  1. Sorry about advising the CPU voltage overclock value for the X2. Nothing would've been broken, though When is the voltage "in the reds" according to that MSI board? What's nVidia Monitor saying? If it complains about the PCI Express, you should stop all overclocking immediately or just hope your video card can handle it.
  2. I'm interested in upgrading from an X2 4200+ to an Opteron 170 or 175. Editing videos is by far the heaviest stuff I'm doing on my computer so any power boost is welcome. Can the 175 "go higher" compared to the 170? I can have the 170 without paying anything if I sell the X2 4200 (about the same price), but I'd have to pay the difference when getting the 175. Is the 175 worth it compared to the 170?
  3. Both instances are at full load for roughly 10 seconds, then everything goes down and only the memory is being tested. If I then halt (for example) instance #2, instance #1 goes back to full load on that CPU core. It looks like one is interfering with the other.
  4. I've been doing that ever since I got the X2. Both the folders are on the F: drive (FAT32) and are called "Prime95" and "Prime952" respectively. One checks CPU0 and the other CPU1 (Advanced > Affinity). The processes of the Prime95 instances or the CPU usage history? The latter is as I described in my previous post. I'll check the processes tab now.
  5. Win2K-hfslipped doesn't need KB894391 when KB902400 is included so I assume it's the same for XPSP1 and XPSP2. I'll update the lists. Edit: Done.
  6. Are you interested in making a version of SW10 for Win2K? Else, just tell me what needs to be done so I can incorporate a Win2K-only version into the MultiCompiler utility.
  7. I'll put it this way:
  8. CPU: 1.325V (slighly lowered) MEM: 2.70V (under spec) NF4: 1.55V (same) Updated BIOS. Ran Prime95 for 8 hours and 3 minutes. By the way... Is there a program similar to Prime95? Most of the time, it doesn't run properly on systems set to "ACPI Multiprocessor PC". It starts out using 100% of CPU, but releases everything after about 5 to 10 seconds and uses 50% of memory instead. After several hours it's still on test 1 subtest 1. When you stop it, it displays the total time the test has been running and claims there were no errors. This problem does not occur when the system is set to "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" but that's hardly the point of an Athlon64 X2...
  9. @TommyP: Thanks. @Graham: Does Windows Update complain when you leave out KB894391?
  10. I know. I just don't have the time. It would probably show errors after 15 hours or so, but that's fine; it doesn't take that long to render a video. I'll leave it on overnight. That's the best I can do. The memory voltage can probably go back down now. It was running at 208Mhz before. I'll test the rest too.
  11. It cannot be installed via update.exe, that's for sure. When modding the build numbers and NT version numbers, the installation does start but quits immediately; a few seconds later, an error dialog comes up saying that "setup could not verify the integrity of update.inf -- make sure that Cryptographic Services is installed and running." When editing update.inf too much, it errors out immediately. The only thing I haven't tried yet is a manual integration into a Win2K installation source.
  12. You're right: the same files are being updated. All files are newer in the KB902400 update except for Rpcrt4.dll which stays the same. Note to TommyP... MS add this important note: "When you install these security updates, the installer checks to see if one or more of the files that are being updated on your system have previously been updated by a Microsoft hotfix. If you have previously installed a hotfix to update one of these files, the installer copies the RTMQFE, SP1QFE, or SP2QFE files to your system. Otherwise, the installer copies the RTMGDR, SP1GDR, or SP2GDR files to your system." This basically says that HFSLIP should install the GDR versions when not including KB894391 (and any other hotfix that also updates these files). Is there an easy way for HFSLIP to determine this?
  13. MSI K8N SLI Platinum / Athlon64 X2 4200+ Manchester. [My full specs] That page still contains info for the "safe" overclock I've been doing until today. It's now set to: - 2320Mhz clock speed (290x8.0) - 870Mhz HT speed (290x3) The memory is set to 133Mhz in the BIOS now, which results in 193Mhz with the settings above. The "NF4 voltage" is set to 1.55V. It was set to that before but I forgot to mention that on the page. [Screenshot] (904x800; 104kb)
  14. @ripken204: It depends, really. The MSI K8N SLI Platinum is the best board I had so far for my current X2 4200+. The performance, overclockability and stability is unmatched by the exact DFI board model you have. I also need three PCI slots: DC10+ capture card, SBLive 5.1 sound card, and the other is used for a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 when I need to backup someone's hard drive. The MSI K8N SLI Platinum features the same type quality chipset fan that DFI uses (at least the revision I have does) and similar PWM ICs (probably the main reason why it overclocks so well).
  15. You mean the one you posted yourself? You also write it doesn't work from svcpack.inf... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...=80#entry434881
  16. I'd be afraid to give any sort of advise. That board is known to NOT lock the PCI Express port when overclocking the CPU. Over a period of two/three months, my video card and that same motherboard died. Get the SLI Platinum version if you want to stick with MSI, which is the one I'm using now too. I could get an FSB over 300Mhz with my previous processor, a 3500+ Newcastle, but I don't know if a Venice can get there too. If your memory is DDR400, set it to 166Mhz (in the BIOS). Change the CPU FSB to 220Mhz, the multiplier to 10.5 and the HT multiplier to 4. On the same page, find that item that defaults to "Center Spread" (I forgot the name) and disable it. Raise the voltage to 1.35V. Back in Windows, install NVidia nTune and start NVIDIA Monitor (part of that package). See if you get an error message.
  17. Eh... Totally forgot about this thread. I got Flash 8 to work; this is the command I use in the silent installer I made for it: msistub flash8ie.msi /qb-! ALLUSERS=1 The "ALLUSERS=1" fixed the internal error I talked about earlier, and it allowed Flash 8 to be installed properly. Too bad this "fix" doesn't cut it for Shockwave 10 (no error message shows, but it doesn't install either). BTW... There's no need for the licensed installer of Flash 8; the full "non-licensed" MSI does the trick too.
  18. You might also want to try a checkdisk. Some time ago, Windows 2000 refused to reboot after pressing the OK button at the end of installation; it turned out the hard drive I was using to HFSLIP a Win2K source had a few bad sectors, in which one or more files from the SOURCE folder existed. Running checkdisk, removing the SOURCE folder and starting from scratch again fixed the problem. chkdsk c: /r You'll be asked if you want to do this at the next reboot. Type "y", press Enter, and reboot.
  19. These are no longer there in the new package: DRMClien.dll DrmStor.dll These are new: MFPLAT.dll wmdrmsdk.dll Here's a comparison of the first three DLLs that are available in each package: blackbox.dll: 10.0.0.3802 (288KB) blackbox.dll: 11.0.0.4332 (419KB) CEWMDM.dll: 10.0.3790.3802 (161KB) CEWMDM.dll: 10.0.3790.4332 (203KB) drmv2clt.dll: 10.0.0.3802 (491KB) drmv2clt.dll: 11.0.0.4332 (566KB) We're probably using different sources. Update for DRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122) Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB900325)
  20. That answers my second question. That answers my first question. The DLLs in wmfdist95.exe from the MCE rollup are newer; some gone, some new ones too.The only problem is: KB891122 = 5.0MB MCE 2K5 UR2 = 29.0MB I'm on 6.6 mbps broadband but not everyone is... Not according to MS, but I'll give it a try...
  21. That don't sound too good... I'll rephrase the question, then: will everything be as expected if I include Windows Media Connect 2.0 and wmfdist95.exe from XP MCE UR2? wmfdist95.exe in wmcsetup.exe (and in KB891122) = 28-Jan-2005 (5.46MB) wmfdist95.exe in XP MCE UR2 = 5-Aug-2005 (5.44MB)
  22. I vagely remember having asked this before but I can't find that thread. Should wmfdist95.exe (WMP9/10 codec package) still be placed in HF when including Windows Media Connect 2.0? The latter already contains the latest version of wmfdist95.exe so it would seem to me we can safely leave out the separate wmfdist95.exe file in this case.
  23. I could do that as an extra step for the first logon, but what about the post-setup wizard (activation, firewall, etc.)? That portion takes a while to complete so I want to be sure Windows doesn't put the volume on max again before entering that final wizard.
  24. Grab the silent installer by Zxian: multilingual / English only
  25. Ever since SP1 (I think), Windows XP natively supports the Creative SB Live 5.1 sound cards. The problem I have with that is that Windows always puts both the Master volume as well as the WAVE volume controls on the maximum, which is exceptionally annoying during the post-install wizard and the logon sound after the first log on; in both cases, the volume control panel isn't reachable yet. I'm usually testing slipstream installs during the night, so..... I could lower the volume on the cabeled remote that comes with my speaker set (Cambridge SoundWorks Digital 2.1), but it's a pain getting the knob in the right position again once everything is properly set up in Windows. I'm also too lazy to go around and unplug the speaker-out cable. I searched around a bit and came across this NirCmd tool. I could use a command line like nircmd.exe setsysvolume 30000 and wrap it in a silent installer, but would that work from SVCPACK? Or would Windows crank it up again when the post-install wizard kicks in?
