I'll try and get that emailed for you kartel. Ever think of upgrading to XP?

no i didn't get the disk.
I can make a nero image of the disk if you have somewhere I can upload it to for you. I don't have much room left on my webspace right now (3 kids 2 digital camera full webserver).

Well I've always tried to stay away from on board graphics. That is why I wanted the AGP. And until this Asus I'm replacing I've always used 2nd hand and super old parts to stay on the cheap.I was getting scared that you really were going to by a motherboard with AGP.You really think this is going to be faster then my AMD64 3800 with 3gb and 6800nVidia 256 PCI-e? And if it is I have no problem switch computers with her. They're both in identical cases, it's not like she'd notice.

by like $5.99 heh. Plus the CPU comes with a free mobo I can toss up on eBay or use in the next system I sell/upgrade.much better choice on the processor there. i was looking at that for you but it was over your budget.good luck with your new stuff.Thanks. I hate buying older stuff like this, but I just got my new system in early Feb and I have to keep each computer at least 2 years.

I'm looking at this AMD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103010
And this mobo (thanks to punto and ripken's recomendations)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813157084
Isn't a sempron a gimped athlon much like a celeron is a gimped pentium?

Did you get the ASUS Probe software that comes with the board? Should be on your driver's disc under utilities.

Ran Prime95 for about 5 minutes and it froze.
[Wed Aug 02 23:48:50 2006]ERROR: ILLEGAL SUMOUTPossible hardware failure, consult readme.txt file, restarting test.
Don't see any way to see what the hardware failure is.
I think i'm going to give the 754 board a shot.
New psu is in. Caps checked, nothing appears to be leaking.
They don't necessarily have to be leaking. Check the caps for "BULGING" primarily at the top.
Yeah, I'm not going to go through all that for this board. Thanks for the help everyone and all the great advice. If you want to recomend a 754 and AMD for <$150 usd post the link here. Needs to have agp 8x and 184 pin DDR memory compatability.

IF you decided that you really do want to upgrade than either get s939 or am2. the only thing with am2 is that u will also have to get some ddr2 but that stuff is extremely cheap now, a gig for under 100$.
I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible. Replace only the board and/or cpu. Thats why i was looking at the 754s or even sticking with a socket a. heck if i could just get memory that was compatable with this board that would be the best. $175 is the outside most i can spend on this right now.
u already have a nice comp so i dont really see the point..Thanks, always nice when someone tells you that you have a nice rig. The one I am having a problem with is my daughters. Right now she is having to game on my laptop hooked up to her monitor.

LordFett, did you read what I posted? "I would try another power supply and also check the core if it´s not damaged eg. look for broken corners."
No I missed this post because you posted while I was posting. I'll try swapping out the PSU. When I installed the cooljag I checked the cpu and didn't see any damage. I will check again. Thanks for the suggestion.
And if you switch to S754, go for an ASRock K8NF4G-SATA2 NF4 integrated graphics board (nVIDIA GeForce 6100), or the AM2 version of this board. Nice price and rock stable. Remember that ASRock is a daughter company of ASUS.Thanks for the tip. No I didn't know that ASRock was part of ASUS. I figured they were trying to ride Asus' coat tails. I've never been big on integrated graphics cards, I'll take a look around and see what else they've got to offer.
@Shindo_Hikaru is there a list of compatable memory for this board?
Check the capacitors. If you see any that are bulging or leaking, there's the problem.Interesting. Going over the board now.

check in the event viewer for an error
Nada.
A bunch of stuff about a board that used to rock and now sucks.Hmm, maybe it is time to find another Socket A board then. I wish I still had the 512mb I got with the board, but I upgraded and sold that stick when I got my new computer.
Anyone recomend a good Socket A with AGP and will work with my AMD 2700 and don't have memory issues?
This system used to be rock solid.
Hmm doesn't look like there is too much Socket A stuff out there. I guess the next step up would be a 754? 3000+ AMD and an ASUS board for about $160?

Froze again tonight while my daughter was playing her Bratz! game. CPU temp was 111f and mobo was low, high 80s low 90s. Did look at it's actual temp, just that it was well below the cpu.
Here is my DxDiag from just before the crash.

@ripken, I do play on the other computer, but just about ANYTHING freezes this computer. When my daughter isn't using it I convert a lot of video files. So while I have my main computer for gaming, I use (or try to use) this one for utility.
a 5200 Nvidia pretty standard, quite simular to the 4200, only diference is my 4200 is actually faster then 5000 series nvidia's. You might find that heatsink and fan on ebay.Megaspeed's card isn't that standard. If you look at the image I uploaded you can see there is something that prevents most fans from attaching to the board.
I've got an aftermarket heatsink and fan that almost fits, I'm thinking of drilling a hole into the heatsink to go around this cylinder so it will fit.
So far since I put the cooljag back on I haven't had any problems. I hopefully have this thing licked.

lordfrett-have you ever thought of upgrading? either the whole system or maybe just the video card? your current video card is pretty useless.
This is my 6 year old daughter's computer. The video card is only a temp. I have a nVidia 5200 128mb but the fan doesn't work. I have a replacement fan but there is a cylinder thing in the way of it.
I will check around on Thermaltake's site and see if they have a fan specifically for this manufacture's card. Even Megaspeed is having a hard time finding a replacement fan for it.
I only use this pc to convert .tivo files to mpegs and to play WoW when my wife wants to play The Sims 2.
My main computer is:

The ATI card is only a temp in the system. I have a nVidia card but the berings in fan went. MegaSpeed is trying to find the right replacement fan for it.
For some reason the days left for activation went from 23 to 0 last night so I am reinstalling now. I will run that once installation has completed.

Ok my memory is Infineon 1gb, DDR DIMM HYB25D512800BE-5
http://www.alldatasheet.co.kr/datasheet-pd...512800BE-5.html
The page says it is 512megs but it is 1gb.
The hard drive is a Maxtor 20gb model 2B020H1.

whats the new heatsink you tried? like i said 35C is a normal temp, so leave it. has it crashed since u put on the new heatsink?
The new heatsink is actually my old heatsink. It is a cooljag http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1385
I know the temp is good, I was going to put the old one back in to see if WoW does over heat it. Just as something to rule out.

What i am looking for is your ram model and brand
I'll check tonight. I doubt it is the RAM unless the board/cpu are really picky I've had 3 different chips from 3 different manufacutres in, all with the same result.

Their is other related issues to AMD (yuck) and certian model or brand motherboards or other hardware related issues, which is why i am asking for the computer specs
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
CPU: AMD 2700+ 2.17GHz
Vidcard: ATI PCI 64mb
I don't think it is the mobo/cpu combo (unless one of them is burning out) I ran this setup (different vidcard) for 2 years without any problem. After I swapped the fan/heatsink I started thinking about when I started having the problems and it was about the time that I put this new heatsink on. It has a case fan on it with red LEDs (my brother's chop job). I don't think the fan was cooling enough.
I'm going to switch back to the "bad" fan/heatsink tonight just to see what temps look like after 15 minutes of WoW.

I installed ASUS Probe. CPU was idling at 111F. I swapped out for another heatsink/fan I had and that dropped the idle to 95-98 and 30 minutes of WoW only took it to 104.
I hope this has solved the problem.

You're referring to product activation. You never have to register.
Yes that is what i meant, activation. No I have never registered.
Thanks both for the link. I'll check that out.
Any ideas on the 2nd part of my post?

When aquiring new software such as nero, i would uninstall the previouse version and install the new versions.
I would to, but some programs allow for automatic updates of programs. Nero is one of these programs.

The poll on the main page made me think of this. I have several (5 pcs and 3 laptops) computers with XP pro. I have roughly 12 serial keys. I am trying to identify which computer goes with which code. Is there any way to find this info out? Some of the codes that I don't think I've used are showing as activated when I try and use them.
Also is there a way to plug a code into Microsoft.com and find out if you've registered it and if so what hardware it is tied to? I know that a few of them I'ved used and then reformated the drive or had a drive failure.

One thing I've found with Nero is that if you upgrade from the version you installed it totally mucks up stuff.
I got Nero for use with DVDShrink and then found that I can edit .tivo files with NVExpress 1. I upgraded once to NVE2 after installation and it stopped working. I got a new hard drive down the road and installed NVE2 and it worked for editing my .tivo files again. I tried again starting with NVE1 upgrade to 2 and it didn't work.

We have 21" CRTs so we do everything in 1280x1024.
I'm going to pass on the sempron. When Xmas bonus comes I'll drop my nvidia from the good rig into this one and then toss two of those 7800s or something into the gamer.
