  1. Hello? I am installing a miniPCI wireless adapter on ThinkPad, and I'm getting the following error message upon reboot: Error 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the miniPCI network card. I called IBM and advised me to update the BIOS, and that didn't help. I called the card's manufacturer and told me that IBM "hard locks" their miniPCI to work with their own components. Am I really out of luck? By the way, the card is from Gigabyte and the model number is GN-WI01GS. Gigabyte says the card would work with Toshibas though. Thanks.
  2. Hello? I have both internal and external 56k modems. However, my connection speed is always around 46.6k either internal or external. I've heard about replacing existing phone line with a good quality one. I tried that but didn't help. Is there a way to increase the connection speed to near 56k somehow? Thanks.
  3. Hi all, Thanks for the great tips.
  4. Hi ripken204, So, once start using an inkjet printer, it'd be better to keep using it on a regular base to prevent ink drying? Thanks.
  5. Hi ripken204, Actually, I did that too. However, the color document only showed up partially printed and lightly. Even there, the black prints were missing. So, I suppose it's time to replace both color and black cartridges. But then, I just stored the printer away for about a year or so without using it. Will the cartridges dry up if you don't use them for quite some time as in my case? For future reference, how can I prevent this ink drying? Should I take out the cartridges before storing away the printer if I don't use the printer for quite a while? Well, that's rather inconvenient. Thanks.
  6. Hello? I am using HP PSC 2175 inkjet printer. This is a brand new printer with brand new cartridges (56 and 57). I've used the printer for a while and stored it away for a year or so. Now, I'm trying to use it again, but I can only see blank pages coming out. I'm thinking perhaps the cartridge needs to be replaced; so, I tried some self-testing on the printer, and I saw some nice color squares printed neatly. When I used the printer for a while before I stored it away, my usage was very sparingly. Could the cartridges have been dried/ used up so quickly already? Thank you.
  7. Hi, Well, I just disconnected the kvm switch completely and connected the monitor directly to the system. The same situation has just occurred. Monitor's power indicator light stays amber, not green, as if there's no video signal/feedback from the video card during the system boot. Next, I look at the system indicator light, and both hard drive access and system power indicator lights are lit and stays lit. If the system is, somehow, chugging along during the boot process, I can, at least, blame the video card, but the system appears to be hung as well. I am just puzzled. Could a power supply be the culprit as somone speculated earlier? But then, the power is supplied to both the monitor and the system even though they appear to be in sleep mode and hung respectively. Thanks.
  8. Hi pmshah, Thanks for your feedback. I'll heed your advice.
  9. Hi all, Thanks for valuable feedbacks. The video card is fairly new (ATI 64MB) as well as the monitor (Hyundai IQ-V770+). I will try fiddling with the kvm switch as ripken204 has suggested. As a last resort, I will look into the power supply replacement.
  10. Hello? I am using an Asus P4XP-X board for my system. Sometimes, my monitor is not on at all at system startups; so, I have to cold boot a couple of times to have it on and working. I have another system (different board) connected via a kvm switch, and do not have this issue. So, I am wondering if this issue is specific to the asus board. By the way, the kvm switch is Zonet's 4-port switch and the monitor is Hyundai V770+. Thanks.
  11. Hello? I am experiencing some problems in using ActiveSync (4.1.0) with Soyo's media card reader/writer. Basically, I find myself going through unplugging and replugging of pocketPC nemerous times in order for the Sync to recognize the PPC through the USB ports on the card reader/writer. Also, I am (almost always) creating some new partnerships in the Sync in order for the synchronization to work between the two. I don't know if this is an issue with the ActiveSync or with the poor card reader/writer. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks.
  12. Hello? I am using XP (SP2). How can I change the clock display on the taskbar to a 24-hour setting? Thanks.
  13. Hello? I have just installed avg free antivirus (7.1.392) for windows. When my system boots, the floppy drive is accessed for about 15 minutes with a floppy cleaner diskette in. I have never had this problem with clamav before. This is a bit anoying even though I could just take the floppy out and put it back to the drive to, sort of, disable the floppy access. The system bios is set not to seek/access the floppy drive during booting. Has anyone experienced the same and resolved it? Thanks.
  14. Hi all, Thanks. DL, I guess I could just remove the usb-to-ps2 adapter and try something as you did. However, I'm using a kvm switch where the mouse interface is only in ps2 style. Since this is not that big of a deal, I'll just keep using the mouse or replace it at some other time.
  15. Hello? I am using a ps2 optical microsoft wheel mouse via usb-to-ps2 adapter on xp. I have used this mouse happily for over several years already. Recently, I am noticing that a single click on a web link sometimes does not work. I would have to just re-do the click. Is my mouse aging and needs to be changed? Thanks.
  16. Hello? Is there a (open) tool/firmware that adds DVD function to the existing CD/RW drives? Thanks.
  17. Hi MDGx, I have carefully followed your directions, but still the same error appears when I click on the download basket. Yes, I have disabled firewall and enabled the running of the ActiveX. Being dual booting with Linux, I have tried the same under GNOME GUI using the firefox browser, but the MS site informs that I should be running IE browser. Is there a way I can try downloading the ME updates from Linux GNOME GUI? Thanks.
  18. Hi MDGx, The requested page error I got was immediately after following your step 10. Now, instead of selecting all the different update categories, when I just selected few files under the recommended category, I was able to go to step 13. But, when I browse for the download directory, I do not see any files at all even though I was asked to accept MS Agreements and sorts during the step 13. What am I missing? Thanks.
  19. Hi MDGx, Thanks for your inputs. I'll try them sometime later. -------------------------------- Well, I just did but I am getting some update error that cannot display the requested page when I click on the download basket after having selected the update files. I am doing this from XP Home in IE 6 SP2. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
  20. Hello? If I have XP and other Linux distributions in dual-/multi-booting, and need to restore XP, how can I do this? I have tried "fdisk /mbr" or something like that to fix and restore MBR but this was not successful, so I ended up just reinstalling the XP. I think, I have also tried some "restore" operation from XP install CD or something like that but didn't work. Another scenario is when I have XP, ME and other Linux distros and want to restore the MBR for XP and ME, how can I do this? Thank you.
  21. Hello? When I was using ME, I noticed some update download folder that held the critical update files temporarily until thes updates were applied. Then, immediately afterwards, those download files were removed from this folder. I do not remember the exact name of this update download folder, but is there a way to save the update downloads in that folder? Also, I would like to know where I can get these critical update files for ME as ME's end-of-support has neared to this June. I tried MS download site and was able to select up ME's critical update files, but I could not save them. Thanks.
  22. Hi nmX.Memnoch and gamehead200, Thanks for your comments. As for the "keep alive" option, I have already tried that but that does not help. Yes. I do have another computer connected to the same router wiredly, but I only use one computer at a time as this second machine is just for a back up purpose. That does not mean that the problem is no longer there when two machines are operating -- I do not know about that as I have not experimented it. Recently, I had the router replaced by the manufacturer but the problem still exists. I tried with a different branded wired router to factor out my dsl service provider, and I have no problem with this other branded wired router. So, I am puzzled whether this is a wireless router thingy. Any ideas?
  23. Hi Sppeling Nazi, On this xp machine, I do not have any wireless cards. When the connection drops, the only way to bring it back is to physically disconnect the router's power cord and reconnect. Thanks.
  24. Hi sonic, Yes. I'm using IE v 6.0 with SP2.
