  1. The 2k is crashing, could you disable the automatic reboot on crash debug and provide the stop error you're getting ?
  2. Lastest arcserve version have tapecopy.... read the admin guide.
  3. Might be a problem with sp3 or lower and PIII. To solve this you might want cpuidle extreme (even if it is not freeware anymore).
  4. Indeed NTFS has been improved since NT4 (even with nt4 service pack 4 ntfs version changed) and if the drive was plugged on an XP the ntfs structure might have been altered and then generating errors when in NT4.
  5. Which service pack is your XP ?
  6. Networker for example but any backup tool with media cloning feature should be able to do it.
  7. I also saw this strange behaviour with a strange IDE CDROM issue. The CDROM if plugged on IDE connector and even alone and as slave or master or cable select (even without its power cable) would freeze the boot sequence. The only way to fix this problem was to plug it on a pci ide adapter.
  8. For contextmenu handler for XP, see there.
  9. I had the same issue with other computer. It seems to happen when the os need to detect again the usb device. The only way i found, was to let the os detect the new devices by login in and waiting.
  10. Yes it is related to the restore of the mbr. When you use acronis to restore your xp partition, you should only restore the partition not the mbr and don't modify the active flag on the restored partition if it wasn't before.
  11. Of course with the right backup software.
  12. As i understand, you're trying to modify mouse option in the local administrator profile. If you can access to this reg key it is because the administrator is logged in and if you can run your batch with the administrator account then why not use HKey_current_user instead of HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX-500 ? If you still want to edit this reg entry with administrator logged in but with another account, you'll have to get the right sid in a proper way: Use getsid.exe from the XP support tools and filter its output then do the reg query.
  13. You 'll need to add as a service and then add it also to the safe mode ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal).
  14. I tried both and i get a better reliability with powerline networking. The speed isn't that great (you can find easily some benchmark for most adapters) but most of the time better than wireless. The benefits of powerline networking are: - reliability - speed - less dangerous (the wireless frequencies are on same level as the microwave) The drawbacks are: - poor security: your neighbor might be able to use network if he plug an adapter. You can crypt and use something like wpa but even it isn't very secure. - your electric installation might not support it. This is rare but i can happen. - you need a network adapter.
  15. To fix this, the only way is to replace the files in c:\windows\system32\config\* with the older ones if you're sure they're still okay. But this cannot be done when running xp, you'll need to boot on something with access to those files and make the changes.
  16. The problem seems to come from the 2.4Ghz wireless bridge as you can't ping it either when you have the problem or the switch before. I'll check both of them and try to replace one of them with a cable when the problem occur to be sure to find the faulting component. It seems one of those blacklist your comp after a reboot, perhaps due to a bad packet sent. I'll also try to active XP firewall and/or disable the interface and then reboot then active the interface and try again. I would also remove/disable all unused network adapter as they might ask for an ip address and getting denied. So i would set a static IP/dns on the used network adapter and disable dhcp service (just to be sure).
  17. If you removed the cpu heatsink, i would ask if you replaced the thermal paste and put it back as it was ? I would also try to separate all parts and then put them together one after an other (after cleaning them if needed) and try the computer each time. Also you might try to go in bios and let it like that for ten min and check if the system is still responsive.
  18. Could you try the following : - open a dos box, ping an ip (one not working) - type arp -a - then check if the output of arp -a contains the offending ip. Even if there is a firewall, it should show the remote ip and mac address of the remote computer. If it is a sofware issue, then a "route print" might help. The only other test i see, would be swap ethernet cable with one of the working computer and test on both if the problem moved.
  19. Installing the hotfix with /integrate switch on an XP source might work if not edit txtsetup.sif section [FileSystems.Load] and add or replace fastfat.sys with exfat.sys.
  20. First you posted your XP key in the winnt.sif so you should replace it.... And the error is probably coming from the txtsetup.sif with the [WinntDirectories] section and item 82.
  21. I think this link should help you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308568.
  22. Did you check the netmask (is it the same on the other computers ?)?
  23. It seems Passware found a way to "hack" bitlocker or brute force it : http://www.lostpassword.com/hdd-decryption.htm.
  24. Select Windows 7 32Bit on the HP support and download and you'll get all 32 bits drivers. Most of them should work on XP. For the others, you might find them on the components makers (ex: the nforce chipset components driver can be downloaded from nvidia.com).
  25. The special account "creator owner" appeared with XP if i remmber correctly. If it has rights on folder (the default) any folder you create will get the rights and this will change the real rights because "creator owner" will be replaced by the creator owner the file or folder. So the right thing to do on your users homedir folder is to cut inherited rights remove all defaults security except administrators, system, your backup account (sometime not needed as it might be already in administrators). Those ones must have full control. Then add the user on this folder with the only the "change" rights. Apply this to all the subfolders once. Then every new folder created by the user will inherit the change right and won't get anymore so he won't be able to change rights.
