Some errors I found in HFSLIP

Hi, I often use HFSLIP to create updated ISOs for friends (I only update the source, I don't use cracked keys), which I test with VirtualBox to ensure they work correctly.

I found some errors with slipstreaming in various situations.

1) With HFSLIP 1.6.2, I created a fully updated ISO of Windows 2000 Professional SP4, with DirectX 9c, IE6, WMP9, MDAC 2.8 SP1, and all the hotfixes (unfortunately, I lost the log file). Slipstreaming goes on well but, during setup, it freezes at Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) configuration, and I'm unable to continue the installation. I removed all updates related to this component (Update Rollup 1 included), and the setup went fine.

2) Now, with HFSLIP 1.7.0, I'm trying to create a fully updated Windows XP Pro SP2, with DirectX 9c Nov 2007, IE7, WMP11, and all the hotfixes.

- The first error i encounter is during slipstream, with directx_nov2007_redist.exe and wmp11-windowsxp-x86-it-it.exe in the HF folder: when the program tries to extract the two files, it gives me an error I can't remember very well but I think it is like "specified directory does not exist". To solve this, I extracted manually the files as I used to do before new version of HFSLIP, and the slipstream goes well.

- Just for information, I removed some components with nLite, but I don't think it is the problem, because I used to make updated CDs in the same way before this.

- The second error is just at the beginning of the setup, after the Windows XP logo: it gives me a BSOD error (the snapshot below):

STOP: c0000221 [incorrect image checksum]

Image gdi32.dll might be corrupted. The checksum headline doesn't coincide with calculated checksum.

So I recopied the gdi32.dl_ file from the original ISO, but then it gives the same error with imagehlp.dll.

Now I'm going to copy also imagehlp.dl_ from the ISO, but I think it will give me another error with another file. Can it be a hotfix not correctly slipstreamed?

You should remove all of the non-supported DX9 files that you manually extracted into your HFCABS folder (e.g. x64, DLLs/EXEs, and since you're slipstreaming XPSP2, the CABs that don't start with a date in their names).

I don't know of a hotfix that updates imagehlp.dll.

For starters, I would remove the ampersand in the name of your HFSLIP folder because it is causing trouble. It has a specific function in DOS. From the Basic How-to page on the HFSLIP site:

"It is advised, for best results, that your HFSLIP folder path does not contain spaces or any exotic characters; for example: D:\HFSLIP."

You can use underscores if you like; I use them too.

Second, remove all the updates that don't appear on my XPSP2 hotfix list for HFSLIP. You should first try to get a working system with what HFSLIP was designed for. You can experiment later.

Concerning what Super-Magician wrote... It isn't important anymore since HFSLIP 1.7.0, but if you dumped all DX9-related CAB files in the HFCABS folder using previous versions of HFSLIP (such as 1.6.2) you will definitely get a broken build.

Anyway, I tried with a simpler folder name (HFSLIP) and the two DirectX Redist and WMP11 went fine!

Changed the folder name, followed the update list, and retried.

The first problem is solved but i still get the gdi32.dll checksum error... Can it be related to KB938829?

Anyway, up to now I'm not able to try anymore... Slipstream hangs up after recompression of DRIVER.CAB (option A), and if I close and go to the SOURCESS folder, I get a 900 MB CD with uncompressed DRIVER folder in I386...

Just a small advice of which I don't know if it will help you, but I advice you to change it anyway Change your HFSLIP path from D:\Downloads\Altro\Immagini cd-dvd\XP A&O 04-11-2007\ to D:\HFSLIP, so that directory names can't be too long and so that special characters such as & are not in the foldernames.

Unfortunately, in a moment of rage, I deleted everything.

I retried just yesterday, following your list without KB938829 (which contained gdi32.dll) and skipping the nLite process.

Still gettint that checksum error at imagehlp.dll... So it is not an nLite error, nor any of the 82 hotfixes I excluded.

What can it be?

Now I just tried with 1.7.1rc1... Still the same problem.

But now I followed the slipstreaming process, and I see that no imagehlp.dll is processed!

So it isn't any of the hotfixes

Logfile is just the same as the last one, except for the HFSLIP version.

To check, I also tried with another ISO maker instead of nLite's integrated one, I used ImgBurn.

This one doesn't even manage to make the ISO : I get an error during image build saying: "cannot read from file D:\HFSLIP\SOURCESS\I386\ASMS\70\msft\windows\mswincrt\MSWCRT.DLL , reason: end of file" and the process is stopped.

I tried then with CDBurner XP 4, the image is created, but it doesn't boot in DOS (this is a error of mine... I didn't make a bootable CD, because I was afraid to break something else).

This is a very weird problem, don't you think?

Are you sure that your hard drive isn't corrupted?

My thought too. If no newer version is slipstreamed, it's either a corrupt source, a corrupt file structure on your hard drive or even a bad drive.

Run chkdsk X: /r on the drive that holds your HFSLIP folder (X: should be replaced with the correct drive letter). Then remove the SOURCE folder and copy it from CD again.

Ok, I tried with a new fresh source, and the setup problems seem to be gone.

However, I see sone problems in the final Windows.

I slipstreamed IE7 and WMP11 but, when I click on "Internet Explorer" on the desktop, it shows me a window which crashes immediately. For WMP11, I can't find any link to launch it.

I go and check in the "Program Files" folder, and the two folders "Internet Explorer" and "Windows Media Player" seem to be half empty.

I had almost everything in the "Windows Media Player" folder, except from the main .exe. I manage to make it work by clicking on a skin file (skins\revert.wmz): it opened the configuration wizard and, at the end, the wmplayer.exe appeared from nowhere and the program opened!!

Anyway, this is my startmenu, almost empty (I integrated Microsoft Update, shouldn't appear a link?):

And this is the desktop, with the Internet Explorer icon not working (BTW, it has the IE6 icon, although I integrated IE7):

I almost managed to make it work please help!

If you're interested, I used nLite to tweak and reduce the ISO.

EDIT: I just tried one thing, I showed hidden and system files and the IEXPLORE.EXE appeared in the "Internet Explorer" folder. However, it doesn't start either.

If I were you, I would see if the problem lies with hfslip or nlite or a combination of both. So in simpler terms, run hfslip and test via VM to see if you can repeat this error. Then run nlite on the sourcess folder and see if you can repeat the error.

That looks like the post install wizard didn't run (the one where you set the firewall, register with MS, etc).

As TommyP suggested, do a test without nLite. Create an ISO from the SOURCESS folder and install that. If the problem remains, remove all updates which do not appear on either they_guy's or my Windows XP SP2 hotfix list and try again (without nLite).
