, DX9 and WMP9), then the list at the bottom shows only those hotfixes you need and hides those you don't need.

I hope you don't mind my adding to this thread. It seems to be a good one! I would like to know some links to tutorials or guides on how to remove some components using HFSLIP? For example how to remove Remote Registry from even installing, or Windows Tour.

Currently I'm trying to use nLite for that purpose but it is giving me problems running it over SOURCESS and if I can I'd like to be able to do everything that nLite does from inside HFSLIP. Is there a more advanced tutorial anywhere for things like that? Same for having services preconfigured as disabled/manual etc. and for unattended settings like CD key and language prefs? Thank you!
