  1. Please try a real host, like http://uploaded.to/ or something. Maybe that way I could download it too. Thank you. [EDIT] Sorry, my IE seems to be FUBAR - I can't seem to download from that host either, although it used to work. Something is really FU here, and I need to fix it a.s.a.p. But I really dunno what to do first, it's driving me crazy.
  2. To be honest, I never used any firewall or resident antivirus on my 98SE system, and I'm still alive and kickin'. No router or any other fancy stuff. The only protection I've ever used was Ad-Aware (1.06 R1 being the latest usable on Win9x) and Spyware Blaster, combined with occasional scans from Trend Micro's Sysclean Package (requires the pattern signature package), only when I suspected something fishy.
  3. I wasn't only referring to KernelEx, but to other system upgrades, such as RichEdit, gdi.exe/gdi32.dll, user.exe/user32.dll, msvcp71.dll/msvcr71.dll (VC2003 runtime), msvcp80.dll/msvcr80.dll (VC2005 runtime that needs installation; doesn't work by only copying those 2 dlls to the %system% folder) and similar. Heck, some applications may not work (correctly) even if gdiplus.dll is missing. Not to mention others that depend on unicows.dll...
  4. Dunno if I'll find the time to add useful apps to the list, however I'd like to mention that there are certain applications that do not work (at all, or work with limitations/errors/crashes/etc.) on a vanilla Win98SE, but they do work after system upgrades, provided by (un)official patches/packages; most important of them being KernelEx, which for example, allows me to run KMPlayer (which would otherwise throw a C++ error message box) and allows the use of Media library in QMP beta119. Considering this, it may be a good idea to compile a list of applications and their versions that would run on such a fully patched system, together with the required upgrades for each of them. That would be hard work, I know, but it has already been requested so many times in the KernelEx thread and I thought it might be the right time to start building such information now. OK, to contribute a little to this thread, I'll add a few apps that I use and think are noteworthy: - ONGD - SHAR - Total Commander --> http://www.ghisler.com - ONGD - FREE - SlimBrowser --> http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/ - LAST - FREE - JWPce 1.50 --> http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html - ONGD - FREE/$$$$ - BSPlayer 2.x (Pro) --> http://www.bsplayer.com/en/bs.player/home/
  5. Could someone repost the English package to a decent host that I can actually download from? I've had enough posting and reposting that that stupid RapidShare has something that always tells me I'm already downloading from my IP although I'm NOT. Thank you. Nevermind, I had a friend download it for me. Thanks anyway. (later edit) Thank you for the link below.
  6. @ bristols: which version of usp10.dll do you have installed? I have 1.0471.4030.0, together with riched20.dll 5.30.23.1221 (I know about .1228 but dont' have it around) - the other richedit versions don't work correctly with SpellChecker in Miranda - and I have no such problem. Also, please specify which messaging plug-in you're using (SRMM, Scriver, tabSRMM, nConvers), and if that error comes up with any of the aforementioned (switch them in Options > Plugins, if you got them installed; make sure you install the appropriate, compatible versions).
  7. Normally I'd agree, but personally I had some experience with a friend's system that I enhanced with 98SE2ME and the shutdown sequence is a bit confusing, because the machine is AT not ATX, hence it does not shutdown automatically. I had performed a few tweaks on that system, including deleting temporary files and such on shutdown, which creates certain HDD activity and when the logos are missing, the user is uncertain as to how long should they wait until pressing the Power button to actually shutdown the machine. I believe this is one situation when those logos (or at least logos.sys, the last one) do prove to be useful. Maybe anonymous or somebody else could tweak those system files to at least allow logos.sys to be displayed on shutdown.
  8. Dunno about you guys, but I have a Flash version of 9.0.74 (not from Auto-Patcher) and the Toyota site opens up fine, with no errors, redirections or whatever. I'm using SlimBrowser 4.10.015 (latest build AFAIK), which is based on IE.
  9. Have you tried MDGx' mirror link in post #465 above?
  10. Limited tests on my Win98SE quickly revealed two major issues, that weren't present in previous builds: - 100% CPU usage all the time - quicklaunch icons were all shifted to a clickable menu, while their original taskbar space was empty and not skinned, except for incidental bitmap overlaps. Systray icons still hidden, still crashes on exit. I reapplied the BoostMauve theme, as some elements were not skinned anymore due to changes between versions. No start menu skinning, no advanced skinning like halos, etc. Currently I'm sick, can't test more thoroughly, sorry.
  11. Scanreg automatic registry backup has saved my a$$ a few times. It's not set to backup system files, but common-sense always told me to back the files up manually, at least. I created the folder C:\Backup and I toss in there any current system files that would be upgraded/replaced by a hotfix or whatever, so in case of a failure I'd easily be able to restore them in DOS mode. Scanreg.ini configuration on my machine is as follows: ;Registry backup is skipped altogether if this is set to 0 Backup=1 ;Registry automatic optimization is skipped if this is set to 0 Optimize=1 ScanregVersion=0.0001 MaxBackupCopies=5 ;Backup directory where the cabs are stored is ; <windir>\sysbckup by default. Value below overrides it. ; It must be a full path. ex. c:\tmp\backup ; BackupDirectory= ; Additional system files to backup into cab as follows: ; Filenames are separated by ',' ; dir code can be: ; 10 : windir (ex. c:\windows) ; 11 : system dir (ex. c:\windows\system) ; 30 : boot dir (ex. c:\) ; 31 : boot host dir (ex. c:\) ; ;Files=[dir code,]file1,file2,file3 ;Files=[dir code,]file1,file2,file3
  12. Dunno what your problem is, but I just installed it (twice: installed, uninstalled while trying to fix some unrelated problem and reinstalled) recently and I had/have absolutely no such issues. Well, there may be problems with resources dropping quite fast, but that's something else and could be caused by any other factors as well, such as gdi.exe/gdi32.dll (updated to 4.90.3003). Please check any possible resident/BIOS anti-virus or other applications that may block operations on system files. Or maybe some strange boot-up configuraton... You may ask MDGx to create a debug version that'd create a log of the operations performed during install, so you could find where (and possibly why) it breaks.
  13. To be honest, the skinning feature kept me hooked to this project. I haven't had a look at the skin files, but if that's true, then I see little point to fighting for it to work under 9x. For most users, creating own skins instead of comfortably importing already existing ones would just be a turn-off. Tihiy's Revolution Pack already does skinning - and in a more advanced way - and Stoic Joker's version of TClock works fine without crashing on exit, at least on my machine. At this point, I dunno what to say... Let's hear other opinions.
  14. Ah, I'm not a specialist either - just catching some things on the fly. As far as I understand, that parameter is used to force installation even over an existing higher build number of a file. It should be used - at least theoretically - only when certain files strictly depend on other certain versions and mismatching would lead to unpredictable results.
  15. To be honest, I can't remember where I got that usp10.dll version from. I don't quite keep an evidence on sources; all I'm interested in is the final result. Here's the full info on it: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\usp10.dll on Microsoft Windows 98 SE version 4.10 File Version Information : Version language : English (United States) CompanyName : Microsoft Corporation FileDescription : Uniscribe Unicode script processor FileVersion : 1.0471.4030.0 (main.030626-1414) InternalName : Uniscribe LegalCopyright : © Microsoft Corporation. Frankly, I'd rather use one of the 5.50 versions - because of the link color fix - but those seem to have some issues of their own. This has been discussed at large some time ago.
  16. Let's hope those changes will be of help. Anyway, I was just thinking of you having Win98 installed under a virtual machine, as many other developers do.
  17. Don't mean to push, but I'm also waiting for some fixes regarding Win9x issues, especially the exit crash in Explorer. I sincerely hope it will be taken care of, as it'd be sad to drop support for 9x as many others do nowadays (see Winamp 5.5 beta). I'm willing to test and post Dr.Watson crash reports, if helpful.
  18. I see the inf has the infamous ,,,4 parameter for the included files. Incidentally I have (better said, had) USP10.dll v1.0471.4030.0 installed prior to this upgrade and I had noticed no visible issues. After the upgrade I forcibly got the lower-versioned file. Question: is this version matching required? Otherwise, why is the ,,,4 parameter used for all files in the package? Also, as reported some time ago in some other thread around, this version of riched20.dll has issues with bad words underlining in Miranda IM's spellchecker (based on Hunspell), reason why I had been using riched20.dll v5.30.23.1221. Is there still no better version that'd be worth using instead of this one? Nevertheless, thank you very much for all your hard work!
  19. I tested that version a bit and apart from a crash when closing the options panel, it appears to be working fine on my 98SE. No crash on exit (closing the program). However, all the skinning code has been ripped appart, so it's really of no use for me. Just wanted to check it. I do have many system files updated, however, as well as KernelEx installed. If it weren't for the latter it wouldn't have worked, as the author plays the wise guy saying "Age check: OS too old". Well, in his face, I have this version running just fine on this "mathusalemic" OS - just had to add the exe to kexver.ini's Override section.
  20. The above procedure is incomplete; as soon as you start IE, it'll become default again and you'll wonder why. So here's what you should do before the above: - Go to Control Panel > Internet Options - Click the Programs tab - Uncheck "Internet Explorer should check whether it is the default browser" Only after that you may set Firefox as default browser and IE would never change that option again.
  21. Does it also scan for file length/other particular details, or only for filename? Because those files could be replaced by dummy omonimous 0-byte length files, if the latter.
  22. Provolino, try the TClock3 project. It should work much better for Win 2000 than for Win98.
  23. Please try FreeRAM XP Pro from here (freeware) and keep an eye of resource usage, see which application or service is decreasing your GDI resources.
  24. If I remember correctly, there is some DOS=single command added to config.sys and some other commands in autoexec.bat that you'd need to delete or REM out. It's been a while since I stumbled into such issues though, so I can't offer the exact solution. But as Mijzelf said above, if you could paste the contents of those two files here, we would be able to advise.
  25. I just tried the demo application, running the aforementioned script, and everything went fine, no GPF, crash or anything, on my Win98SE. However, I have installed a GDI update manually (from WinME CD-ROM) and then some other upgrade from MDGx' site, that takes both gdi32.dll and gdi.exe to 4.90.3003.
