OK first of all, you said this will be for website testing. The main factor here will be what your projected server load will be. The website you put up on there, will it be accessed by many people at once, by just your computer or your lan? If you aren't going to be making this available to the entire internet to see, don't worry about getting a good server and you can just use the requirements that your software needs. If this is a server that will host a website that will be accessable from the internet, providing you aren't using a residential internet account to do so, then you should get a higher-end device. If you do have a residential internet account, shame on you.

I have a drive image for Ghost that is has 3 files, in VPC, ghost would time or give an error somewhere in the 2nd spanned file. THis was when all 3 files were put on a DVD. When I used the fshare, Ghost timed out when it couldn't find the second spanned file (although it was in the same folder). I tried WinPE in VPC because I also have a WIM of the image, but the WIM is on the hard drive and I couldn't get VM additionals to work and let me see the local folder.

If you are on a network that has more than 5 computers, you should get Windows XP Pro.

Not only must file and printer sharing be turned on for both, but also CLient for Microsoft Networks. They both need to be on the same workgroup for them to appear in My Network Places, but they should still be accessable to each other anyways. Both computers will need to be sharing a folder as well.

Since Virtual PC 2007 does not work with Win PE properly, are there any other VM software out there I can use to deploy a WIM file? I need one for testing since Ghost did not work properly in VPC.

Try right-click on the drive and choose Disconnect. It might be a network drive. EDIT: or it is a camera or other USB device.

There is no fake bluescreen. Turn your computer on and do the F8 to get the Windows Boot Menu (how you would go to safe mode). Choose the option to not reboot on failure, then when you boot up, it will show you the blue screen and not reboot.

You will need to use a switch. Or if you need to use the hub, you will have to give the Windows 2000 computer a static IP, and make a static IP on your NIC that is not on the domain. It should work that way. ALso, your hub needs to support the network speed of the 2 NICs in each machine. So if each computer has a 10/100 NIC, then the hub needs to be either 10/100 or auto-sensing with 10/100 capability. If the W2K machine has a 10/100 nic, and the hub is 10/100, but the NIC in your production box is gigabit, it isn't going to work.

I use a 256MB Memorex USB 2.0 drive that work has provided me. I use it for storing data, flashing bioses, ghosting machine, running NTFS DOS and more. It works really well by itself. It has survived many a fall. The only time I have had these die on me is because of faulty hardware on some computers.

You only need to do the F6 (typically) is if the HDC isn't supported by default or you are running in RAID or AHCI mode. The fact that your machine can get past the formatting phase indicates that there isn't a problem with that. You can try it tho if you need to. If you have another DVD-ROM drive, you can try that, it sounds like you are experiencing read errors. You can also try a different hard drive cable as well. Are you using a hard drive controller PCI card at all? ANd this Windows disc, is it a retail disc?

There is never any acceptable thing that happens randomly. Check your event viewer to see if you have any errors.

If I understand correctly you have an unattended CD. You would like to add Office to it as well, but you do not want the whole installation folder of Office to be copied to the hard disk first like with $OEM$, before starting the automatic installation. You could add a folder to your unattended CD and use RunOnceEx to install Office silently directly of your unattended CD. For a short guide on RunOnceEx, click here. Greetings, I have Virtual PC 2007 and cannot figure out how to install the Virtual PC Additions/als into it. I can install the DOS ones properly if I make it boot off a boot disk. I have tried the Action -> Install or Update Virtual Machine Additions, but it does nothing, or at least does not allow me to click on the folder icon in the status bar. I have also tried running the setup from the physical CD, or by copying it to the virtual hard drive and running it but nothing happens. What I am trying to do is run Win PE in the Virtual Machine (set as XP). The image I want to put on it is a WIM file, so a standard load won't help me. What am I doing wrong? Is this a problem with the PE?

Adding a server to PE isn't too good of an option since it turns off after 24 hours.

As I noted in another thread, I am seriously considering creating a GUI for WinPE using Macromedia Flash. I had previous experience in creating Installers with them (like DemoShield) and it would be a lot easier for me to create an app with that. The app would be an .EXE which is the embedded stand-alone player that does not require Flash or Shockwave to be installed on the computer itself. I have these questions: 1. Would there be any complications to using a Flash App? 2. Are there any additional files I require for XML parsing? 3. What is required in order to connect to a SQL or Oracle Database on a remote computer? This is as far as I thought on this so far. The main requirement is that the Flash app will need to get a configuration from a computer on the network, so that the app can be scalable and we won't have to replace the app everytime we do an update. I already know how to connect to network resources and how to make things work on the Flash side. My main questions are regarding if there is anything that needs to be loaded into WinPE in order for the flash app to work properly.

My computer at home uses a hacked out Windows XP Pro (Site License Version). By hacked out, I mean it has no service packs installed and very little Updates (save development ones like dotnet and msxml reqs) but have USB 2.0 capability. My computer at work is actually a server that I use as my primary workstation. It wasn't originally that but I shared a production box with a manager, and then that manager decided to take that computer with him when he transferred to another department. Anyways, it runs Windows Server 2003 Standard R2.

It sounds normal to me. I dunno, because unlike most modems with dial-up, ethernet shouldn't rely on processor core speed. I never have been told that it does. Otherwise, shouldn't it be called a software card then? First of all, torrents take up a lot of processor. There is usually a limit your client will get to (not an actual limit) where you will notice it is impossible to use the computer for anything else. I believe that it is dictated mostly by the amount of RAM on the computer. For example, back before I used a BT client and used a DL app, if I had 3 torrents running, I had to basically wait until they were finished before I could do anything else. The only difference in your instance is that your client is likely setting itself as a lower priority over other programs, or you have it configured to run in the background. So when you are playing a movie or game, Windows is using most of the processor for that and throttling it for the torrents. Even if you did have more than one core or CPU, you may not see any difference in performance unless all of your programs are designed to work with more than one core properly. If this is truly a concern, you may require the use of 2 computers, one for downloading and one for fun.

It is possible you have an OEM unattended CD. If they work like the ones we make here, it will prompt for the COA (serial number) if the machine's configuration or BIOS settings do not match the required information in the oemsetup.inf.

I haven't looked at HTA implementations yet but I plan on using a Flash EXE instead. XML seems to make sense since the "HTA:" line looks like a transform.

I have had this problem in multiple instances. I need to run a program, but WinPE says it cannot find it. I have had this with both physical and virtual environments. I have created a screenshot to show the error as it happened in a virtual environment. These are the steps involved: 1. Turn on Virtual PC, use physical CD-Rom drive. 2. Boot off WinPE CD. 3. use physical floppy drive. 4. try to run fshare (from VM additionals) = ERROR 5. Copy fshare.exe from floppy to ramdisk = SUCCESS 6. run fshare from ramdisk = ERROR As I noted before, I have encountered this error in physical (ie not using a VM). I have gotten this error with USB sticks, floppy disks, hard drives and the ramdisk. Everytime I copy a file from a removable disk to the ramdisk or hard drive because it won't run, it will not run from there either. Any ideas? I have posted a screenshot.

I have taken a break from working on that problem for right now. The network was recently re-organised and getting WinPE to work properly again had taken some time. We decided to stick with using Ghost for multi-partition images for now but perhaps I can look into this again in a couple weeks.
