You'll also see at the bottom of the adaptec link a link to known problems with 7200.11 SATA drives with their RAID controllers. Perhaps, it may be helpful to search the knowledge bases of all RAID controller manufacturers since they will get the latest info from the drive manufacturers about known problems and solutions for a given HDD type and/or interface type. This will provide an indirect means to find solutions and may provide more insight into all the different problems ones HDD drives can have for a given part number whether one uses RAID or not. Here's some info from 3ware.com on their RAIDS for ES drives. This Seagate ES series (ES series include ST3750640NS 750GB, ST3500630NS 500GB, ST3400620NS 400GB, ST3320620NS 320GB, and ST3250620NS/820NS 250GB) with older code (fw 3.AEE) might exhibit drive off-line after many occurrences of cable CRC errors under direct attached configuration. Please contact Seagate for latest drive firmware. For all SATA type drives, 3ware.com says the SATA controller auto-negotiation for 150 or 300 mb/s speed may not always be reliable which could tell the BIOS the drives aren't there when the port gets locked. My guess is it may appear as a hardware hang and the busy light always on due to lockup - especially during BIOS POST. It could be a simple race condition triggered by the auto-neg: it's to bad that it took so long to trigger this though.

Here's some important information for you that I came across accidentally on Dells site. It's not always easy to find things one is looking for there. It will explain what others have discovered with the Intel 570/570J processor on GX280 computers. It seems to be BIOS version related. See the link below. He didn't test the Intel 570 though. See his comment below related to the BIOS version A08 vs. A0. So you could flash to A0 BIOS to use the 570J processor at 2.8GHZ vs. 3.8GHZ and put up with all the BIOS bugs. Or maybe do: I checked all the BIOS versions for the gx280 and there was no mention that a BIOS fix was done to give it NX enable/disable capability for no-execute which the 570J processor has and which was done for the Dimension desktop BIOS' (I previously posted) in one of the various BIOS update fixes they did. Moreover, all the 5x1,6x1 have EM64T also the 6x0 and the others had 2meg of processor cache. Thus, Dell could have updated the BIOS for the gx280 line of computers to recognize all these processors that only have the FSB of 800mhz to be compatible with the chipset 915[G] if they wanted to, but they differentiated their computer line to the Dimension series to make them different and incompatible with the GX computer series although both use the LGA775 processor (at least those that have the 800mhz FSB). So essentially the GX280 could be compatible with the EM64T and 2meg cache if DELL would update the BIOS, but they won't for computer selling purposes. Now the computers are considered obsolete thus it won't be done. So the list of fixes for each BIOS they mention "updated with newer processors" doesn't mean much since it isn't specific, nor are some of the specs for the processor for a given computer line since it generically says P4 whereas other DELL computer spec documentation like the dimension 4700 lists the specific processors although this list may be out-of-date vs. the updated BIOS version. Thus, per the website posted earlier they do mention the M8965 processor upgrade kit for the GX280 which uses the 570 processor -only. And because the 570 processor doesn't have the NX enable/disable feature it should work with the A08 BIOS; otherwise DELL wouldn't have sold it back then. But, Intel's website doesn't even mention that the 570 processor ever existed (except for one webpage with microcode bugs listed), in their table that cross references it with their family of processors and what features and chipsets they have for a given family of processors. Not even the english Wikipedia intel processor table mentions the 570 processor. This could be due to the wiki writers relying on Intel info in which their family table might just be missing this piece of information. As an added note: Magazine articles came out in November of 2004 stating the new intel processor 570J. Assuming full manufacturing of computers for sale in the Summer of 2005, this should be enough time for Dell to update the BIOS for the gx280 line since DELL was already patching the Dimension computers BIOS around April of 2005 to handle the NX enable/disable bit.(see earlier post). Note2: The dimension 4600 series used the old 845 chipset and the BIOS was last updated in fall of 2004 before the LGA775 570J processor was announced. Thus, the NX enable/disable BIOS fix to handle these newer processors was never implemented. Thus, Dimension 4700 and above should be used for the 570J processor with the lastest BIOS fixes for them. The dimension 4600 and below seem to use the old P4 Northwood processor which is 478 pins. Conclusion: Try going back to A0 version of BIOS and tell us what happens and what motherboard PN you have via Belarc. Or, find the M8965 service kit or just the 570 processor and see if that works. I did see this in the DELLS spreadsheet for Dimension line of computers for the 4700 series that the heatsink W4254 is for 3.4Ghz (intel 550) and faster cpus.

If it´s the tower model than it´s just the standard PSU, if it´s the slim version than as far as I know it´s not a standard sized PSU. The reason I chose to use old Dell power supplies is because the outside metal case on one side has the two tabs that allow one to lock the power supply in place in addition to the two rear screws. I couldn't tell from the after market ones if they have the tabs. If they don't then there are only two screws holding the thingy in. Also, I searched for PFC power supplies since they utilize the power more efficiently thus reducing the power supply heat. 2ndly, I also searched for the number of cable types to match i.e. molex, SATA, floppy, along with the motherboard 20pin vs 24 or 20+4 pin power connector , etc and to have a similar count of each although one could get adaptor cables for the various molex vs. SATA and even to convert a 24pin power to 20 pin. I believe the gx280 supplies I used are 20pin if I remember. I've already upgraded to 4gb of crucial memory which has a max speed rating of 1066mhz for DDR2. It does slow down to th 915G chipset speed of 533mhz. The memory was cheap at $42 for each pair of 1GB and if I should get rid of the gx280, I could put the old memory back in and reuse this faster memory in a newer PC i.e. the GX520,GX620's. I can't use ballistic memory since the motherboard and BIOS don't allow me to adjust the voltages. Thus, I assume the mother board uses the standard 1.7v which most standard memory chips use. Here's the crucial kit I installed (times two) CT2KIT12864AA1067 2GB kit (1GBx2), 240-pin DIMM As for getting a GX520/620, the company has these, but I have to wait till the warranty (3 years) runs out before they will get rid of them - about another year or two. It looks so far that the 375 watt K8956 has two extra SATA power cables to make four instead of two. Thus, this one should work to, but will keeping googling for more info.

I think the the 661 will work in the gx520/gx620 Dells. I don't know if they came out with a service kit for the 570J models or what the part number is. Moreover, I've already bought my Xmas present too and have installed the following dell part numbers and they work POWER SUPPLIES: Upgraded from 250Watt W4827 which can be used in dimension 4700, 8400 and the gx280 that has PFC. Whether Power Factor Correction is active or not I don't know for mine. PFC improves the power efficiency of the power supply. Searched various power supply websites and I upgraded to, 350 watt G4265 which works in Dimension 8400, workstation 370 and has PFC. All the cables and total count match my old 250 watt one. It fits my gx280 desktop tower and is currently working. There is one extra power cable which I don't use on connector P4. The dell list above suggests 305 watt Y2663 which goes in Dimension 4700 and has PFC which should work too. I'm looking into the 375 watt K8956 that is used in Dimension 9100, gx270, precision 380 to see whether it has PFC and will fit the box and the number of cable types match for the future. The dell list above, the manual nor any google reference will tell me the dell part number for it although the GX270 does give a part number on the internet which is 67JDG. If one looks at the user manuals on the gx270 for the motherboard, it looks exactly like the GX280. I've installed it and it fits. PROCESSOR: Due to the service kit M8965 for the gx280 it looks like the intel 570 will work. I'm still wondering why the 570J doesn't at present per your post.

No, if you have A08, then you have all the other fixes. There is no newer version of the BIOS. DELL customer support can't tell me what processors that A04 and A07 upgraded for nor the list of processors supported. They keep pointing to the user manual which generically states Intel P4 processors - but doesn't specify which ones. Perhaps you can return the 570J for a 570 processor? I did a quick search on Dells site and came up with the Dimension 4700 which uses the 570 processor and the power supply is 305 watts. It doesn't mention 570J though... It also uses the 915G chipset. Now to find one bottom of the line Dell computer which used the 570J! Upon review of the BIOS updates for this machine 1/26/2006 A10 is the latest BIOS allowed newer processors. BIOS A07 4/7/2005 added NX enable/disable capability. I presume this allowed the win XP to control the no-execute bit along with recognizing the processors i.e. 570J which allowed for this. Note: Dimension 5000 says it supports P4 with hyperthreading, it has 305 watt power supply and BIOS A03 4/7/2005 updated for the NX enable/disable capability. Latest BIOS is 12/7/2005 A07 for newer processors etc. Dimension 5100 says it supports P4 with hyperthreading for both 5xxx and 6xxx (see 3rd x, maybe related to 'J' or no 'J' processor type), it has 305 watt power supply and BIOS A02 12/19/2005 upgraded for newer processors. Hmmm, I wonder if you have the latest BIOS for your computer flashed? Is your computer a dell gx280 computer? The A04 and A07 BIOS updates updated for newer processors. I have the A08 which was just a fix release. setting the parseautoexec in the hive to zero didn't stop it. I thus created a fake autoexec.bat with this in it. echo “@echo off”>>c:\autoexec.bat However, Savservice.exe will keep trying to run autoexec.bat forever now that it is present. It does stop the recording in the userenv.log though. I could also modify the registery per the Msoft site for userenv.log and shut the logging off entirely, but I might need it for other stuff in the future. So, I use the autoexec.bat technique for now. I've replaced the echo off with just an echo "executing autoexec" which appends to another log file in the same directory where the userenv.log is at to see if it actually executes the batch file. So far it doesn't, so the process id which checks for autoexec.bat being present only checks for the file to exist, but doesn't execute it.

Well, I uninstalled sophos and its firewall, cleanup the leftovers and rebooted. Now the autoexec.bat is still logged, but the process id it is associated with moves around from one process to another. The files are OS related, ie. svchost.exe, lsass.exe and one or two others. When I reinstall Sophos, it gets primiarly reassigned to the savservice.exe process again. No adware,rootkits, or viruses are found with sophos, superantispyware and Msofts month kb file for checking for rootkits etc. Other co-workers PC's who have the same antivir software don't seem to have this error being recorded in their userenv.log file. Yes, I've read the MSoft article too, and although rebooting will cause the log file to be less than 25megs, it's the idea that the autoexec.bat being recorded in it is the issue since its every 1-2 minutes and filled with these entries. I've done the following the registry to stop it short of turning off recording userenv.log altogether based on the MSoft registry entries. Here's what other people have done to try and stop it. ) Setting the following registry configuration: Hive: HKCU Path: Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Key: ParseAutoexec Value: 0 = autoexec.bat is not parsed 1 = autoexec.bat is parsed Hence, I've set it to zero and will reboot to see if this clears the problem for autoexec.bat

Don't know about this. However, if a create a dummy autoexec.bat in the root drive. The messages stop recording to the log file; however, Sophos is still accessing the drive and running the bat file every few seconds. The bat file just does an echo command. What a waste of computer time....

I found that I'm filling up c:\windows\debug\userenv.log with the following error. It can get to 25 megs in 24 hours. USERENV(788.7e0) 07:10:42:953 ProcessAutoexec: Cannot process autoexec.bat. For windows xp pro sp2 with patches, I don't have an autoexec.bat file I've read that the number '788' when converted from hexidecimal to decimal is the process id of the program causing the problem. In my case it is the Savservice.exe which is associated with the Sophos anti virus program. Is this common for Sophos anti vir and if not, how do i get Sophos to stop checking for an autoexec.bat file?

I'm wondering if there is (free) java software available that can do what Dell does for customer support for chatting with customers. At the end of the conversation, one can email the chat text to ones email account. Would this require setting up a chat server too? or is this only between the support person and the customer and hence doesn't require a server setup since it would be point-to-point between the PCs. This would eliminate me from having to install various client chat software like messenger vs. AIM vs. some other product. I'd prefer a Java based one.

can you be more specific? Rj. Well you answered it. Above you list "windows vista x86 SP1". I presume its for x32 and x64. And since its SP1, I presume the downloader contains the fixes/patches to VISTA since SP1 came out.

Based on the listed names on the windowsupdatedownloader link above, it doesn't specify which service pack is being used. So for example, it just says "Windows 2000" or "Windows XP" etc. Thus, this could be any of the service packs for the listed operating system not to mention those applications such as office not being updated for some time based on the date listed. Note: Besides the hotfixes and security patches, it would be nice to have a separate download file for each OS that has the addons stuff. That is for example, the deploy, support, wscript, mmc, windows symbol files directx updates etc.... stuff. The same applies for office etc.

The update lists are not up to date. windows XP SP2 hasn't been updated since about April 2008. There is no XP SP3 plus the patches. Vista SP1 is missing with patches Office 2007 patches are missing although office 2003 is available but doesn't distinquish between the SP's. No Windows 2000 SP4 plus the patches. I have the following windows versions, windows 2k Pro Sp4, windows XP Pro Sp3, Vista Ultimate Sp1 (next April it will be SP2) I'd like to get, win 2k3 Server Win 2k8 Home Server Win 7 Ultimate Since the above are pro versions I need the adm files for each to use gpedit.msc. I realize Non-Pro and non-server windows versions can't used gpedit.msc, but can be managed by the Pro or Server version. Thus here's what MSoft says. OK, the problem he told us is that he uses Virtual Drivers. Not Real drivers... I'm using Acronis Echo software. It has the capability to mount/unmount their 'tib' images. During the mounting process, a window that is doing autorun is displayed and then pops a window to ask what to do i.e. take no action, or open it in IE explorer. Note: mounting/unmounting of images under daemon tools doesn't generate the ftdisk system event warning message. So what is daemon tools doing that Acronis isn't? I can disable autorun/play on removable drives such as zip/cd/floppy (not HDDs though). But I can't disable it doing this while the virtual drive is being mounted. After the drive letter is assigned, I can then do a properties on it and see the autorun radio box to disable it in the future. However, at this point it is a mute point since it has already done the autorun/play during the process of assigning the drive letter and mounting the drive. There is nothing I can do at this point. I then unmount the virtual drive. The next day I mount it again and it autoruns/plays the virtual disk being mounted again. Of course, I can go into msconfig->services and display the service "Shell hardware Detection" and then this annoying popup wont occur when virtual drives/disks are being mounted. However, this disables autorun/play for all drives besides just virtual drives/disks. Hmmm, I wonder if the person who wrote the software has the ability during the mounting of the virtual disk/drives to tell the OS not to do autorun vs. the user trying to do it. Stuck at the moment on how to do it Moreover, has anyone experienced during the unmounting of virtual drives/disks that an 'ftdisk' code 57 is written to the system event log saying the system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Some people say it is due to improper unmounting of a USB drive or some other removable drive. Thus I presume that Acronis is not unmounting the virtual drive properly which is generating this warning in the system event log. Here are some scenarios others did to get this error message. Various programs mount a file/image as a virtual drive and can unmount it. However, during the mount autorun/autoplay is run. How does one prevent this, but only for virtual drives. I can't do this after it has already been mounted and I may not know the drive letter at the time before it gets mounted. So its hard to predict which drive letter will be used and will it retain the drive letter being blocked from autorun/play upon the next virtual drive being mounted.

Yes there is a big difference in speed when you use the onboard Video but only if your BIOS can "see" the actual speed and always use dual channel... Since the 915G is the intel graphics processor, I thought it had it's own onboard video memory which is separate from the system memory on the board although the system memory would have the graphics drivers loaded into high memory. Are you saying that the 915G uses regular system memory as video memory? NVidia has it's own video memory separate from system memory so system memory speed shouldn't have to much affect here I'd think since the NVIDIA onboard memory would need to be fast for gaming.

Would this stop it entirely from working? I bought a 3.6GHz Cedar Mill thinking it would work in this GX280(tower version) and now when it's in, the power button light turns orange and nothing happens on the screen. If this ends up being the case, the best anyone can possibly put in a GX280 would be a Prescott 570J Alot of people on websites say it just won't boot which apparently is the case for you. I presume if you put the old processor back in it will work. Moreover, the GX520,GX620 are the same BiOS' and the BIOS has been updated to the newer processors which includes 64 bit EM64T. Thus the Cedarmill will work in this (or it should since both the dell tower and processor type came out around the same timeframe). The other difference is the chipset. Mine is a 915G which is limited to 533mhz to RAM whereas the Gx520,620 has the 945G (if I recall) which can go higher to 800mhz/1066mhz. If you should upgrade to the 570J (mine is 530) it should run since I'm planning on doing this in the near future. The 'J' for no-execute bit shouldn't matter to the BIOS since the BIOS was written in the time period the "J" and "non-J" processors came out. If DELL's BIOS for these different processors was important then DELL would have a BIOS for the "J" and another for the "non-J" processors types. Also since the 530 is 84W and the 570J is around 115W (see wiki) you'll probably have to upgrade to a bigger heatsink. The original heatsink for 84W is G8113 which has four heat pipes and the new one is W4254 which is for performance per DELLS part list for the GX280 boxes , and from what I see on the net it has 6 heat pipes. I guess because there was a 50% increase in power, this means each set of heat pipes can get rid of 40-50 watts of heat. The original power supply is 250Watt, I presume one must upgrade to 305 Watts which is the biggest DELL makes for workstations. Why do I say this? Well the heat for the faster processor increased 35-40 watts, thus take the old power supply and add this on as 250+ 40 = 290 watts, plus a few extra 15 watts for extra measure. I presume because 95% of 305 is 290 watts. One doesn't want to run the PC at the full load of the supply but to have some reserve left over just in case. Here's the part numbers for the mini tower and tower - not the slimline ones, W4827 Mainstream Power Supply, 250 Watt, PFC, Dual Serial ATA, TMST Y2663 Performance Power Supply, 305 Watt, PFC, Dual Serial ATA, SMT If the BIOS doesn't support overclocking (or the ability to change the voltage), then you are stuck at the 1.8v DDR2 Ram chips. To get improved CAS one needs to increase the voltage typically around 1.9-2.45 V from what I've been seeing from RAM manufacturers. Some start at 1.8-2.x volts and the DDR3's start round 1.5v although DDR3 won't go in a GX280. What I bought, was crucial DDR2 CAS=7 1.8v 1066mhz 1 GIG chips in a two pack since the Gx280 can go to 4gigs , I bought two of these packs (cheap). They work, but they'll slow down to 533mhz due to the 915G chipset ram speed ,and the BIOS will tell you so too. Dell put in the cheapest they could find at the time, and since the GX280 is dual channel they put in two 400mhz which 2*400mhz equals 800mhz when interleaved to match the processor FSB. These are my thoughts on why they chose 400mhz. Why did I buy these 1066mhz ram chips? well, because they are the fastest for DDR2 in terms of mhz and in the future when I buy another used PC which should be faster, I can move these ram chips over to the new PC and put the old ones back in before selling the old computer. I haven't seen DDR2 memory for sale that goes faster than 1066mhz, at least crucial doesn't sell it at 1333mhz+.

Anybody know how to get the office help not only for 2003 but also for 2007 now? I'd prefer to download all the chm files and install locally rather than go thru the internet
