2tb storage/backup setup
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to dino213aa's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
A pack of 100 DVD discs can store from 400 to 470 Gigabytes or so . That is like 20 dollars per pack now. Personally the idea of HD is wrong. No matter how much you try HD is not the answer. Yes for a Entertanment center it might be okay but over time the HD will age. Again the work place requires you to make backup copies of porgrams, and the music industry literially records everything to Tape, Disc, or whatever. I had to many outages already using HD alone. On the topic of storing 4gig files I just don't. You can convert files to othe forms of media. Also Mpeg on a VCD is really nice. It looks just as great if it was on DVD and can play on various player rather then the DVD player alone. I have my stuff my on CD and DVD since I can just access what I want when I want. I have dreams to acomplish and playing around with my files is not the only thng my life. Yes in the past I would download like crazy and back up since the days of AOL 4.0 . So all this hypo storage is not new to me. Even afterwards I got bored. I think I am over 2TB already stored on disc. Whenever I want to use something I will just access the discs. I still think all DVD+R is rewritable. I am not apart of any afiliation of DVD so I would not know. About Organic dye I use regualr discs and store them in papers. It cost like $3 for a pack of 200 or so Recycled Paper. All the discs seeems to work otherwise I would have to use a disc recovery tool which works 99% of the time with barely anything to the naked eye missing. Going threw disc for me is easy since I label the disc paper. leaving a simple mark on the paper is good enough so that I am able to find everything easy. No disc swapping and easy backups? yes it might look easy but the truth is that all you did was move data from one drive to another. No single computer is going to hold all the data you would ever need. I am thinking about the children and my grand children. They will not be using my HD 24/7 they will have USB sticks/spheres/Flash and to be honest Discs are much safer then a HD. The real reason I am using Discs over HD for long term storage is that I had a dream. I was using a Nail gun and for some reason I just nailed a couple threw my drive and then it just came to me. Not only is the HD a victim of easy damage but all data is in one place. This means while children could be playing frisbie with my discs. It would be worst if they would be carrying my HD and drop it. Can you image your child being ask to bring that HD from the counter only to drop it. I have dropped many discs all over the place and they might have cracked but at least they still work. If you drop a HD there is chance that is the end of your HD. Image a earth quake and your PC starts rolling around the place and keels over like a freight train. The HD might be damaged along witjh all your data. Keeping data spread is better then keeping data in one area. If it is all over then a sacrafice here and there would not matter but in one place that would be game over. Divide and conquer About pi this and i that personally that is bulltar. Data is encoded on a computer then stored on disc. All you need is to encode the data correctly and you should be able to store it on a CD. Laser Discs had RAW/Analog data written on it. Then when it was viewed via television it was more about the TV hadware. VCD/DVD will allways look good since it is encoded and the player is using codecs to play the file. Yes there was TB drives and they are around the size of regualr HD drives but a bit bigger. They costed like $4000 in most cases. If you are lucky you might be able to find one in a company pc in a yard sale. The thing is back in 95 the public was new to the whole computer thing. So you buying a 2gig for $250 is like people buying 2TB drives. Loigically if they are selling TB drives to the public they are selling higher storage mediums to companies. What I learn is to never settle for less and that while you can take the easy route. the harder route is more rewarding. This is why storing on CD is rewarding then storing data 24/7 on HD. -
2tb storage/backup setup
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to dino213aa's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
What I do is store a backup of everything on Disc may it be CD or DVD and wrap paper around the discs and keep them in a box safe in the dark that is not damp nore hot hopefully. I am really trying to keep it cheap since if I did went all out and store everything on Mostly movies and videos. I really want to convert my stored film into MPEG-1 or whatever that is readable on most VCD players and any DVD players. VCD is the final solution DVD is just overkill to be honest. Use DVD-R for storage since all DVD players will read DVD-R. DVD+R is kinda weird the fact that DVD+R claims to be erasable but why would you want to do that to a DVD when somebody out there could probably recover the data. I wish I could say to store purely on DVD but when I think about it CD is really the main storage medium even if it is costly. Still your storing RAW data I would use DVD. If you want something difrent that is rarely used try Giga discs/GD-R that store up to 1GIG or Laserdiscs. Okay like I was mentioning earlier about ram storage that is my next destination in LIVE storage. My HD a 100 GIG that I use as my download center along with any other HD from time to time will lose data. Like recently I lost the entire collection of C64 programs and N64 programs backups that I had stored but never got around to moving them. Personally I could careless since I push my drive everyday to download something new and diffrent. Personally when I had my drive full the drive had more energy problems. Right now my drive is around 10% free and there is no problems. I was thinking about the 2Terrabyte drives they had back in the late 90's but I can see the price is to much and probably is still too much. Even if you use a HD to backup stuff the problem is that HD is like a record player or the tin foil Airline flight recorders. They are all one a needle allways moving. -
I want to aviod installing a HD period. I am tired of living in the Flinstone age with a wheel that becomes loud and then nothing. I just want to have a stable storage system to download without stopping the printing press to reload. With the HD I have to give it a break even under the coolest conditions. By the time I am done using any HD I can boil a egg on the top of it or fry bacon. RAM gets hot also but is way smaller and easier to cool down. the power cable and the IDE cables literially slip out after a couple of days of downloading. On the topic of Tape. It is cleaner and cheaper and all I want is to download not watch the entire ESPN line up. I have another PC for that. I could setup 98 or Linux and just start the program and empty out on a regualy basis.

Gaming PC - which processor should I get?
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to azagahl's topic in Hardware Hangout
AMD Opeteron looks promising. If I was going to build a gaming PC I would build it to design games and emulate the current Video Games. Any One Gig Proccesor will do the job with any store brand AGP card and the standard 32KB-256MB. I am also considering upgrading my Celeron only for processing power nothing more. -
Personally I wish I could be an advisor on the development team or whatever they call them selfs and help them get a wider audience. The problem with the game it is a simulator and to be honest I feel like a loser when I play a simulator sometimes. Like growing crops, building theme parks, and playing football. I mean Simulators is really nice at what they do but simulating is war is so boring for a person who wants some fun and not another lecture about how and why we should do things. Also they took out alot of stuff which they use to train people on the base (whatever pryimids thingies). You are not really missing anything with this game but otherwise checkout still. Another game in relations to this is "Bio-Terrorism" a gba game which use a Metal Slug Game Engine. really nice but again a simulator.

Just skip the introduction if you want to* Alot of people here and eleswhere obviously download 24/7 and besides backing and making room for storage we want to get the best out of storage while not having to worry about HD damage and I myself I have been thinking about converting a computer to entirely RAM storage using 98 or mabye even NT/2000 or Linux. *What I want to do is not create a download server via CD-ROM but to be able to push those big 50Gigs download without worrying about storage space. My problem is that the computer I want to use is limited to 8GIGs of storage but instead of messing with the Bios I want install a RAM drive so if you can help me reach my goal if not yours please pont me to RAM storage device. I believe there is built in RAM PCI or even ISA and AGP readers with the storage I require that will allow me to use the Drive without worring about Bios limitations. One such product is the I-RAM which is limited to 4Gigs as with the USB Drive. I-RAM http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/gigab...m/index.x?pg=12 I also want to know about using Tape for storage. Somebody told me you can store alot more then with the Hard Drive just keep it safe. Also I was thinking of using a Tape drive that use regular recordering tape like with the VHS,CamCorder, or Beta. Besides I-RAM or tape I want to look into on board storage. My goal is to get at least 60Gigs for now. In the future I will might be using 200GIGs if I still care for downloading.

Windows 98SE on the lastest hardware
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to nicke85's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well in my use 98 will run on any computer you put it on. The thing is NT/2000/XP is only there seeing how 95/98/ME will use up too much memory after awhile and you will barely be able to do anything. In this case 98 just does not cut it when using a computer that must stay on 365 days a year. Another thing is the FAT32 system only allows up to 3.99 GIGS of data in a whole file. This means when you want to hold a RAW file in terms of Video editing there is no way possible. On that subject any program that deals with uncompressed data is a treath to the FAT32 system which needs to be replaced with FAT64or whatever that will allow a 10TerraByte file or something simular. On the topic of core proccesors this is foolery. Unless your a developer (of anything) you will have no concerns on this. In the case of core proccesors the Sega Saturn uses multiple chips to do many jobs just as any game system. A Video game uses a sepcific setup of hardware to run games this is why most games when emulated on a computer will get diffrent results with various setups of chips and proccesors. In most cases the chips are emulated. This brings us to the reason why Apple is still around. A daul proccessor setup in the case of the funny pictures shown here is no diffrent then the core setup or a multi chip setup like the Sega Saturn. In the PS2 they use two proccessors so that one will do a diffrent job. Again this is no concern to anybody seeing how only a developer or computer arcutech would really need to worry about this. In the case of media editing a multi chip support is uneeded unless the program is programed this support. However in my uses I am in College now and it is screwed up the way they are teaching people. They replace anything and everything that they can with computers and make room for other classes. Now in the case of how this retorts to 98SE on the latest hardware. In the working world people do not have a chioce. They have to use the OS or like me find other ways to make due. Like alot of people they bring there work home so they do not have to live at work however they waste constant amounts of money just to do the job. In reality they are forcing these OS and Hardware on people like the burnden of a child. Where most people are enslaved by technology. I myself just want to draw, create animation and work out but I need money so I have to run a side bussiness go to college or get a job that takes away my rights. Now I have been going so far and I feel like I am surounded by the most evil people in the world while the students are being taught stuff which could be explained in a second. Lastly they use the Apple OS in the work place and the Windows NT OS has been in the work place for years also and to be honest I admit I will have to setup a small area to use these OS and it is going to cost me money. The problem I have is that regaurdless what program works or gets the job done in 98. The program makers decide that the work can't be transfered from another program to that program or that version of the program will not run a file from another version even if you tweak the file for your computer use the 98 program, you will then have to tweak it back to make it work on the 2000/Apple and then again who will do all the tweaking. This is the real problem people not will this hardware run this but will these scumbag companies would just start making the program able to run on all OS and not hold some excuse like it will make your computer explode. I really do not see any real need for enhancement. Right now you can watch HD-DVD on your 98 machine with the HD-Drive from the X-BoX 360.....No joke all you need is the drivers and shamzzaamm your setup to make backups of your HD movies and games. Again 98SE will run fine on all hardware that is not made for a specific OS or format. 98 also has the software to do the job of the Amiga video editing to a sound room editing room and even 3d editing and compling of 3d games and other programs. 98 strength is that there is so much program support you do not need another OS for anything. Other then Internet Hosting Networking and multi tasking if own only one computer in the household. The only person who will be need Nt/2000/XP/Aple/UNix/Sun or any other OS is a editor who want to deal with files bigger then 3.99 gigs. Until this and the Memory problems is corrected they wil need something else other then 98. -
I have one of those USB Hard Drive Outlets that allows me to put in a USB Massive Storage device/USB Pen/hard Drive/Rom/ or anything that goes into the regular IDE cables like a regular drive. I just tried this Zip drive I have lying around and the computer sees the drive ( where it does the hourglsass search thingy ) but it did not install/detect the Hardware name and I do not see a drive letter. Do I have to manual assign a letter? Do I have to install a driver that will pick up the zip drive and install it. Does 98 have the zip drive drivers included? It is not a big deal I just want to try it out. I have not tried pluging it in directly into the computer seeing how I need the space at the moment. I think the last time I did that the computer just sat there like I had nothing installed or it never appeared in the Bios settings. Do I need to enable Zip drive support or something like that in order for it to appear?

I had XP installed on a computer but when the computer started up it would freeze a tthe loading screen or when is use after loading would freeze and I would have to power down. I thought it was the HD so I poped in a ME and leave the computer running with a game loading from the CD drive for a couple of days. The computer never frozed once. So I decided to turn off the computer and try another Hard Drive which I installed 98 and then I was going to install 2000. The 98 istallation went threw with no problems. Then on to the 2000 installation. Where I left the FAT32 since it is only a 4GIG. The istallation was going threw until it went to the laod screen the same XP/2000 load screen and then FROZED right after trying to configure stuff. Even after I Power Reset the 2000 installation would not get pass the load screen or even when it was about to complete installation it would just sit freeze. So now I am convinced there is something wrong with the computer and not the Hard Drive of my original XP installation. I just don't get it where the ME/98 went threw but the XP and 2000 would freeze up a few minutes after laoding windows. What kinda of problem is this and how do I slove it?

Ooohhh Okay. So now it is loading the ini file as the the original. Okay so I will try to use the one from my other Win98 HD. IT WORK ED IT WORKED. Thank alot.

Windows 95 - Sharing a printer
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to BenoitRen's topic in Windows 9x/ME
You need to setup your computer on a network. Look up Internet connection sharing. The first thing you need to do is setup a network on one computer and then setup for another. The idea is that you log into that network and you share printers. It works out great where you can have even ten or twenty machines sharing a computer. Again you can also do it the old way and direct your computer on a network. You can send those faxes for free. Yet I have no idea how that works. -
Is there any browser based on I.E 6.0 SP1?
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to myelin's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well I said before that when I installed Firefox NOadware found it as a worm. Also FireFox never made a diffrence. -
You want to copy explorer while in WIndows? Just install Winrar keep it open and end Explorer then copy it. I forget if you can still copy if Explorer is closed. I would use Enditall or Pcrview to end explorer while the WInrar window is open. Also put your main HD as a secondary drive and use another drive to copy it.

Is there any browser based on I.E 6.0 SP1?
Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa replied to myelin's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Well so far Sea monkey passes those hurdles that IE4 will not and using my IE4 is safe seeing how I do not visit such webpage or take my chance with IRC chats. I personally do not recommend IE6 unless you really need something specific. My motto is there is allways another way. Then again with using credit cards I suggest just using the credit card on trusted pages. I never buy anything from Gamestop or MAcy online which is dumb unless I really and posotivitily need to. I use my credit card for moving money and buying from my favorite Web comic artists. Again you might want to clear out all old data after using credit cards. Then again if you are not running hot on the wages you should not worry. People go after you on a persoanl scale when they know you like your best freind or Co worker. -
I have just run into a recent problem again that I thought I got rid of the last time. I decided to replace the Wininit.exe with the Bak copy and now it displays my Config sys has faultiy entries. So now I decided to replace these copies with a fresh copies and Windows just sit shiva at the boot screen.
-
Well I used FireFox before and then I used a NoAdware and it spotted FireFox as a worm. That is why I reframe from using Firefox anymore. I am using Seamonkey( which is really nice ) but I still don't get what they did to make my IE4 to sit shiva like that. About Viruses I find that not visiting porn rings and Xing out of multiple loading pages or using Ctrl+Alt+Del at the right time will stop them in there tracks.

Another thing you can do is in the Bios you can set the drives before you go into Windows. IF your biois support this option. Also about using outside programs to aline drives I would use this only if I need to use the D drive constantly. About jumping in and out of DOS is another story. I think by the description it will work in DOS but you can't use the extra features. You could test the program while running windows to see if it works the way you want it to. Somebody needs to test this with a DOS program that loads items from multiple drives. About this the extra partitian to the primary drive should have sloved the problem however in your case you have more then one.

I like many people went to bid on Ebay and Bam I try to finish one of many manual Snipe bids and instead of winning I get nothing but the same screen. This would commonly occur when I am in the users MyEbay screen but now it is in the the final pages before you finish a bid. What in tarnation did they do and what can I do unincluding upgrading to another browser or "upgrading" to IE7 SP? I am trying to avoid spyware so I do not update my browser. About getting another browser I heard Seamonkey was good for starters and this ARACHNE DOS Browser. I heard the new Web "standards" have changed rapidily over the years and it's going to get worst.
-
I understand there is a billion things I could do. I could install some outside software like dvd play and hope for the best. Then again programs like that plays jumpy even on 1ghz machine with nothing else alone. Requires me to use outside software like a decoder that has Region lock or DVD Region+CSS Free. I could download Media Player Classic but I would rather not for my own personal reasons. I probably have four diffrent versions of MPC somewhere on my machine or one it's harddrive. If there is a crack with BSplayer to give it a DVD read function I would take that but I still prefer the simple DVDPLAY. So far DVDPLAY displays everything in perfect crystal clear picture without the use of outside products.
-
I tried the above link before and I activated the dvd command in in Windows media player which is just dvdplay with a hand replaced for the arrow. Even with WMP6 only movies with no subtitles will play. The play back is great and everything but my real problem is just playing movies with subtitles. That is the only error I have with this program. Anything else besides that is great. I can watch multiple dvds while downloading various things at days at hand. I prefer this over power dvd or media player classic. What I am aiming for is a list of things that could interfer with the playback of subtitles and a list of drivers and combinations that would provide playback. for example I have the "cinemst2.sys" and "vdmindvd.sys" from the Windows 98 FE disc in the System32 directory. I need information with compdable drivers decoders that dvdplay will be able to use to play dvds with subtitles.
-
We all heard of the dvdplay that is found in Windows 98 and Windows ME. the way I found dvdplay was editing the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD\shell\play\command C:\WINDOWS\DVDPLAY.EXE Default DVDPLAY dvds on my 500 mhz pc with perfect bliss. no jumping unless I switch windows. My problem is when DVDPLAY opens it give me the message that you would see before putting the decoders in the system32 folder. Only this time there is one error. "The Follow will not render - subpicture stream." The problem I am have is DVDPLAY will not open any DVD with subtitles. Every other DVD works just as long as there no subtitles on the disc. The main reason I use DVDPLAY is the fact that DVD play is simple use. DVDPLAY is not Region locked unless your DVD drive is Region locked. DVDPLAY is small and sleek. I could always use VLC to play a DVD but in VLC when I view extras or anythig else unincluding the film I can see lines or it wil be blurry. Then again my Monitor is a $10 19 inch Bubble screen Dell. I have tried uninstalling DVD Region Universal. Removing DVD express that was leftover from my Direct DVD installment. I have searched the forums and tried installing DXM6 and the Cinepack decoders 99 but not 98. I have tried using the ME decoders in place of the 98 and even replacing the decoders. I lastly tried to install vobsub but that never really helped Thank you for responding.
