  1. Hi theflash428, Well, actually, I've already tried with that approach too but failed. Thanks.
  2. Hello? Just completed reinstall of the OS on a new systemboard and updated virus files. When viewing a website, my system automatically rebooted itself. Thinking possible virus infection, scanned the whole system but found no viruses. Is my system infected? Thanks.
  3. Hello? When defragmenting a drive, I notice some big green chunks of unmovable blocks. Whereby are these unmovable blocks resulted? How can I safely delete them to increase free space? Thanks.
  4. Hi mmarable and eyeball, Thanks for your feedbacks. eyeball, Actually, I've already tried your method but couldn't successfully reinstall the same OS on the drive. So, I ended up just reformatting the drive.
  5. Hello? I just replaced my systemboard but I need to retrieve some data from a hard drive that was on an older board in this new system. How do I do that? The drive is recognized in the BIOS but can't be accessible anymore in the new systemboard. I thought about installing the same OS on another drive and make this older drive a secondary and access the data, but this had failed me. Thanks.
  6. Thanks, sofolo. I am trying your first two suggestions on cleaning up the temp and prefetch folders. As for the performance setting, I've currently chosen "let windows decide what's best for this computer." And, I'll follow up on the results. By the way, this browser loading issue has come up on a freshly XP installed computer, and I have already tried disk clean up and defragmentation. [follow up] Well, after using the computer for a while (~ a day), I'm noticing frequent slowness or loading failures again. Basically, as that happens, I just reload the page. So, I'm curious what's causing this behavior. Could this be due to some improper browser settings or poor hard drive quality? Thanks.
  7. Hi, Often times, I experience slow/interrupted browser loadings. Is there something I can check in browser settings, or is this related to my hard drive? Thanks.
  8. Hi, I am trying to make Microsoft's USB LifeCam VX-1000 work. At the initial configuration with the shipped driver, the camera was working nicely. But, upon reboot, running webcam application freezes with "application not responding" error message. I even tried with the latest driver, and the story is the same. How can I troubleshoot this better? I'm using XP. Thanks.
  9. Hi ripken204 and digeratiprime, Thanks for your feedbacks. The printer is Brother MFC 4450. I've visited a local office supply store and discussed the issue. Most likely, I'll have to replace the drum unit. But then, it's quite expensive ($189); it's almost the same price for buying a new printer. Right now, the print quality isn't that bad, so, I'll just keep using it around for a while. If anyone has any ideas on cleaning this drum unit so nicely, please let me know.
  10. Hi ripken204, Thanks for your feedback. Most likely, my printer doesn't have such a nice feature as it's much older than yours. But, I'll look into that. Just in case though, what if there isn't such a cleaning feature? What should I do?
  11. Hi, I've been noticing some streaks of noticeable lines on printouts from my laser printer recently. After inspecting the drum unit (cartridge), I've seen some toner dust line streaks on the drum. Is there a way to clean this toner dust off of the drum nicely? I've tried cleaning with some Q-Tips (cotton sticks), but the line streaks always come back. By the way, is this (cleaning the drum unit) something I can do, or should I just replace the whole cartridge unit? Thanks.
  12. Hi Snegithan, Thanks for your feedback. My OEM DVD is already a bootable one if that's what you mean. I mean, I can boot from the DVD. And, I'm trying a clean install, not an upgrade from XP. Can you tell me more about what you mean by making a bootable DVD? I read that OEM Vista install is tied to a particular motherboard, and you can't install again and again on different computers. But, this OEM is my first attempt ever on my computer. I guess I'd better check with the merchant where I ordered this OEM.
  13. Hi, I have an OEM Home Basic DVD - 32bit. When installing on a new hard drive, I get the following error message repeatedly after selecting "Custom Intallation": Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0x E0000100 Is this due to some defect in the install DVD? Thanks.
  14. Hi, I have a PCMCIA adapter that doesn't support AES encryption. Is it possible to add this capability to the card? Thanks.
  15. Hi, As for using a static IP instead of dynamic, unfortunately, the router doesn't provide any means to do so either based on a MAC or client computer. I guess I can manually put in a static IP on the computer as a work around. I've also tried connect/disconnect on the router configuration but doesn't help. It appears that only physically disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord does the trick. Meanwhile, hopefully, Linksys comes up with a new firmware release. Thanks
  16. Hi jcarle and ringfinger, Thanks for your feedbacks. Well, the router is already updated with the latest firmware and still exhibits the problem occasionally. And, once the issue occurs, ipconfig /renew/release doesn't work at all. I would appreciate if you have any other thoughts.
  17. Hello? I am using Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router for my DSL connection. At one point, I wasn't getting any IP from the router, and realized that my physical network connection to the router was down (no lights). Simply disconnecting and reconnecting the network cable worked then. This time, however, I'm not getting any IP from the router even though the connection lights are up on both the router and the network card on the computer. Here, simple disconnection and reconnection didn't wake up the dhcp function on the router; I had to disconnect the power to the router and reconnect it. Now, is this the router problem, the network card, or the ISP?
  18. Hello? I used to have multiple modems of the same brand in one system. Right now, I just have a single modem. Browsing through the hardware device manager, I notice the modem is listed as "xxx #3". Here, how can I get rid of the string "#3" at the end? Also, the modem uses COM5. How can I reassign a different COM port that is currently in use? Basically, I would like to find out which devices use which COM ports and want to switch/reassign COM ports around amongst devices. Thanks.
  19. Hi all, Thanks for your feedbacks.
  20. Hello? I have a desktop computer with a 450W power supply. Does this mean that the total power consumption used by all the components in the computer cannot go beyond 450W? Also, if I have multiple cards (modem/network) and disable some of them, does this mean I will be saving some electricity? Thanks.
  21. Hello? How do I access XP's NTFS drive from plain old DOS boot? Thanks.
  22. Hello? How do I change a folder's file system from NTFS to FAT/FAT32 and vice versa? Thanks.
  23. Hello? In Windows Repair mode and under Recovery Console, how do I reset administrator's password? Assume I have forgotten original admin password. Thanks.
  24. Hi bonestonne and ripken204, Thanks for your feedback. ripken204, your links are very informative. It sounds that BIOS manuevering is something doable, but there are risks involved as always in doing something new. So, I think I'll just wait around and see if new BIOS updates come along from IBM. Besides, I could just bypass the error message by delaying the adapter insertion until after the complete boot into the OS. Afterwards, Windows recognizes the adapter with the driver from the card's manufacturer.
