Workgroup network browsing over VPN

I am working with a workgroup network. There is a VPN router at the front end that is used for remote access (mainly Remote Desktop). However, when we try to browse the network shares from the remote clients via the VPN we cant see anything as you would in a Client/Server network. The workgroup is setup on simple file sharing. This is probably basic but i cant seem to figure out how to get to the shares. Thanks for the help.
