  1. We are running XP pro. No vista. If I convert my understanding is that all users will need to upgrade to 2007?
  2. If I did it was not intentional. I did not specifically convert.
  3. I read the link but I can open the database as long as it resides on the local computer and appears to work fine as long as I have it set for Access 2003 format. The link still doesnt explain why i cant set a trusted location across a network.
  4. I have recently installed MSO 2007 on a new PC and can not open a database file created with 2003 that resides on a remote network across an IPsec VPN. I have tried to change the security setting for trusted locations to include the network location but it keeps telling me I can use that location. 2003 worked fine with out this new "Trusted Location" thing. I could really use some help with getting this figured out. Thanks!
  5. My network is client server running 1 server 2003 for everything including DC and a basic firewall/DSL router as a gateway (no VPN capabilities). The remote network is a small workgroup with the Linksys as the DHCP/Internet gateway/VPN server. There are no configuration settings on the Linksys for PPTP except "Enable" and adding client accounts (username and password) so as far as the remote network setup goes do I need to do some kind of routing on both ends to get the workstations through the VPN servers?
  6. Yes the Linksys does support IPSEC but my local router only supports pass through and setting up IPSEC on 2003 seems insanely difficult (i tried it once with no success). I am not trying to secure goverment secrets so PPTP would be fine for now. PPTP is supposed to be easier to manage and deploy. Besides i would like to know if it will work.
  7. This is my first attempt at setting up PPTP for site to site to third party PPTP server. Here is my network; router/gateway/switch------server 2003 (dns, dhcp, rras for remote pptp access) and a couple of workstations. All works fine for remote pptp access to my server. I am attempting a connection to a remote Linksys RV042 PPTP server using my 2003 as a client (calling router). I have added the Demand dial Interface and i can connect to the Linksys via PPTP and ping the Linksys but not any other devices on the remote network from my server. I can not ping anything on the remote network from any workstations in my network. I have tried to find documentation on how to accomplish this but have been unsuccessful. Can any one help out? Is this even possible? Thanks
  8. I have recently set up a Vista Ultimate machine on my home network and added to the domain (DC = server 2003 enterprise) This is my first expeience with Vista. I can open the Documents folder but when I try to open the folders/files in the Documents folder i get "Access Denied". File Shariing Wizard is off and I am redirecting My Documents to a network share. I have read that Vista has restructured/renamed directories and this causes issues with access to My Documents when using Vista if they are created with XP. I have not been able to find anything that is very clear on the fix (except for manual owner ship changes on each folder that i tried and didnt work). I cant believe that client/server networks that are migrating Vista in are having to correct this on a per folder basis (lots of work!). So my questions are 1. can anyone ponit me in the right direction to fix this? 2. what is the impact on users that logon to both Vista and XP machines? Thanks
  9. I have a Dell inspiron 8600 that I recently had to reinstall XP pro on due to virus's. I ran wipe drive to clean the hard drive then reinstalled the OS and installed the drivers/updates. All works fine except for the wireless. The wireless card does open but doesnt allways detect networks in the area and when I try to connect to a wireless network it does detect it cant get an IP. I tried Assigning static settings and it says its connected but I cant ping anything on the local or public network. I have installed all the current drivers. The wireless card is an Intel WM3A2100. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is?
  10. How can i setup file sharing in a workgroup without having to share with everyone? Can this only be done in a client/server enviroment? If so can any one assist or send some links? The workgroup is a mix of PRO and Home with majority being PRO. Thanks
  11. I am working with a workgroup network. There is a VPN router at the front end that is used for remote access (mainly Remote Desktop). However, when we try to browse the network shares from the remote clients via the VPN we cant see anything as you would in a Client/Server network. The workgroup is setup on simple file sharing. This is probably basic but i cant seem to figure out how to get to the shares. Thanks for the help.
  12. I have it resolved!!! By using the GPMC download from MS i was able to isolate the problem. GPMC policy results were able to give me the specifics of the Folder Redirection failure. In my case it happened to be some files that I had in My ebooks folder that i use to copy CD's into. The error I was getting was that the file(s) were in use by another process and could not be accessed. I don't know what the process was or why they would be used to begin with. They were nothing more than copies of CD's. Any how after removing the folder everything redirected fine. One other note is that folder redirection uses the recyclers also. I discovered this when i deleted the files and GPMC policy results pointed to them also. Hope this helps others in the future.
  13. jpatto, Rename the folder on the workstation? The folder to redirect to is a share on the server. I am not following you on renaming the folder on the workstation side.
  14. No, only one account has a problem on any machine. All others are redirecting the folders just fine. Here is another strange thing, I logged on via remote desktop today to check the target for My Documents and now it is back to the old target location. Yesterday it was the new location when logging in via remote desktop. The account originally tried to redirect because some of the files/folders did transfer to the new location.
  15. I am running 2k3 enterprise at home as a DC, DHCP,DNS VPN server etc and XP pro for work stations. I recently Changed the path for redirecting MY Documents in Group Policy. All user accounts are redirecting fine with the exception of one (my personal one, go figure). When I login at a work station the My Documents target is the old folder. If i login to the server via Remote Desktop or locally the new location is the target for My Documents. Again this is only happening with one account. Also, not all of the contents of My Documents were transfered to the new location and there are several frdxx.tmp files in the new location. Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this? Thanks
  16. Thanks for the input Tarun. Unfortunately Dial-a fix did not correct the problem after running all the fixes but it did clear the update history and now it wont install windows installer updates (fails as other updates) I have also tried a windows repair but i dont think it repaired properly because all the MS SP's and updates are still present and i have not seen them remain after previous repairs. Cluberti, I'll give the the link you sent a shot (DCOM) and see what happens.
  17. My desktop has recently started to fail on installations from MS/Windows update. This also includes installing a downloaded and saved copy of IE7. I can still install other software. The PC is a workstation in a domain and I have set in Group Policy to auto update and it fails. When i manually update (as an Admin) it hangs at the "Initializing Installation" for a couple minutes then reports that the installation was unsuccessful and requests a reboot to complete the install but nothing happens. I dont know where to go from here short of a windows repair or reinstall. No new software installed however I did remove it from a domain and rejoined it but I dont think that should have any impact on updates? Any ideas would be appreciated.
  18. Thanks for the help. I did infact find a autorun file and folder on the root. Removed them and no more autoplay! I did figure out the mapping issue. First problem was the pwd for the the user account used to connect the mapped drives changed. Second, if you click "login using different user" you dont get the option to save password as you would if you just clicked finish and allow the logon prompt to come up. This check box must be marked for auto reconnect of mapped drives.
  19. I have recently encountered a Network drive mapping problem. Here is the scenario; a workgroup of 7 XP pro work stations with simple file sharing enabled and 1 file server (win2k3 standard just a file server). Friday the mapped drives on the workstations stopped reconnecting on login. I disconnected the mapped drives and remapped them using a different account with the same problem (I have to right click to open and then login or open and login from windows explorer). Also when i double click the the mapped drive (which happens to be a system drive C:) the "Select which program to open with" window opens and when I right click the mapped drive in my computer Autoplay shows up is this normal. I did not set up the shares or mapped drives but I do know the drives connected automatically before friday.
  20. I cant do a screen shot or remove the SBC install at the moment Sonic (we are in different states and he likes the SBC set up) and besides he doesnt need the VPN it was just to help me with some testing.. However I was told (in another forum) that the problem probably lies with the SBC yahoo install package. It more than likely sets up a proxy server for the connection that would prevent a VPN connection from being created. Thanks again! Here's a quote from the other source "Due to you have a PPPoE connection running on the other PC, this could be the problem: If you have an active Winsock Proxy client, you cannot create a VPN connection. A Winsock Proxy client immediately redirects data to a configured proxy server before the data can be processed in the fashion required by a VPN connection. To establish a VPN connection, you should disable the Winsock Proxy client. And since a PPPoE connection acts like a Proxy client, that would be why you are getting the problem. Can you set up the PPPoE connection on the modem, instead of the PC?"
  21. Sorry about the posting Sonic. I didnt catch that it actually needed to be typed in. Thought the Icon would take care of it. Thanks for the input on MCE. I didnt realize it was actually a Pro OS. But like i was saying it seems odd that you can go through the motions to create a VPN on this machine up to the point where you enter the company name and the text field is grayed out and has SBC allready filled in.
  22. Does anyone know if Media Center 2005 actually supports VPN clients? I had my Dad try to set up a VPN connection on his Media center machine and when he gets to the "Enter Company Name" it is grayed out and prefilled with "SBC". All updates are installed. He has a HP machine using SBC yahoo dsl with the install disk (boo!). Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title. Please follow XP Forum Rules from now on. --Sonic
  23. Here is the scenerio. A XP pro dual NIC machine connected to a workgroup on segment "A" (NIC A) and a auto dial system on its own segment segment "B" (NIC B) (no wan access). I need remote access to the auto dial system (using a specified port) via segment "A" from the internet. I am not that familiar with routing and dont know if bridging can do what i need (I havent set up routes or bridges yet). The port has been forwarded in the router to NIC "A". I believe it should be forwarded to NIC "B" via a route or bridge, right? If so what method and how? If more info is needed let me know. Thanks!
  24. Can files be shared across different workgroups on the same segment. i.e. segment = 192.168.0.1, one WG = A, another is B. Can you share a folder/file on a PC in WG A with the PC's in WG B? Thanks. The answer is yes I have discovered. So what would be the point in having more than one workgroup name? Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title.
