  1. It's possible your other computers may have used another uxtheme patch first.
  2. Use the xpize 5 beta, or use the Anolis UxTheme patcher. The website clearly states that XPize 4.x does not fully support SP3.

    Resourcer 0.8.7

Here's a new release of Resourcer for you. What's new in this release? Significantly faster list view loading. It now takes fractions-of-a-second to load as opposed to a full minute in some cases. This is due to improved ListView / ImageList behaviourBut there does remain a temporal bug where the images don't show at all under certain circumstances. If you can produce the issue (you'll get an error message with a Continue and Quit button) let me know so I can solve it. [*]Batch Export mode You can now batch-export resources from all files in a directory en-masse. In future this feature will also produce a pretty web-page report as well. [*]Settings are now carried over from earlier versions [*]Check-for-Updates now works (I've fixed the anol.is domain name, see below) [*]Minor tweaks here and there [*]Still no change to Dialog box handling though, I'll fix that for version 0.9 [*]Icon subimages are now exported as PNG by default and not as new *.ico files (containing only 1 subimage) with an incorrect *.bmp extension Don't expect any further updates until after June 2nd as I'm still in my exam season until then. Oh, and anol.is is now back online after going through a lot of trouble with the Icelandic DNS people which also involved me logging a priority support request with my colocation provider at 3AM this morning. (I thought my subnet was hijacked by Ukrainians), this means that check-for-updates will now work fine. http://anolis.codeplex.com/Release/Project...ReleaseId=27633 UPDATE: Resourcer 0.8.8 is now released which fixes a serious issue relating to a race condition when loading the list view. See the new thread for more details.
  4. Bledd released his 7z icons before I released Anolis Installer. But most importantly: I haven't formaly released the tools required to make a package yet. You can get them if you know how to download and build the sources from Codeplex and can read XSD, otherwise you're best holding off until mid-June.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Right. I'll release an updated release of xpize 5 soonish (maybe next week, depending on how my examination revision schedule goes) which doesn't patch urlmon.dll. Could you rerun it and see if it makes a difference? Resourcer is my reimplementation of ResHacker (and kicks its arse too). You can't run Resourcer under BartPE or Knoppix though since it requires the .NET Framework 2.0 or later which isn't on those CDs. Don't worry about it since System Restore solved your issue.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Running System Restore should restore all of your DLL files to their original state, including urlmon, but not things like Visual Styles since they're not system files. Can you open up system32\urlmon.dll in Resourcer and tell me if the padlock icons have been reverted to their original files or not? Due to Windows File Protection in Windows XP you won't be able to replace urlmon.dll normally, you'll need to do it by booting into BartPE or Knoppix first.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

The checkboxes in the treeview on the Modify Package page have no effect in this beta. The Welcome Screen is in logonui.exe although xpize 5 doesn't overwrite it, instead it's re-saved as logonui_xpize.exe. Just open it up in Resourcer and you'll see the bitmaps to replace. I'll look into providing a *.torrent file icon, but there isn't much point since all the major clients provide their own.
  8. Microsoft only really created new icons for files they changed or rewrote in Vista. I suspect that grpconv.exe is identical to the one in XP and Windows 9x (although it is present on my x64 box for some reason). Microsoft, despite being a multi-billion dollar company, can't spend employee hours on tasks with no real benefit, especially when the files to change aren't end-user facing.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

The exception is being thrown from within urlmon.dll. This file is modified by xpize 5 to replace the old padlock icons with the new ones. It's possible this may be the cause. You'll need to grab a copy of urlmon.dll appropriate for your system (don't use the copy from your original Windows CD). I recommend creating a VM with XP SP3 then applying all the Windows Updates and copying the file over. I'll put a warning on the website in the meanwhile. Thanks for the bug report.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Hmm, that sounds serious. As hood said below, a System Restore should sort it out. In the meanwhile, can you tell us what error messages you're getting and if anything is written to TF2's startup log?
  11. The cert.ico one is nice, but I'm not sure about the grpconv one though. Whilst it's an improvement, it doesn't accurately portray its use in Windows (or rather: lack of since people stopped using Win3x program groups). A better icon for it would be in the Vista style showing the conversion from a Win 3.x-style window to a Vista start menu item (a big green arrow, maybe?). I'm tempted to replace the default icon in the file with the default exe icon since the file isn't really used in Vista...ever.
  12. Thanks for the responses. So I've got: German - MrBusty Spanish - Ricktendo Italian - Smiley89 Scandinavian - Banankrem That's Europe covered. I might need Portuguese (for the Brazilian fanbase). The Russians were the first to start warezing xpize 5 (how that's possible, I've no idea, but they've done it anyway) so I'd like a Russian translation for their sake, and I'd like to make inroads into China. I've got a friend from South Korea who speaks Chinese, but I don't know if he'd be available enough (he's currently in Chicago, doing a degree in Dentistry). There are a few other Chinese people I could ask, but I won't approach them until I've got the string tables finalised. In the meanwhile, I need to figure out how to localise the software in the first place. The WinForms framework has a nice localisation feature built-in to it, but it only works when you play by its rules, and I'm not doing that so I'll need to find another way around it.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

xpize 5 will include the black theme that was exclusive to XPize Darkside. only the THEME? not the other resources like system logon/logout, screen, etc? Sorry, yes, I meant everything. xpize 5 will include the dark wallpapers, wizard bitmaps, icons, etc. You can select which one during installation.
  14. There's a contact form on the xpize website.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Actually, "Anolis Installer" is the engine, xpize 5 is a package for it But yes, when Installer reaches 1.0 I'll petition the folks at WinCustomize and DeviantArt into making a section for it. Right now Installer is at 0.85 and still has a lot of work to put into it. The main Anolis website ( http://anol.is ) will also feature a package gallery. The software also allows people to make their own "Distributions" (that is: customized installer with the packages built-in and custom branding images) so everyone should be happy. I've also got some excellent news to announce soon about uxtheme patching

    Vize 2

I'm interested to look into the differences between Vista x64 and x86. XPx64 and XPx86 are noticably different since one's NT5.2 and the other is NT5.1. BTW, just to make it clear to everyone: when I talk of skipping Vista and moving on to 7, I mean I won't be using Vista as my own personal main OS, I'll still be making Vize 2.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

A little announcement: It's currently my exam season (I've even got exams on Saturday now) so I'll be too busy to make another release of xpize until early June. That's only 4 weeks to wait, but that release will the xpize 5 RC build and then I can move on to Vize. I'll add everything suggested so far to the list, as well as making the usual mediablitz by dinging Neowin et al. ...and for my next trick: "Sevenize". I'll be working with Long Zheng on Windows7taskforce.com to fix reported issues.

    Vize 2

The workload required for Vize is less than I originally anticipated, which is nice. Making a port of Vize to run on Anolis Installer shouldn't take more than 2 days work. It's currently my exam season, but I'll be free by early June, by then I'll be able to make Vize 2. I don't run Vista as my main OS (I only have it in a VM) and I'll be skipping straight to Windows 7, bypassing Vista) so I won't be able to test any Aero Glass features. So if anyone would like to register interest in testing Vize 2, let me know.
  20. I've been getting a fair few emails from angry children (Spanish kids mostly, it seems) written in their language complaining that they can't understand the software (wooden spoon prize for logic there; they could have at least used Babelfish). XPize 4.x had some translations done, xpize 5 will need the same. Right now I've got some string tables that need translating, nothing substantial though. It shouldn't take a native speaker more than 20 minutes or so. Later on in the year I'll have written up some tutorials and guides which will need translating too. I'll update the installer so it asks you what language to use on the start page Any takers?

    xpize 5 Beta 2

sorry for offtop but... in present days in UK people still using dial-up? unbelievable sad =( In the UK, not really (since you can get DSL for as little as £5 a month) but it's a problem elsewhere in the world. xpize has a very international userbase, and I'd hate to exclude anyone on account on their connection speed. I could release an xpize 5 "Core Blue" release which just has the blue theme and not Luna Element, Luna Blue, or MCE Black.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

XPize Darkside (made by Zedox, not XPero nor me) patches some more files not present in vanilla XPize 4.x. Seeming as Zedox has done all the hard work for me I can easily include it in xpize 5. Zedox hasn't updated XPize Darkside since 2007, I'll email him and ask him if I can include his stuff in xpize 5 (not that I'd need permission: most of the changes he made were XPero's "MCE Blue"-themed bitmaps replaced with black ones which is nothing I can't do myself right now, but it would be rendering his product obsolete I've long been planning to combine the Luna Element and Luna Blue XPize "mod" resources with the main product, but adding the black MCE theme (aka Darkside) would push up the size of the download by at least another 7MB or so. For those of you on broadband this isn't an issue, but I've got my own bandwidth bills to pay[1] and there are a people still on dial-up where an extra 7MB means another 40 minutes downloading. [1]xpize.net consumes about 70GB a month since I removed the links to mirrors (which were all broken) and self-hosted the files. There were 28,885 requests for XPize47F1.exe (XPize 4.7 Full, Release 1) in April 2009. But it only consumed about 44GB which means there were a maximum of 5,400 full downloads; this means roughly 18% of people who started a download actually finished it. I don't have any statistics on how many people completed an installation. I'm tempted to add a reporting feature to Anolis Installer where it would send a post-installation report to the author of a package whenever it was installed or if the installation was cancelled or failed. There are privacy implications (well, the user's IP address would be revealed) but there are a large number of people who instinctively click "Do not send information" regardless so I'd have to bury the option away somewhere, but then I'd get criticised for it. I'll have to choose my words wisely.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Hmm, that's a tricky one. The images for those buttons are resources 7010 and 7011 in explorer.exe and those are replaced by xpize 5 Beta 2. Can you fire up Resourcer and open up explorer.exe and tell me of the state of bitmaps 7010 and 7011? thanks
  24. There is no password on the latest beta.

    xpize 5 Beta 2

Gotcha. I'll see if I can come out with a later release this month. It won't be the final release but it'll be close.... in terms of resource-related features. Implementing I386 and Uninstallation support will be a long coding job. On the technical side, I think I'll copy XPero's approach of manually Shell()-invoking the expand and makecab executables included in Windows since there aren't any fully managed CAB libraries furthermore: why fix something that isn't broken? Implementing uninstallation may or may not be trivial, it depends. Implementing a backup procedure is easy, but I can't implement it until I know how I'll restore the system state afterwards. Nonetheless, spread the word around
